My father was a member of the army of occupation after having fought in two battles (Phillipines, then Okinawa). He said being in Japan helped him change his mind about the humanity of the Japanese, so it really was a good thing in the long run. There were many at that time (end of WW2) in America who were literally counseling genocide after the horrors the Japanese had inflicted on the rest of Asia and the Allied/American Armed Forces.

@@ac4185not only did they assume that, they were outright told that’s what would happen. Many high ranking military leaders of Japan told the public that Americans would rape, pillage and plunder once they got in. Many Japanese citizens around this time attest to that, and also display their revelation that it was wrong when Americans well… didn’t do that. Americans by and large came in, helped rebuild, and were kind to the Japanese during the rebuilding which flew directly in the face of the propaganda their military was putting out. Hence why a bond was formed so quickly that lasts to this day

My father would confirm if he was still alive. His destroyer sailed into the lagoon at Truk Island 3 days before the final surrender to pick up the Japanese negotiating. They held preliminary negotiations for the final surrender until the USS Missouri arrived. I have his pic of the Japanese climbing up the steps to his destroyer. He saw the horrors of war including the times they went ashore after some of the major battles. He made his peace with God, standing on deck directing the turret guns at the Kamakazes. He was proud and patriotic but instilled in us a humble reverence for their sacrifices from loss of life to loss of limb and/or mind to the ultimate sacrifice their lives. They didn't have the technology of today and it was truly a battle of the minds! Fortunately overall any mistakes didn't lead to defeat. My Dad said years ago we'd never see a war like that again. And our heroes of WWII were mostly young men. My father was only 20 when he entered the war at Guadalcanal! He instilled in us too the price of freedom doesn't come free and to embrace our freedoms and rights every day and never forget who fought and died for us!

We are so fortunate the japanese are so honorable. If they resisted and launched a resistance it would have been a 1940s version or iraq/Afghanistan. And they got to see we wernt there to destroy the country we just wanted to demilitarize them, they did attack first.
