So how was it that Tai chi chuan's Yang Luchan who "had no peers", had a peer in Ba Gua Quan's Dong Haichuan?”
The answer lies in the fact that they mastered different skills. The human body possesses two learning capabilities, what the ancient Chinese call vertical strength and horizontal strength. I've factored this distinction into a new field of Self-Awareness Science. Not known about today, the yin yang complementarity of these two capabilities makes them equally effective in neutralizing each other. Mirroring the different natures of cats and dogs, the vertical strength research was done by the women of Gong Baotian's ba gua quan lineage.

Very informative! My instructor used to tell me about his friendly sparring with others tai chi practitioners. That when you and your opponent have the same level of gong fu. They will likely to neutralize each other's forces and end up using different type of forces (not tai chi) to end the fight. :D

Yes, MMA is all about different styles creating different match ups.

Yang Lu Zhan learned gongfu from Chen Chang Xing who practiced da jia (大架) which focused on horizontal circle. But there wa another branch leaded by Chen You Heng and Chen You Ben who practiced xiao jia (小架) which focused on vertical circle. It will need a lot of readings, unfortunately in Chinese, to better understand Taiji.

There are so many differing accounts, even in Chinese. How can we verify which is the true? My rule of thumb is to go with what Yang Sau Chung and Chu Gin Soon told me. Otherwise, I must admit I don't have first hand information.

@@AdvancedHumanTraining There is no dispute on the fact that Yang Lu Zhan learned from Chen Chang Xing as it is also stated in Yang Chengfu's book "The Essence and Applications of Taijiquan". There is an English version translated by Louis Swaim.

@@user-fm8sb6gb3g The question is what he did lean from Chen Chang Xing. Some say Chen also learned a style from a Jiang Fa and this what he teached Yang. The family style was prohibited for outsiders. That would explain why Yang style is so diffrerent from Chen style.

Were there many other fights between Tai Chi and Bagua practitioners back then? Another one I've heard about is Yang Banhou being sent flying by a young Ma Gui

Yang Lu Chan learned gongfu from Chen Chang Xing, who is the grandfather of Chen Fake. Chen Fake and Yang Chengfu were in similar time. However, I don't think Yang Chengfu and Chen Fake had ever met. When Chen Fake went to Beijing, Yang Chengfu had already left Beijing to Nanjing and later Shanghai.

It seems that the Bagua Master Possessed otherworldly skills if even 10% of the stories i've read are true he had mastered lite body skills I believe that Bagua At that level would be far too much for Tai Chi practitioner no matter the skill

Based on my direct experience comparing the Yin Fu-->Gong Bao Tian-->Gong Bao Zhai method with the Chu Gin Soon-->Yang Sau Chung method, they are both profound yet in different ways. At the root of this difference was I feel Dong Hai Chuan's mastery of the open body practice versus Yang Lu Chan's mastery of the closed body practice. They generate different kinds of profound skills. Thanks.

These days they are used interchangeably. Zhang = Palm. Quan/Chuan = Fist.
