Michael is 100% correct. I think this has come from the front office - Gleyber is gone at the end of the season, so Boone is not required to mollify him anymore. That's it.
“Joe Girardi had him first” No he didn’t, Gleyber came up in 2018 which was Boone’s first year as manager. Players like that got called out when Girardi was manager, Sanchez was a big reason Joe didn’t come back.
Thank you. Joe had Judge, and he had Sanchez who apparently is one of the big factors that ran him out of town (what foresight the front office had on the one sticking with their "star" over their manager). He never had Stanton or Torres and would never have allowed them to do this. He never had Luke Voit parading around with his fist in the air as the ball bounces off the right field wall in a playoff game.
I’ve NEVER seen a guy run hard on a ball off the wall to left field in yankee stadium and not get a double. It’s 400+ ft to left. Right field maybe! But if gleybor runs hard, he has a double every-time, don’t care how hard the ball was hit.
Great analogy Michael with the gummy worms. I 100% agree with your analysis and thoughts here. I too would make the rule if I were manager to run hard to 1st base until I see the ball clear the wall. We pay Gleyber $14.2M per year. At best, we ask a player to run hard 4 or 5 times per game. Out of the 8.1B people in the world, he is the New York Yankee starting 2nd baseman! It blows me away at times on how nonchalant he appears to be to have earned the role of a starter the past 7 years as a New York Yankee.
U know Michael…..I have 2 say…..My George I think U got something ! LOL! Yeah that 9th ending B ball change would bring so much move entertainment value 2 the game !!!!
Kay, you have a point. If Stanton could hit a breaking ball and stay healthy, this wouldn't be a conversation. If Torres were consistent, this wouldn't be a problem. Judge doesn't have protection. Simple. The reasons he doesn't have protection are on Cashman and players not performing. Wells is young. He's playing well, but teams don't respect him.
Obviously Torres was talked to behind closed doors in the past and warned not to do it again. He deserved to be benched. Yes, the entire team should be held to thst standard no matter who they are.
The tipping point was it cost a run and it’s the latest in a long list of screw ups and laziness by gleyber this year alone who leads the mlb in errors among 2nd basemen
I was glad to see Boone finally take some action on players not giving a hard 90 in running to first base, but 100% agree with Michael’s comments on singling out Gleyber at this point while not making a broader statement that it won’t be tolerated across the board. I think Donaldson was a cancer on this team and his lack of hitting was made worse by his lack of hustle. Verdugo stands out to me is another culprit this year among others. That attitude conveys laziness and poor spirit that can infect the soul of a team. A lot of these guys claim that they were big Jeter fans growing up. They should go back and watch some video of how Jeter conducted himself on the field-it’s about heart and winning. Even A-Rod, who was often maligned by Yankee fans, ran hard to first base every time. Many opportunities are missed throughout the season by not having a consistent and relentless press against other teams that will induce mistakes and make other teams pay.
I think perhaps there should be rule changes. My suggestion would be situational penalties for intentionally walking someone. Maybe instead of getting awarded first, the batter should be awarded second base in situations where a player is walked with nobody on. Or maybe limit intentional walks so we can get more strategy in the game. I'm fine with walking a guy if the situation calls for it, because that's strategy. Simply refusing to pitch to a batter just because he's really good isn't strategy, it is surrender. I'm a Yankee fan, so I'm biased here, but I thought the same thing when Bonds was getting walked all the time. And it wasn't because I was entertained by Bonds, it was because I like competition. I want to see pitchers who want to compete against the best, not guys who essentially cry uncle.
@urbangorilla33 who would you lead off with then? Boone tried just about everybody and nobody seems to fit. Because of his speed and average it makes sense to lead with Jazz.
@@unleashthefury111 Good point, they don't have a true leadoff man. I would go with Soto, Judge, Wells, Rice, Torres, Verdugo, 3rd base (whoever it is), Volpe, Grisham. (I'm benching Stanton and Soto/ Judge alternate DH/RF.
What a great fucking take Michael! Comming from a die hard Yankee fan from so cal (die hard since 76) never thought about that. Admiring long drives and everything u said about Gleyber is Sooooo true
Soto has had a fabulous year with the Yankees and is a huge asset...but did you notice Soto watching the ball on his homerun which hit the top of the fence...what would happen if it bounced back?? Boone should meet with the entire team about this...but he won't because he is not a Manager...he's just a figure head...he's your office type "pencil pusher"!!
I love how fans feel like things aren't happening because they don't have personal awareness of them happening. If a no-one has talked to the team about something, you don't know it. When do we ever really hear about team meetings, one on one meetings, etc? I imagine Boone has talked about a great many things with the team and individual players. you literally have zero clue about what has and has not been said by Boone behind the scenes. Just like we didn't hear about everything Girardi said, or Torre, or Buck, Merrill, and on, and on. Baseball teams don't publicize every single thing said at every single meeting. And they almost never publicize it if it potentially embarrasses a player.
Be real Blue Jays fans, walking anybody with nobody on and two outs in the second inning is an embarrassment. That cannot possibly make you proud to root for them.
That’s not how it works! If you’ve ever played sports, you know rivals are rivals! They always play you tough. Especially when they have nothing to lose and can play the spoiler role
He never said that. But come on man, your team is going nowhere and your manager was so scared of Judge that he walked him with 2 out and nobody on in the 2nd inning. You seriously gonna say you're good with that? You really enjoy rooting for a team afraid to compete even when the result has next to no meaning for them? Walking a guy in a big spot or to set up a double play is one thing, that's strategy. What you guys did was chicken s*it, plain and simple. And no real fan of competition thinks that should happen. Limit intentional walks so managers have to use them strategically. This isn't about wanting to see Judge in particular hit, it is about wanting to see teams unafraid to challenge the best when there is no situational reason to walk them. I wasn't a Bonds fan during his cheating era, but it ticked me off that everybody just gave up and walked him. Bottom line, if you are a blue jays fan and weren't embarrassed by that level of fear, then I guess you're rooting for the right team.
@snerdterguson actually he did say that. Not in this clip with another. "MLB needs to change this" In other words, make a rule so you can't just IW judge. I have no issue with thr walking. If the walking is an issue, he can steal 2nd base so it hurts more. Kay is acting like a walk is an automatic out for Jude, no. The consequence is that he's on first base.
@@mattrasp1615 it’s got nothing to do with that champ. MLB wanted the game to be more entertaining for the fans. I didn’t want them to ban the shift however MLB though by doing it, it would make the game more entertaining. By MLBs standard of how they want the game to be more entertaining this would be a rule to improve that. I’m sorry you were so personal offended by my comment. Praying for you and your family.
Sometimes I think Michael likes to yell and scream because he wants to sound like a WFAN shock jock. Judge gets to many IBB's ? The solution is to bat Judge 2 and Soto 3, not to change the rules of baseball. Mantle and DiMaggio didn't stand in the box and admire their home runs ? That's because of they did, they'd get beaned in the head in their next at bat. Besides, if there were baserunners they couldn't leave their bases until the ball cleared the wall, so even in the olden days it didn't make that much of a difference. As for Gleyber, he's a unique problem who has made constant baserunning mistakes and mental errors in the field. He should not be compared to Soto, Stanton and even Donaldson.
Torres leads all 2nd basemen in errors. And he just started to hit. His leash is shorter. If it were up to me, Torres would have been traded when he had value. Cabrera would have been playing second base a long time ago. Cabrera is the guy getting screwed here. No sympathy for Torres.
Intentional walks should be limited. I never liked it at the end of the day this is the entertainment business. We come to see the stars compete and play.
Have a better lineup.. this team sucks Michael lol. That’s the problem! You can keep crying all you want.. they had Austin Wells behind judge. If Soto was behind him. He won’t be walked! It’s common sense.
The problem with this take is the assumed knowledge/conclusion that nothing has been said to Torres or other players. I’m sure JD was spoken to about it, as well as Soto, Torres etc. Just because the players may not fix the habit, doesn’t mean a manager didn’t previously discuss the issue. I do agree Gleyber should’ve been benched sooner.
Chicken s*it baseball to just walk anybody just because you're scared. In some situations it is smart strategy, with two outs and nobody on when your team is gonna finish under .500 and the game means nothing, it is just plain cowardice. People afraid of competition should not be allowed to take part in sports.
Best way to stop these pos bat flips & standing @ the plate would be giving them 4 sec to get outta the back & start your sprint or its an automatic out
So you want a rule like the nba where they can’t sit the star for x games a series. I think that’s how the rule is? Idk. Don’t watch, but remember stars sitting out games was a problem. So something like you can only walk X player X times a series? 🧐 idk. Might work. Isn’t the worst rule I’ve heard about.
They took 1 star out of the game and still lost. I don't think there's a blueprint for anything here. I hate to see him intentionally walked but hey they got the W.
Negatives.........Yankee fans chanting USA, USA,USA during Canadian national anthem. Why don't any of you media guys talk about that. Americans would go wild if their anthem was disrespected.
The Curry-Knick analogy does not have parallels. How can an opposing coach prevent the best player on the opposing team to have the ball?? The only solution is to give him more protection, or move him back to 2nd and have Soto protect him.
It completely works because he wasn't actually suggesting it or saying it is a current thing. What he was saying is, intentionally walking a batter would be, as if (as, so it is a simile) a coach were able to jut say "Curry can't get the ball" That's a near perfect simile, because that is what happens when players are intentionally walked. The opposing coach is saying they aren't allowed to hit. The only reason it isn't perfect is because there is no penalty mentioned in the basketball part. For example, Curry is not allowed to touch the ball, but the offense inbounds from the sideline at half court rather than on the baseline in the backcourt.
What old days are you talking about? I can't recall a time when it would be standard to hit a guy because he's good at baseball. Of course every era had guys that would throw at a guy because they were mad about giving up a homer. But it wasn't common. Aaron, Mays, Ruth, Williams, Bonds, Griffey, Pujols, etc... They weren't constantly getting hit by a pitch because they hit a home run.
oh ffs, in 2004, barry bonds was intentionally walked 120 times. somehow, the earth stayed on its axis and we moved on. 😂 tom tango later did an analysis on this subject , and if memory serves, it was analytically incorrect to intentionally walk him more often than not. be happy with the free base. 😛
If anything happens to the Yankees Kay wants the rule changed immediately 😂 look at what he said about Wrigley field last judge got injured & all of sudden Kay was saying it’s the worst field in baseball 😂😂
And your take on Torres was GOOD but there WAS A PROBLEM !! The problem was that you NEVER CAME OUT AND DIRECTLY BLAMED BOONE FOR IT - YOU ONLY INTIMATED IT ! You WERE AFRAID to directly BLAME YOUR BUDDY so that was VERY DISAPPOINTING !!
You understand he's a commentator and has no actual power to change rules, right? He is using the only "power" he has which is to publicize what he believes is a problem. I don't agree with the ninth inning thing, but I think rule changes should be looked at to limit the number of intentional walks a team is allowed per game. Then it can be forced back into being a strategy, as opposed to a team just giving up. Judge is batting like .320, so it isn't as if pitching to him is automatically a hit. It is particularly off putting when it is a team that is completely out of it who is walking a guy with two outs and nobody on in the second inning.
@@snerdterguson I can agree with that point but if that’s the issue put people in place to make teams that walk him suffer for it. If players hit consistently behind him trust me no one is walking him. But saying there’s camp kids that came to see him hit is a poor argument of trying to get sympathy from people. Simply put it you don’t want him walked spend money get the players that are there to do better after him and things will be different. I can recall bonds being walked a lot but Kent was there to make other teams pay the price.
The manager of a team that will finish under .500 intentionally walking a guy with nobody on and two outs in the second inning is f*cking with the game. I watch sports because I like seeing athletic competition. That was the opposite.
