Musical journey (cont' Day 7). Growing up too early! My five year experience studying at the theater has shaped my life in more ways I could ever imagine. Looking back at these recordings now as I teach 13 year olds, I realize how our education differed. Perhaps it was due to the regime of the Soviet Russia and the pain of our ancestors in our DNA, or the lack of seeing a "bright" future, we were trained to feel pain, to learn how to suffer with dignity, with pleasure. Rather than being taught to look forward to a beautiful career as mind leaders of our generation, we looked back at the pain of creative souls of the past. And often we took those lessons and applied them into our own lives: creating drama, passionate deep love, intrigues, suffering for the "nourishment of the soul". Naive and innocent was definitely not in the description of our childhood. We were, however, very "happy". We lived fully, we felt deeply, we studied passionately. Sometimes I envy those with lighthearted childhoods, with clear forward- looking minds, with no time to allow the "feeling" to overcome the "thinking". In these two Romances by Rachmaninoff, I truly connected with that suffering. I had a hard time keeping my face serious singing the line: "i wish the elderly years to come sooner" and did get some giggles in the audience my age, but that was part of the actor's training lol.
