Located at the western end of the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, is the town of Yarmouth.
The first recorded mention of Yarmouth dates back to 991 AD, pertaining to King Æthelred the Unready's record of the Danegeld tax. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it appears as 'Eremud', a name which roughly translates to 'muddy estuary'. At around this time there is believed to have been a harbour situated at the neighbouring village of Thorley up until its surrounding waters began to silt up. Subsequently, Yarmouth took on the role as a harbour, being situated at the mouth of the river Yar; also referred to as the Western Yar so as to distinguish it from another river named Yar on the island.
In 1135 Yarmouth received its first charter. In 1547 Yarmouth Castle was completed. Its construction was ordered by way of response to earlier raids the town had suffered at the hands of the French. In 1670 the castle became the residence of the Governor of the Isle of Wight, Sir Robert Holmes. Today it is a tourist attraction run by English Heritage. Another notable historic building in the town is the Church of St James (seen in detail just after the 5-and-a-half minute mark). This was built between 1614 and 1626 on the site of an earlier church destroyed by the French.
In 1830 the first regular ferry service between Yarmouth and Lymington on the mainland began operation, which originally took the form of a steamship. Frequent ferries operate between the two towns to this day. A railway station once served passengers in the town between 1889 and 1953. Today, public transport to the rest of the island is available by way of buses which run between Yarmouth and nearby settlements, including the town of Newport.
In 1876 Yarmouth Pier opened. It initially served as a landing stage for steamships. This Grade II listed structure features at the end of the walk.
