I whole heartily agree that the Yankees need to improve around the margins for their bullpen arms. The bullpen is 2nd in ERA which is great, but the pens K-Rate is 22nd not so great. I would recommend looking at the following. relievers: Reed Garret of the Mets, Griffin Jax of the Twins, Bryan Hudson of.the Brewers and David Robertson of the Rangers. Each pitcher represents a decent increase in K-Rate and don't feel that they will break the bank acquiring them. I Know that everyone will question David Robertson, he not a high velocity pitcher. he's old, blah, blah, blah. All I ask is you review the highlights from D-Robs last two outings versus the Dodgers. In two separate games he faced Betts, Freeman and Ohtani. He struck them all out over 2 separate outings. Now access his skill set.
I say they sign Nolan Ryan because I bet he can still throw 100 for one inning lol. J/K I love the thought of the lefty/righty combination with Tanner Scott although the rental thing kind of bothers me
Stupid complaints my fellow Yankee fans have that are easily rebutted. Holmes blows to many saves: For his Yankee career, Holmes has an 84% save rate, the best to ever do it had an 89% save rate. This season he has an 82%-83% save rate. Holmes pitches to contact, you need to be a strikeout pitcher to close. Holmes has a 22.5% k rate in his worst year as a Yankee. Mariano Rivera had a 23% k rate for his career. If you think Holmes isn't a closer because of those things, then you need to turn in your fan card. And no, I'm not comparing the two. Mo stands alone and is the greatest PITCHER, not just closer, to ever play.
All great baseball assessments on Holmes, all of which I agree with 100 percent. Certainly no need for a new closer, instead more complimentary pieces to put around him. I agree that Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer of all-time and his saves record will probably never be beaten. With regard to the Greatest Pitcher of All-Time, I think that there are some starters that would dispute that 😂😂😂 Good post brother.
The main differences is Mo had elite command. And Mo didn’t throw sinker he threw cutter which plays out differently. There’s no good comparison between Mo and Holmes
Mo averaged 4 blown saves per season over his 18 year career. Holmes already has 4 middle of June. Again, there’s no comparing the two. And yes, missing bats does matter when it’s high leverage. Any baseball guy knows that.
Good stuff. We need someone who can strikeout people. All good choices but hopefully we get are injury guys back and one of the ones you mentioned.AKA. Yankee Mike.
I would submit that the Yankees have a bullpen problem that I don't think a trade CAN fix. That problem is workload. With so few starters going deep into games, they are having to use 3 -4 relievers most every night. This means that they eventually wear down, and also, when you are trotting 4 guys out there on a regular basis, what are the odds that one of them is having a bad night and gives up some critical runs? Short of trading for a Mike Marshall or Sparky Lyle type that can give you multiple innings several times a week, I am not sure WHAT the answer is.
What about Camilo Doval? 100mph average cutter is nasty, and the Yankees destroyed his ERA, so it'd be buying low on him. We'd have him for 4 postseason runs, too, including this year. Arias + Lalane + a lower-level guy gets it done, I think.
It sucks that Everson is out because obviously he was a great trade chip.I suggest they go out and get as many lights out relief help as possible. Now is the time.Don't wait! This is the year.
I can't believe i'm about to say this but if they can get Miller for Jones and Arias then they might have to do it. We have a loaded team already that there isn't even a spot for Dominguez currently. Even if Jones is ready by next season there won't be room for him on the team. Yankees would have to be really confident that they'll re-sign Soto long-term though. Arias is a couple years away as well and Lombard is destined for 3B anyway. if the Yankees can have a Rengifo and Miller deadline then they're world series bound imo.
Tbh i don't even blame holmes for the game yesterday. Rizzo should have charged that ball. And dj should have been playing close to the line to prevent a double.
Also, Holmes threw strike three for the third out, but the ump decided he wanted to see another pitch so he called it a ball. Three things conspired to create that blown save. Gleyber cost him another and Volpe cost one too. Don't know why so many people ignore all the context and just jump on him having 4 blown saves.
@firesideyankees Ryan Garcia I’m a hard pass on Mason Miller he is too expensive and a injury waiting to happen,Ryan Helsey not too sure about him?Hunter Harvey is a big maybe for me?Tanner Scott is a pass for me,Reed Garrett is a maybe as well! I think I will go with Andrew Nardi for a trade for the Yankees bullpen! 7:25
Bruh for 1 miller contact only 740k and clay homes is 6m for same time and if we want sum 1 to throw gas he’s him every picher will get hurt other that father throws like homes
@@brandonmoore74974 blow saves this year along with a bunch of other close calls. When his stuff is working he’s good but when it’s not working he gets hit hard and as of recently his stuff hasn’t been working that good.
We NEED a solid, very capable, lights out, RELIABLE closer. Clay Holmes is NOT it! He's blown 4 saves this year alone, while Mariano blew 4 games in 19 YEARS! In the off-season of 2008 we added CC Sabathia & AJ Burnette. Now imagine we did the same thing again by acquiring Scott & Miller?
Agreed. He's just not a "dominant" type closer. He pitches to contact, which is just not great at the end of games. I'd rather have him in the 7th and 8th inning with a firebreathing monster in the 9th
Rivera actually blew 80 saves in the regular season in his career, or about 4-5 every single season he was the Yankees closer. Holmes is one of the best closers in baseball, period. Anyone they could acquire also blows saves, and makes some saves they do convert nailbiters. I guarantee you would complain about anyone who could possibly replace Holmes just as much. It’s the nature of the position.
Lets look at those blown saves. One was caused by a Gleyber error, another by Volpe and the other day a combination of Rizzo and the home plate umpire blowing the call on the third strike of the third out. But for those, Holmes has a sub 1 ERA and WHIP and 1 blown save. Context matters.
His k rate is 22.5% this year, his West as a Yankee. Mariano Riveras career rate was 23%. You were saying how pitchers who pitched to contact couldn't be closers?
