Yanmar 2GM Engine Rebuild: Removing PISTON and RINGS from engine (Part 5)

If you are doing a full Yanmar 2GM engine rebuild this video is for you. We explain how to remove pistons from the cylinder head. That's when we finally got a better look at that cracked piston, a full chunk of metal was entirely gone. No wonder our little diesel engine wasn't running anymore. Our second piston is still good but unfortunately the piston rings we're fully seized up. After some struggles and trying out a few different tricks we finally manage to get them off. Fortunately we had ordered new rings for that one. Don't miss next video when we explain how to install the pistons without the fancy piston compressor tool. We also measure the bearing clearance.
If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up!

It's good to see budget cruisers take the time to do things right. You are well on your way to becoming a diesel mechanic. You certainly have the aptitude for it.

Thanks Kevin. We really couldn't afford having someone fix it for us. With all the problems with ran into I think our bill would have been close to just getting a new engine. Plus we learnt tons.

@@WildlyIntrepid Never so deep in the Yanmar, but I did do a handful of videos on the 3GMFC engine, most recently a swap of the fresh water pump. As you said in the video, the water pump mount is also the alternator bracket, which makes a pump exchange more complex than one would expect.

Awesome! It's great to have as much content on these things imo as it helps everyone learn and feel more confident in fixing problems. We will have to check it out when we get better service.

Wow first 1 watching this video. You need to be almost like surgeons to do this kind of work so process and slowly too. Good job guys. Actually learned something today my first car had 3 cracked pistons apparently only driving with 1 so I could find a place to fix with hilly terrain in middle of nowhere close to Manitoba for 5 days on my way to Calgary with full car moving. Now I know how they did it❤ Wow❤ Looking forward to Thursday video too alittle spoiled this week😍⛵❤💓💓💓

Congrats on being first. Wow it must have been interesting driving on only one piston. I learnt so much doing this myself. And Cory did an amazing job.

@@WildlyIntrepid it wasn't pretty trying to go up hill trying to find a service garage for many miles going slow because only way so took forever. I believe the little town was called Wawa 1 service station 1 place to eat 1 place to sleep a bar and a Sears outlet you could order from. 5 days there ordering parts and putting in. Apparently the guy who checked my car. In Ottawa decided to shave some of the piston down and didn't clean the shaving in piston shaft. It was known because engine was aluminum engine and was covered under warranty whole new engine. It was a little Astre.I could have travelled to Calgary and back in 5 days. Lucky only had to pay motel bill not engine. Your Aunt Sylvia was with me at time❤

Quite the adventure. Glad you made it though and only had to pay for the motel. Maybe you never would have explored or seen Wawa otherwise.

You are better off getting another new piston rather than reusing the one with the seized rings. The surfaces inside the ring grooves seal against the rings to prevent blow by. The ring grooves will be scratched from removing the seized rings and are unlikely to give good compression when you are done with the rebuild.
@WildlyIntrepid
@WildlyIntrepid 2 года назад
Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately we are done the rebuild so that piston will need to wait for the next rebuild. From what I can tell we have increased compression by a lot on both Pistons based on hand cranking. We never did a compression test so I can't say for sure. But it runs with none of the blowby we had before. Cheers

Can I ask a weird question? Is it good to have commercials on your channel. Probably a stupid question, I know. But I was wondering if it's a good thing.
@WildlyIntrepid
@WildlyIntrepid 3 года назад
No it's a fair question. It alows us to make some money. Every little bit helps such as our patrons and donations. Editing and filming takes a lot of time and if we weren't making any money from it unfortunately it'd be hard to keep the channel going. We'd have to go back to Canada and work regular jobs.
