Could you please make a video showing how the winder works when you are using tension and if you can actually make a 10 ounce ball? These winders are approximately $165 in Canada. I don't know if I can justify that price to pay. Thank you.

Hi thank you for the demo. I have another question please. I have always purchased crochet needles the size recommended on the package for the yarn I was buying. I have never concerned myself with the size of the yarn. Just how it would look as a blanket for an infant or a hat on a knitting loom. I haven't actually done any knitting. Would you tell me what is meant when the videos for the sentro or other knitting machines say to use a size 3 or 4. where do I find that info on a skein of yarn. How do I tell what size a yarn is if I no longer have the packaging it came in? Thank you in advance

It's always good to hear from you Denise. Size 3 or 4 refers to the weight of the yarn. The weight is on the sleeve, sometimes near the hook size info. Generally, the thicker the yarn the higher the number. For example, a size 2 yarn is lightweight and thin and may be used to make socks. I usually use size 4 yarn which is a good weight for hats and scarves. You might use a bulky weight size 5 yarn for a blanket or a chunky hat. My guess is once you have worked with different weight yarns then you can guestimate about ones that you encounter with no label. You may find CraftYarnCounsel.com a helpful source for these types of questions.

Why is winding it from a skein important? I have been knitting all my life and just knit straight from the skein. Am I missing something ?

Great question! It isn't a necessity. I also crocheted for 40 years and never saw the need for one. It also isn't necessary for machine knitting. But winding the yarn ensures the tangles are gone which is very helpful especially if you use an adapter on the knitting machine. Also, if you're cranking the knitting machine by hand then you don't have to keep stopping to pull yarn from the skein if it has been wound with a yarn winder.

Ahh thanks, now I can see the reason. Not having to stop and pull out more yarn would be great. I may get one. Also, one more thing. Thank you for pronouncing skein correctly . It drives me crazy when people say "skeen". Just a quirk of mine.

If you're using a flatbed knitting machine (Silver Reed, Brother, Passap, etc.), you need a ball winder because large amounts of yarn move very quickly through your machine and tangles will jam your carriage. When I hand knit, I knit from a skein. If you buy yarn in hanks (for hand knitting), a winder is useful.

An added plus to using a yarn winder is you'll be able to preview the yarn for knots and defects. This is especially important if you're working with a variegated or ombre yarn as it will disrupt the color pattern within your project.🤗

Does this yarn winder make an excess amount of noise when being used?

@melissa stewart Hmm, not to me. It does make noise but my daughter was using it nearby while I watched tv and it was fine. I only turned the tv up a couple of notches.
