I just got my Stanwood, and I absolutely love it. You can change the tightness of the wind by adjusting your speed. Slower = looser. I have two small ball winders that I’ve never been happy with for many different reasons. I will only be using the Stanwood going forward. It is so far superior to anything else I have ever used. Thanks so much for the video!

Oh gosh, I've got both of those, too! I got the Stanwood just over 1 1/2 years ago, but managed to knock the metal disc off the top of the C-clamp screw last weekend. I ordered the Knit Picks as an emergency backup, but managed to get the disc back onto the clamp screw of the Stanwood anyway (by holding it in place as I slid the winder into place, then screwed it onto the table snugly -- I think the sustained pressure did the trick). Stanwood says they're developing a new-style clamp which will work with their existing Large Metal Yarn Ball Winders, and they'll send me one of the new clamps once they have them ready (even though my winder is out of warranty, so they can't just replace the entire thing). I've tried both winders, and they both work fine for up to 100g of yarn. I was going to sell one of the winders -- but I'm tempted to keep them both!

Great minds think alike!! To be honest, I only use the Stanwood... and keep it set up all the time! (hazard of growing your passion into a full blown yarn emporium! ha ha ha! So stressful that the clamp disk fell off! And how nice of Stanwood to offer a replacement. Such a classy company!! Christa. xx!!

My wife brought the Stanwood large ball winder.And she got it from there site, and it was cheaper then another site. And she just loves this winder. And this is her first ball winder she ever had. She can make a same cake of yarn. She did a 3 oz cotton Lily Sugar' n Cream. She also did 7 oz, 364 yds of Red Heart Super Saver. And did a great job on both of them. There is very little noise.

About a month ago I got an IDENTICAL one to the Stanwood (not one part is different) off Amazon, but under a different name, Prime (free shipping) and only $48! So happy I got it! Great info! I have the Knit Picks winder and have wanted the Stanwood and I have the money to buy it, I'm just too lazy to order it! LOL! Anyway, my Knit Picks winder was acting up and my cakes would fly off mid-wind. I noticed the screws had come loose, so I tightened them and it's not wonky anymore. Still, I don't like how loose it winds things and will be buying the Stanwood. I have had the Knit Picks for about 12 years, so for the money (I think I paid $20) it was great! I was going to give it away, but I think I will keep it for small cakes.

Interesting! Thanks for the comparisons Christa. 💙 I'll have to look at the individual reviews you've given about them. I don't have a yarn winder & not sure why I'd need one or what the benefit of it is?! I've seen that kitchen beaters & a cardboard centre from paper towels do the trick, so if I get desperate I guess I'll try that.

Hello! I have the same small winder, as you! I have found, that if l gently hold the with one hand, as l wind the yarn is wound more compact, which l like! I purchased a large one like you, seen l have many larger ounce skeins, than 4,5 or 6 oz. I need to send it back to Amazon, as it is defective and won't crank thoroughly! Needless to say, I am quite disappointed! Great video! Love seeing all your yarn! It is heaven not dealing with knots and tangles! I do save labels/package them with the cakes! I am shocked, as to the poor processing of yarns today (tangles/knots) compared to yarns years ago watching my mother crochet and knit from 4 or 5 years of age! Poor quality control in manufacturing! Or should l say,, lack of quality control!! Blessings and Happy Crocheting/Knitting! 😊 Jan Fultz (Leesburg, Florida)

My knitpicks winder also came with a hand held post that I use to rewind cakes when I have used from the center pull and have finished my project. I don't have to set it up on the table, and it is quicker than winding those remnants into a ball! I have both winders (got the knit picks first but needed a larger one) and like both.

My stanwood is also set up so I tend to use it more if I am doing some "serious winding". I also have one of those dowel type winders that lives in my knitting bag so I can wind cakes when I'm "on the run"; (I haven't figured a way to stash my knit picks in my bag without looking like I've totally lost my mind!). I guess you can tell I like cakes better than skeins or balls of yarn!

Most of the yarn stores in New York City use the Stanwood. I went to Annie and Company on upper east side, the used the 10oz Stanwood. So it does do small amounts of yarn balls. Bob Vila did a review of ball winders, and recommended the 10oz Stanwood on his site. So excited I have the 10oz Stanwood ball winder and large swift set coming next week.

I see the Stanhope uses a circling wire which would impart a single twist or untwist with every revolution whereas the smaller plastic winder reels without going around the end and does not impart a twist. I'm looking for something to reel in some braided nylon mason line we use for athletic field line marking and a design similar to the Stanhope would be a diaster as we let it spool off tangentially rather than off an end. I learned to wind string on a stick from masons and they wrap over one end and under the other to add and remove a single twist with every wind. Maybe see some info about putting line on a spinning fishing reel where the line comes off the end of a spool vs a baitcasting reel where it comes off tangentially. With yarn, as the cake gets larger, there are fewer twists per a given length so you get an inconsistent twist. That can't be good.
@SecretYarnery
@SecretYarnery 4 года назад
Hi, Juergen Welz!! Clever! I have never had a problem, but I use the cakes as center pull. No idea if that helps. ha ha ha!! xx
@juergenwelz2591
@juergenwelz2591 4 года назад
@@SecretYarnery Yes. Pulling it straight out the top center would undo the Stanhope twist, provided the cake was the correct way up. Oriented the wrong way, it would double the twist or de-twist imparted by the winder. The other winder would gain a single twist with or against the yarn twist when pulled from the center. Not being familiar with the practical aspects of yarn, I'm not aware of the impact of more or less twist with yarn but as there is little written on the subject, it seems to matter little. With garden hoses and electrical cords the problems introduced with twist are obvious. For my intended application, I will partially unwind and rewind my braided line repeatedly. Spooling off radially from the outside and winding back up around an end would add cumulative twist that rolls the string up into a tangle the instant tension lets off and would be disasterous so a winder based on that design would not suit my purposes. A design similar to the Boye electric powered winder or one of the center handhold hand cranked kite reels would serve. I customarily wind and unwind much of the length of six 500 foot lines several times a day when marking fields and it's a tedious affair hence the multi-disciplinary quest. For $185 US plus the cost of a battery powered drill you can get one of these: www.trumarkathletics.com/products.aspx?itemid=2415&prodid=11089&pagetitle=Heavy+Duty+String+Winder Or for $235: pioneerathletics.com/ez-stringer Neither of which distribute the string evenly or neatly on the spool. Plus I want to roll 6 reels which would be prohibitively expensive; hence I'm looking at various yarn winders.

I had a Royal yarn winder that lasted for almost 25 years before the gears began to skip. I used to work in a LYS. I have wound a LOT of yarn, lol. I love being able to buy yarn in hanks and winding it myself at home. On the go I sometimes wind with a nøstepinne, a Norwegian ball winding stick. I’ve even wound yarn into balls around a rolled up piece of junk mail cardstock. I replaced the worn-out Royal winder with a Stanwood winder, primarily because, unlike the least expensive mostly plastic winders, very little of the Stanwood winder is plastic and replaceable parts are available if anything wears out. Tightly wound yarn can stretch out, especially if stored in a cake form for a long length of time. I often wind yarn cakes twice to loosen the tension on the yarn, especially with stretchy wool or if I know I won’t knit up the yarn quickly. I usually do not wind yarn for storage; I wind it when I am ready to use it.

It rotates in the opposite direction as you turn the handle - from what I can tell it it winds the wool a bazillion times faster than just you turning the handle. I've had my knitpicks ball winder for around a year now, a few days ago, was winding a cake & the yarn got caught under the gear cover so i had to open it up to get the yarn free. I found out the large winding gear inside is missing several of the gear teeth & that's why it's been making a clicking noises every so often. I had also been wondering why the yarn slipping had gotten worse with use lately. Now that you've had time to own it for a while, what do you think of your Stanwood? I'm thinking of getting one to replace my broken Knitpicks one.

Hi, @alikat1991!! Stanwood all the way! The only thing that slows it down is your arm! lol DEFINETELY worth it!! Thank you! 🌻🌺🌼

I have both of those. One huge difference is that if you are winding slick yarn, the KnitPicks winder will let the yarn slip to the bottom and not wind it correctly. The Stanwood will not do that.

So glad I watched this video. I was already considering buying a Stanwood winder. After reading all the comments I am now convinced that spending the extra $$ will be worth it. Buying something and then having it not work the way I expect it to makes my head explode. I'm just not sure if I should spend the money if I'm buying skeins and not hanks and I'd like your opinion. (btw, you are adorable explaining the speed of the winders. What was that noise you made, again? XD )

Christa, thank you for this video of comparing yarn winders. I just recently purchased a "Wool Winder", it was only 17.98, I am on a fixed income so price is a big thing for me. I like the winder and I will be purchasing a larger one later. I have one problem with mine. While winding the yarn, it keeps jumping and the yarn gets wound around the bottom of the cone. Not under with the gears, just at the bottom of the cone. If anyone has any suggestions of what to do or why it is doing this, would appreciate any assistance. I ended up with a half-wound cake with a lot of loose yarn around the cone at the bottom. Thank you in advance for any assistance. It might be the winder, and something wrong with it.

Hi, Phyllis Boyse!! Try holding the yarn in your hand... you can kind of control were it goes a bit better. I hope other people have suggestions too! Happy winding! Thank you! 🌻🌺🌼

You don't want the ball wand tighter because it is stretching the yarn. tension is very important.
@SecretYarnery

Yes, of course! But once the cake is pulled off the cone, it has a good inch to fill in. And we used plain ol' acrylic for the demonstration video - so no risk of damaging any fibers there. ha ha ha ;) Christa. xx!

Even if it isn't in the budget it is worth it. It cost me the price of TWO winders to get it mailed to Australia, and I'm struggling on a pension, but at least I believe that this will last me for ever (if I don't live too long. lol) and I can wind any size yarn on it - including very large amounts as well as small leftover cakes, so I consider it an investment.

I bought a small winder - not Knit Picks - for around $20 - but the guide doesn't stay erect and the gears are exposed so as the guide moves the yarn get caught in the gears. What a time-wasting mess! If I buy the large Stanwood will I be able to wind just an oz or so of yarn if I have a small amount left over from a project, or can I only make large cakes? I want the versatility of being able to make both small and large cakes on the one winder as I can't afford two units.
@SecretYarnery
@SecretYarnery 7 лет назад
Both winders make the same amount of yarn into small cakes - so definitely go for the stanwood. The cones are the same diameter, so don't worry about not being able to make small cakes with the Stanwood like I was. It works even better than the small ones. :) Christa. xx!

Thank you for your advice Christa. I bought the large Stanwood and am thrilled. As I'm knitting for the homeless a store donated a large bag of scrap yarn - it took me 8 hours to untangle, then out came the Stanwood. Wonderful! I'm just annoyed that I wasted the first $20 on a piece of junk. Bless you for taking the time to respond to my dilemma. BoH xxx

Color for me doesn't matter at all. What I want in any machine is that it works the way it's supposed to work every time! I have a Stanwood yarn winder (white and blue), but it looks like the Knit Picks one, smaller and plastic. It works OK, but you can't put it under much stress at all because the gears inside are plastic and they WILL skip and even strip if there is too much tension on the yarn, and it doesn't take much tension at all for the gears to start skipping. This is very annoying when you have a lot of yarn to organize into cakes and just want to get the job done. You have to go s-l-o-w and make sure the yarn slides freely with next to no tension on it. How the inside of the Knit Picks is constructed, I don't know. I don't know how tough it's built. I would like one with interchangeable cones for different amounts of yarn to roll up. The much bigger Stanwood that is in the video is great for much larger amounts of yarn and it's very sturdy. I would not have the worry about the yarn getting into the gears. If you have enough tension on the yarn, it should not backlash and end up wrapping below the bottom of the cone.

SpiritBear12, My Knit Picks winder broke the first day I bought it. I made multiple attempts to contact Knit Picks customer support & they never responded! I was winding 2.5 oz cakes of Lily “Sugar ‘n Cream” cotton. It died 1/2 way through cake #4. I ended up spinning the cone by pressing my pointer finger on the top of the cone where the yarn attaches, and turning it manually. So I bought the Stanwood Needlecraft from Amazon & it got got here yesterday. I’ve wound 30 cakes now, of all different weights and oz, without a single problem. I decided I could finally crack open my cheap little Knit Picks winder & see EXACTLY how many of those little plastic teeth were broken off the gears. It was easy to count, since they were all resting in a little pile under the gears. MORE THAN 1/2 WERE COMPLETELY SNAPPED OFF! The cost of the winder is definitely based on the quality of the material used by the manufacturer.

This is going to sound very naive to most of you but what is the real purpose of winding yarn on a ball winder.
@jo-anne8111
@jo-anne8111 5 лет назад
It's mainly for skeins that haven't been wound as it would be difficult to knit from the skein as there would be no added tension as no ball to work with just loose yarn also it would get tangled easy. However if your doing intersia projects you could wind several small balls up out of a bigger one so there easier to handle. Hope that helps a bit ☺ other people can probably tell you better.
