Americans accepting the tip culture is wild. Work without knowledge of your pay just blows my mind. Especially when the service industry needs you and still abuses you.

The employment conditions are based on the nationaly of the boat. ie where its registered ie cayman islands. Depending what form of superyacht its operating under. In this case when I worked charter we were paid a retainer and the tips were additional. When I worked on liveaboards in europe it was a salary with 2 on 1 off 12 hour days. Also note these tips are more than normal because the guests pay less for the charter, so generally they are expected to tip more
@Lewiss7423
@Lewiss7423 Год назад
These are vacations in the 100's of thousands. I'm pretty sure they get a wage. But a 2k tip for 2/3 day trip certainly helps. From what I've seen though, there are 2 types of workers on these super yachts; people who love sailing and people who are lost souls and/or are running away from something.
@richardthomson4693

@@Lewiss7423 First thing to take into account, very few charter are 3 days, this is a mostly for TV things. When I worked charters, they would be 7 day charters, most places really didn't want 3 day charter. The tips the tv guests are bigger than we would get for 7 charters as they dont have to pay the charter fee, its comped by the producers. Last time I heard they guest on Below decks pay for the food and booze and required to give a good tip

There are people in American making 50K +, by either bartending, valeting cars or waitressing. Also, those same people are not claiming anything to the IRS/ taxes. They only claim the wages placed on them by their employers. Which could be $1.00 to whatever. Because they stay below the 25k thresholds for “yearly income” they get a tax return. Mean while… The person making $15-$25hr, or the average median income of 48k yearly. After taxes (depending on the state is actually grossing 30k) Gets a 💩 return and sometimes even OWES taxes. The trick is to DO BOTH. work a salary job Monday-Friday, and bartend, valet, babysit, waitress or stripper. On Friday nights and Saturday nights.

This is a show called Below Deck, it’s a luxury yacht with a crew of about 12 people total. There’s one group of about 6-8 people who come aboard for 3 days, then they get off and another groups does their 3 day charter. They do about 12 a season so it’s about 6 weeks worth of work. Then it’s usually like a couple weeks rest and then back at it a couple times a year. About 12k-15k tips about 4-6 times a year plus the salary for the position. They probably make 100k-125k a year

it kind of blows me away. there is a huge price tag to rent one of those yachts for a week. now I'm poor so don't get me wrong here. but if I'm buying a product i want to know the full price in advance. this isn't a restaurant. and that crew should be well compensated from the yacht owner from the agreement to rent. everyone should know in advance what is expected from them and what is to begiven.

Plus assuming their still prolly getting paid a decent amount, maybe not great. But if just 1 of those tips they got was for like a week or less their making way more money tax free then most. Stfu about not getting sleep. You made 1500 at the lowest shown for what a week maybe 2? honestly how long is the private yacht booked for? Their in a life that many would prolly kill for. Get to see the world, doubt their being paid like a server in the states.

@MAX B she very much is because she chose to take that job and the risks that come along with it. A tip is not guaranteed especially if the customer doesn't feel that you earned it. I think they get paid for the show. They're there to provide a service on a boat you hired. They go beyond what they're hired for. Here is the thing... You go out to dinner when you are seated you're provided a waitress who basically does the same thing that they do. The only difference is, is you're on a boat not in a restaurant. You tip her so why would you question about tipping them.. getting paid for being on the show for being a waitress and getting paid to be a waitress. That's just my opinion. I look at it as they're your waitress or waiter and you tip them.

And that is how you get your employees to work hard for you show them you care by spreading the success to them! Because without them their would be no company I have worked for Billon dollar companies never go anything extra for busting my ass! I worked for a company that cleared over 200 million and got a 2,500 dollar Christmas bonus and 2,500 dollar paycheck the same week and they gave us a Christmas vacation through New Year’s! They did it every year they had good profit and even when they didn’t we still got good Christmas bonuses every year! It was the smallest company I have ever worked less than 50 employees and was treated better than any major company I have ever worked for.

Little explainer for you guys: tips are tax-free. You don’t pay sale tax, not business tax, no income tax. That is what is driving Americans more and more into a tipping culture. You pay minimum wage (even less for restaurant workers) and get the rest in tips. You save 30% in taxes on that. Cheaper for the customer and more cash for the worker. Ideally. Unless nobody tips. Then you are fucked and you have to sell your children to some guy who owns an Island. But that’s just life!

Anything longer makes this basically under minimum wage, assuming they are being paid at minimum due to tips. If they are being paid an hourly that's on par with normal sea crew then that's different.
