We can end the discussion with this.... In hip hop it is a tenant that you must write your own shit In hip hop its not ok to be a biter a swagger jacker a leach or a culture vulture In hip hop you dont get ethered and have a press conferece saying how cold your diss track would have been In hip hop your freestyle should be at least memorized if not actually spontaneous you dont jump in the cypher reading off your phone And in hip hop you respect the elders pay homage show love and carry on tradition... Drake has violated all of these and as a pop artist that is perfectly fine You dont get to go out your way to go against the grain then cry when your not pary of the group chat

I really enjoyed this topic, and listening to the reasoning behind Yasiin's comments about Drakes music. Growing up in the 70's, I remember that feeling of emacipation of blackness, the pride, the afro, the attire, and realizing, in time, that we still fighting the same battles in 2024! Hip Hop is a culture that knows what day to day life is like for our people, and it educates those who don't get it. It's a way to speak out about what we have to deal with in a society that dehumanizes us. I love Drakes music, and other rappers music as well, but the culture of Hip Hop today, is much more commercialized, which is what Yasiin is saying. No one can deny this, nor should they feel offended by the simple truth.

I think it's unfair to judge Drake in that way just because he has some big pop hits in his catalog. He's given great bars, great stories and hard beats in a number of songs as well. It's like over judging Jay Z for "Can I Get A.." or "Holy Grail" or worse yet, "Sunshine." No one before (in hip-hop) has lasted as long at the highest level, so no one (in hip-hop) had to crank out soooo much catalog for so many consecutive years. ANY artist who's done as much has some artistically sophisticated songs and some genre bending works in that long stash like Jay Z, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones (who had a straight disco song at some point), Prince, MJ (especially if you count his Motown J5 days).
@the-lil-x

I like the mature outlook on hip hop you have and how you still have a love for it but still recognize the darkness in that industry but still doing your own thing . I struggle with my age doing this music stuff (28) and you’ve been an inspiration just based off of the clips of the music you play. The strategy is awesome as well in here because you talk about day to day hip hop topics while still promoting your music and you don’t do it to shove it down peoples throats , you do it to genuinely share your music with the world and make business off of it. This is the new American dream .

Heres the thing, Drake, over the last few months, said and did some things that are fairly suspect. The "set the slaves free" diss. Come to find out, first thing dot wanted to tease out of drake, is cultural ignorance and insensitivity. So, scratch that one off the list. Thanks drake! The AI Pac and snoop verses. Saying names, he shouldn't be saying, in the song. Day after slaves diss, my guy shows in my news feed rocking the FUBU.

He's a pop star that tapped into the market by being a pop star turned rapper turned singer.

Actually, Yasin Bay a.k.a. most deaf was a stage actor and musician before he started rapping ! I think a lot of people don’t get is there are artist that are for the culture and they love hip-hop so they want to protect it in a sense that we are just capitalizing without substance, like we did everything else which will eventually be downfall

Drake is a rapper because he raps, but to say he's hip hop alludes that he lives and breathes the culture. He doesn't and that's not a diss, it's a fact.

Every time Drake responds in the way that he does and who it is he is responding to, it always makes me look at him as a bxtch no matter how much I like him. Drake isn’t god, and everybody doesn’t have to like him or think he’s this trendsetting artist the way that he does. He is so self inflated and that’s the part that will always make him unattractive to me (not looks wise) no matter how much music or crossover success he has 🤷🏽‍♀️
