Fiberific! Ep# 52 Standards! You got none, Yarn!
This episode is about yarn standards and how to navigate them, as they are not at all "standard" in an internationally accepted manner. I talk comparisons between the different standards that I use the most. We need to understand the importance of the different terminology, of weight, ply and even worsted. That people from different crafting backgrounds can understandably be confused, by the use of the same words meaning different concepts in the same art form.. 4 ply does not only mean 4 plies, but also determines a diameter of yarn. The english language users are at it again! And wouldn't it be nice if we could have one international yarn standard? #yarnstandards #yarnweight #ply #worstedweight #worsted

What do you think about these yarn 'standards'? Do you think that its a little tricky to navigate?

You even got the birds talking! Great vid- I have been caught out a few times so now I take the time to research my yarns and pattern requirements before I start. Live vids are great !

Thanks Chantelle, great topic. i'm always trying to remember the differences. I think the ravelry sheet is helpful. I probably knew it was there at some point but may need to go find it again.

Chantelle, wow that is a great topic of Yarn Standards. You have said it well. Allthough some of the overseas yarns can be very confusing. But as a spinner myself, I can structure my yarn suitable to a project. thank you for your time to do these vidios.

Yaaasssss so much Yaassssss!!!!! When I was learning to crochet, I was absolutely stumped by the whole yarn weight thing time and time again! It wasn't until the last few years that i have finally wrapped my head around it! Another method I use of figuring our what is what is by comparing WPI, what do you think about this Chante? Do you do this too? As for live, I'm free whenevahhhhhhh! Down for whatever girl!

Yes I agree,it would be much easier to have a worldwide terminology for all the different types of yarns out there. But at least we have RU-vid and other helpful internet resources out there to help us if we need it nowadays. For which,I for one ,am very grateful. It has made my Knitting experience a lot more enjoyable, knowing if I get stuck I can do a search online and find the information I need...

Great video in pointing out the diverse - might one say confusing - terminology associated with yarn. The internet was my saving grace when I took up knitting again a couple of years ago - so much more than Patons 8ply these days (: with so many wonderful free patterns from such generous crafters, and so many delicious yarns from so many talented spinners, weavers and dyers. About one standard - I tend to agree with MyMissiMini as I think metric is the best way to go. I tend to use Ravelry quite a bit to identify the yarn weight and preferred needle size of a pattern and adapt from there.

Ravelry has some very powerful tools to help us in yarn hunting conversion and substitution! I love Ravelry, can you tell?

Yes! After managing to work out that a double crochet isn't a double crochet, then you have to work out which 4ply the pattern refers to! I have no problem with it now, but i find it more than slightly bizarre that there are still designers out there who live in bubbles and will just state "4ply" for the yarn requirement, without specifying which 4ply they used by brand so you can work out what an equivalent would be.

Oh, and so long as the live chats aren't Monday mornings, I'm happy, but I'd prefer weekdays during school hours so I'm not otherwise distracted.

Oh how I agree about confusing weights of yarn I buy USA I buy from England and Turkey and I buy from spinners too. I want to make what ever yarn that is good for crocheting, knitting and I also use looms too that will make my project look right. Now I been getting into sock yarn which I want to make certain shawls so they flow and drape properly. I know they make different sizes in crochet thread too now there are more laces being made even in shawls too. I find what may crochet up or knit doesn't work on looms having to use two more strands to make a hat right thickness to keep warm. It would be nice to have some sort of standard yarn chart.

Oh thats right! I completely forgot about the cotton sizing and also the NM sizing that weavers use!! So many options!!! And you are right, not all yarns are suited to all purposes!

Yes a standard! As a beginner knitter who has spun for many years the language/descriptors are sooooooo confusing in patterns!

Drives me crazy. Especially when using an pattern from the US and the yarn specified is not something readily available here.
