Maybe so but those pathetic Jeter wimpy HR's to right are truly embarrassing. The one against Baltimore should've been waved off. Probably more than half of Jeter's career homeruns were a foot over that absolutely pathetic beyond belief right field porch. It was truly a mistake for the Yankees to replicate those stupid dimensions in the current Yankee Stadium for a franchise who is not well known for great starting pitching. Should've built a pitcher friendly stadium like Dodgers Stadium, Angels Stadium or the Giants Stadium. Places like Yankee Stadium and the total joke, little league stadium "Fenway" ought to be banned outright. Like Brett Pussy Gardener and Tyler Sissy Wade.

I feel you. Mattingly was my favorite as well. I had posters of his on my wall and shirts with him on it and tons of Mattingly baseball cards. 95 was a tough, tough year for a fan of the Yankees and especially for a fan of Donny. What a run the Yanks had in those years you mentioned. Pure baseball just dripped off of those playoff years. I will never forget it. Cheers.

Can you be appreciative? Judge is an insane batter in clutch situations and Stanton and Gardner have been really cruical pieces for us this year. Yeah, we don't have the people we used to. True....however a few things. Baseball was different back then, the entire league had a batting average 40 points higher than today so hits were generally more likely. Also starters went deeper, bullpens werent as good so strikeouts were far less likely. And most importantly....postseason baseball is incredibly random and basically a coin flip or crapshoot bc the sample sizes are so small and theres 3 rounds.....the 96 to 2000 Yanks were great, clutch but also if Im gonna be honest, very very lucky. Fan interference, umpires in the way, 2-2 pitches right over the plate called balls, followed by grandslams, 74 bouncers up the middle, Todd Zeille's double basically rolling on top of the wall for a good 10 seconds, ONeill's catch to end Game 5 in 96.

That guy traded away all the young talent in the 80's, especially the pitching talent for feature attractions. George cared most about headlines. It was Gene Michael that changed the mindset during Steinbrenner's suspension that led to the late 90's dynasty...finally keeping guys like Jeter, Bernie, Mariano (3 guys that George wanted traded). When the Yankees did spend like drunken sailors in the 2000's, getting Giambi, Mussina and company, they had no more success than they do now. They eventually stumbled into championship in 2009. Why didn't Torre continue to win throughout the 2000's with teams that were even more talented on paper than the 90's squad, and they still had the core 4 remaining in their prime? Core 5 if you wanna count Bernie? The Yankees haven't had a losing season since 1992. Think that's easy to do? That's not caring?

Even if the Yanks would’ve won the Seattle series in 95, you guys would’ve lost to the Indians in the ALCS

If George never got suspended, the dynasty might not have happened. The Yankees ended up on the losing end of a lot of trades in the 80s for the players that caught George's eye. He was their GM back then, no matter who actually had the job. A lot of fans, including me, were cheering when he got suspended in 1990. Can you just imagine, if George never got suspended and Gene was never given control, Jeter and Mo probably would have been traded because of their early struggles. George traded Al Leiter for a declining Jesse Barfield due to early struggles. And if he wanted to get rid of Bernie, Roberto Kelly would have probably been in CF, which means no Paul O'Neill. The 90s might have looked very different. After all, the Yankees were the worst team in the AL when George got suspended.

They were just better teams. What you're not used to is other team's being able to punch the Yankees back. the 90's weren't exactly Sandlot kids. They had a bench consisting of Strawberry, Raines, Fielder, Boggs, Sierra. That was the bench.....and Tino, Posada, Jeter, Rivera, O'Neill, Bernie....these were great players, they were just better than the modern team that is still young and BUILDING towards a championship.

However, with the current team, they've been "building" for 5 years now. A lot of them aren't that young anymore (Judge in particular, who's about to turn 30 & has certainly had his fair share of injuries), &/or have regressed tremendously over the last few years (Sanchez & Gleyber, for example). Also, I think there is an issue in regards to their mentality, but it's not that they lack mental toughness. The mentality issue is that the modern team are complete slaves to the analytics (especially offensively). Relying exclusively on walks & home runs doesn't win in October. The modern team lacks speed, athleticism, contact hitting, etc., & that (along with the increased parity) bites them in the @$$ in October. Even the '09 team, for all the home runs that they hit, weren't completely reliant on it. They still had guys who could do other things (Jeter, Damon, etc.)

@@ellandecampbell6279 For starters, people need to relax off the past season and a half, it has not been traditional baseball with CovId and all. Lots of players missed time with that. 10 days here and there adds up. What people are also forgetting is they deadened the ball in 2021. That was brutal to guys like LeMahieu, Torres and co. Gleyber is not a 30+ homer guy, neither is LeMahieu, when 20 or so balls that left park years prior are now winding up in mitts, that's a nice dip in average, and a tough adjustment in approach. Analytics today are not an option, they're a necessity. It is a pitching dominant era right now. Every batter is pitched and positioned in the field to a science. The league average last year was .244, the lowest it's been since 1972 with 2020, and 2018 not far behind. A rabbit ball was used in 2019 when 50+ players hit 30+ homers in a season, average that year was at .252. Home runs are important right now. of the top 10 teams in batting average last year, only 3 of those made the playoffs, while 8 of the top 10 home run hitting teams made the playoffs, the Blue Jays (who hit the most) being one of the 2 teams who didn't and they missed by a game or 2. this is why Joey Gallo has value right now. That solo blast has become a more likely outcome than a 3 hit rally. Look at the past playoffs and world series. If you watch what I watched, you saw home runs. Most every run that crossed the plate was via the long ball. It is what it is. The Nationals hit .21 points better than the Yankees did as a team, how'd that work out for them? I don't rally for all this, I'm old school myself, it's just recognizing the scenario. These guys are all throwing in the upper 90's...it's not easy to punch and judy that type of pitching, or steal bases on that velocity.... if it was, then why wasn't it executed verse Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson? Lastly, be careful in wishing away Gary Sanchez, he's 27 yrs old, and still one of the better hitting catchers right now at 6mil a year. Perez, Grandall, Realmuto, they make close to 20mil a year...Sanchez is playing for a contract in 2022. I personally say ride his motivation to a pay day, and let him sign elsewhere. Either way, he's next year's catcher for sure.

Yes indeed, Donnie No Rings, is only second to Derek Jeter, in the all time greatest category. And by all means, make Don Mattingly, Yankees Manager, so he can under achieve once again, which he most certainly would. Tino Martinez was a far better first baseman and Yankee than Don Mattingly. Classy guy, hell yes. Winner... well, how many rings did he win? Case closed. And going to the nauseating Dodgers as Manager, says a lot about his respect for Yankees history. Young and naive people have no clue how deep the Yankees vs Dodgers rivalry was for decades. More so than the Yankees vs Roid Sox rivalry EVER was. But it was the best rivalry and most heated rivalry in all of sports, behind only the Celtics/Lakers. And Big Don, ran straight to the Dodgers, when they came a calling. That's unforgivable. And he couldn't even get them INTO the World Series, with a stacked deck, and has been a failure ever since. How predictable of poor Donnie. 🤣🤣🤣

I was a huge Yankee fan back in these days. So upset when they lost to Cleveland in 97. However, it’s interesting seeing it from their perspective now. Look up the 97 Indians season on YT. That was a monster team that really should have won a title in the 90s. ✌️

It could have been a better Yankees-Braves rematch than the beat down the Braves received in 1999. Kevin Brown just happened to be unstoppable in the playoffs in '97 and '98 and knocked off the Braves each year.

Not really he just had that one series 1996 and the 1998 World Series. He hit .213 for his career in the playoffs. Why wholers would throw him an off speed pitch when he couldn’t catch up to his fastball was wholers just over thinking.

@@alwillk Leyritz had big post season homeruns in 95 and 96 with the Yankees, he had big post season hits/homeruns for the Padres on there way to the world series in 1998, then returning to NY in 1999 had a big homerun against the braves in that world series as well. I remember Joe Buck joking that Leyritz could spend the season on vacation but just come back for the post season because of his string of clutch hits in the post season from 1995-1999. I'm not sure what his batting average was in the post season. But when Leyritz did hit it usually came at a clutch moment. Leyritz was also the left fielder who lost that fly ball in the sun resulting in Andy Hawkins no hitter loss. Have no idea other than because he was young why the Yanks stuck a catcher/first baseman in left field. But back then they had Mattingly playing LF RF 3B 2B etc which he did well. Late 80s early 90s was hard to watch sometimes

I was at both games. I literally had laryngitis for over a week. That's how much I cheered.

The oneill catch was something else. Polonia kept fouling those wetteland pitches off until he got one he could handle, and drove it to the gap. O'Neil barely got there because he shifted a couple of steps to the right moments before the pitch was thrown.

The 2001 Postseason was my favorite, despite the ending. Best way I can describe it is the Yankees won the World Series 3-4. Those three games in NY were the best, bring joy to this day. The 2001 Postseason in the Old Yankee Stadium was special. Saw Game 5 ALDS, Games 3 and 4 ALCS, just an amazing atmosphere as we all were escaping the post 9/11 anxiety. I was at Game 7 2003 ALCS. Think that’s only time Stadium could be louder; but even then, there wasn’t as much emotion as there was in ‘01. Blessed to grow up and experience those moments in person.

I was actually at game 6 of the 2003 ALCS, one day before you. (Far, far less enjoyable than game 7, lol.) But my brother and I were also at game 6 of the '96 series, which was incredible. Nevertheless, it was those 2001 games, 4 and 5, that ended up being far more special to me - even though I didn't get to be there in person, and even though they weren't able to finish it off. To this day, I still get chills whenever I watch the clips of the Tino and Brosius homeruns. I can't imagine feeling anything like that with a baseball game again.

Diamondbacks really should have won in 5. A seven game series makes it sound close when in reality the Yankees lead in just 9 of the 67 innings in the series.

@@alwillk And by that same argument, the Yankees should've won the 1960 Series against the Pirates. But they didn't, because that's not how baseball is played. No reward is given for leading at different parts of a game - only at the end of the game. (The D-backs failed to get the 27th out two different times. Counts just the same.) Likewise, no extra reward is given for winning by 13 runs or just 1. :-) Anyway, I don't think anyone was claiming that the Yankees were as good or played as well as Arizona in that series. This video and discussion is simply about our favorite Yankee *moments* - nothing more than that.

2001 should have been NYC’s year why with the 911 tragedy. Instead, the Ravens beat the Giants in the Super Bowl and the Yankees lost to the D’Backs in the World Series.
