This was an adventure to remember. While out scouting a new area I discovered a site that yielded five really cool Civil War artillery shells in afternoon. I will definitely return to this fantastic and relic rich site to metal detect and even SCUBA dive in the near future. Stayed tuned!

That's a sail weight used to raise and lower sails on sail boats along with half a dozen other uses and in the 1990's at my store I sold em as RIVER ANCHORS. (At the end of your video you asked what's this?) A sail weight combination sailor item congradulations I sold em around here for 35 bucks a piece.. That one looks authentic though not the chinese crappers I sold in the store..

The maul with the cutting edge is the head of a splitting maul. They are used to split firewood that is too tough for an axe.
@zettle2345
@zettle2345 7 лет назад
The weight of it, makes it perfect for splitting big logs and stumps. The hammer head end is so you can drive it thru, if it gets stuck lol used one for years, did all my splitting in the winter, so I could work up some warmth. keep these great videos coming, Chig. and thanks for all your hard work in making them
@MrKmoconne
@MrKmoconne 7 лет назад
I used a 12 pound version of one of those when I was a 14 year old kid. My neighbor, who was a "hoss" had a 22 pound "monster maul" that he used to destroy logs that would not split with the lighter (16lbs) version maul. Beau could probably put a new handle on that one he found and keep using it.

Those shells do not appear to have been fired. I wonder how they got in the river there. I often heard stories from my friends about people using old civil war ordnance as Ballast for House Boats and small skiffs. During storms they often either tried to escape up those little inlets or storm blew em in little channels where boats sometimes sank and or got stuck after the storms sometimes left as quick as they came.... I would love to hear theories about how that stuff got there. Interesting the reason I watch your videos. Some of em are just dern fascinating..

In Canada, I don't think you are technically permitted to have WW1 or WW2 shells and artillery related artifacts, in your home. We called the military for help identifying ours. They sent a disposal team and explained the artifacts were legally the property of the Canadian Military. Hmm! I don't have enough knowledge about the artillery to feel comfortable touching any of it. You found some great stuff!!!

That heavy Ax like thing with the blade is a log splitter, not meant to be swung. You put the blade in the center of the log then hit the blunt end with a hammer of some kind.

The tool with the sledge on one end and the blade on the other looks very much like a long log splitter that my grandfather had. The blade started the split which then had a wedge inserted. Then he would move down the log and start another split on the same side, inserting another wedge, and so on. Then the sledge side of the tool was used to drive the wedges into the log. Done properly, you ended up with the raw materials for a split rail fence.

I did not read all the comments so this may have been mentioned but the item you thought was a counter weight looks like a projectile from a Lyles Gun. I think they are narrower but that is the first thing that came to mind. If the river was bigger back in the day they may have used one to get a line across. Great hunt...thanks for the videos. NJ

This guy is world’s better than Marlin Perkins Was! Goin back a few years here, like the early to latter 60’s! The heavy object with the eyelet at the end of this video may be a “sounding weight”, used for checking water depth. They would attach lines with knots every 6’( 1 Fathom”) to check the water depth to keep from running aground.
