Musical Journey (cont'). On my 16th birthday I flew to Michigan, to attend a Interlochen Arts summer camp. It was my first time leaving home for 8 weeks and I was nervous, thrilled and curious. Interlochen had very strict restrictions about the uniforms and my mom and I had to go shopping for something called "knickers", in dark blue color!!! I will always remember the surprised faces of the salespeople at numerous stores. Later I found out that we could rent them for the summer! 8 weeks I spent submerged in the most beautiful, creative atmosphere. 14 girls shared a cabin with bunkbeds and 2 showers, mosquitos, lights out at 10pm, a trumpet call at 6 (or was it earlier?), music making all day long out in nature with lakes, birds, most beautiful woods and every day concerts that filled my soul and heart with overflowing energy of tears of happiness. I was with my tribe! I made incredible friends, I got the most inspiring piano teacher who kicked my butt and made me get addicted to long hours of practicing. I will never forget the Kresge stage with the lake as the backdrop. There was a moment in Shostakovich symphony performance, when darkness was present in the nature and in music and suddenly as the music shifted to a major key after so much intensity and rainy gloom, the clouds opened up and the setting sun filled the entire auditorium with golden light, creating magic that didn't seem worldly. We were all caught in the magic of this unity: the deep love for living, for connecting, for creating, for sharing the beauty all around us, the unity of belonging to where you are made to be, being in the moment, in the presence of God of Creation. That summer I miraculously won a concerto competition performing Saint-Saens no.2. The bird songs accompanied my entire performance and it was the first time I made music with 100 of my new best friends. By the end of the summer, I was so in love with my new life! My teacher recommended for me to audition for the Academy and so I did. Two days later I learned that I was accepted on full scholarship to study there all year round. I returned home for 2 weeks to pack my bags, to say goodbye to my mom, and to begin my new adventure as a full time artist. This Chopin performance is from my second summer at Interlochen. By then I was living, breathing, dreaming music with every pore of my body but it was inspired by the atmosphere around me, by the dedication of every person who was introduced to my life. I've made life long friends with whom I still share the deepest love you can imagine. That place was a miracle!
