Yaquina Head is on the Pacific Ocean just north of Newport in northern Oregon. It is the site of the largest lighthouse in Oregon. The land was formed by a lava flow which originated over 300 miles away in eastern Washington State.

"The Columbia River Basalt Group flows exhibit essentially uniform chemical properties through the bulk of individual flows, suggesting rapid placement. The 310 mile long Ginkgo flow of the Frenchman Springs Member appears to have been formed in roughly a week. The Ginkgo basalt appears to have originated from a large lava feeder dike near Kahlotus, Washington in eastern Washington State. It is named for petrified Ginkgo tree rocks which are found throughout the area.
The flow’s original magma erupted some 16 million years ago and ended here at Yaquina Head on the Oregon Coast.
