Welcome to another insightful NLPA Critique Session, where your co-founders, Matt Payne, Parkin, and Rajesh Jyothiswaran dive deep into a handful of entrants' images. In this episode, the team provides analysis of various submitted images, offering constructive critiques and sharing lessons that every photographer can learn from.
Join us as we explore the complex dance of colors, composition, and balance, and how these elements can dramatically enhance the impact of a photograph. We'll take you through the rich conversation full of professional tips and suggestions for photographers looking to refine their skills and increase their chances in competitions.
Episode Highlights Include:
Color Mastery: Learn the nuances of color temperature and color separation, along with the significant impact they can have on your photography. Understand the struggles and solutions when it comes to differentiating elements in your scenes.
Composition Critiques: Delve into the nitty-gritty of image composition as Matt discusses common issues like distractions, depth of field choices, the rule of thirds, and how to balance exposure to achieve stunning results.
Post-Processing Tips: Gain insights into the incremental changes that transform a good photo into a competition winner. Find out how post-production tweaks, specifically on simpler crops, desaturation, and the strategic use of black and white, can elevate your photographic work.
Key Takeaways:
1. Simplicity in Composition: Less is often more. Simplifying an image by cropping can help remove unnecessary distractions and focus the viewer's attention on the main subject.
2. Color and Light: Manipulating color saturation and paying attention to light sources can make or break a photo, and it's often what sets apart competition-level work from the rest.
3. Balancing the Frame: Understanding visual symmetry and balance is critical in composition. Small adjustments can significantly impact the overall feel of the image.
To all photographers looking to enhance their craft or prepare for the next big photo contest, this episode is an indispensable resource packed with actionable advice.

What you talked about here, in general, looks like you were trying to justify the judge's choice, kind of why a good image hasn't gone to the final stage. You contradict each other in every assessment: on one image, you say it has too much empty space (like you have no idea what negative space is in art); on the other, you say it's too tight composed and lacks air; on one image you say its composition is too busy, on the other you say it's too simple. And this eternal desire to cut images! I've been doing photography for 16 years already. Do you really think I didn't realize what I was doing when I composed a frame?.. And as a cherry on top, in every second image, you want to move a tree or a bush. How is it supposed to be performed, ha? Step to the left or to the right wasn't working, and you don't know it because you weren't there. All this critique has no sense at all-just a lame attempt to justify final decisions. I was hoping to understand why my images don't appeal to judges in this contest but found out only that you, guys, are unable to look wider; you are trapped by your personal preferences. Now, I really doubt this contest is worth participating in...

Thank you so much for the inclusion and critique of my images...I take on board all the feedback and for the tree image it was that colour. The Bass Rock one was rain. For the hills and heather one I did initially have a similar crop and felt too tight , then reverted back, it was a very dark and stormy day hence my foreground being a bit dark. Much appreciated guys.

Yeah I figured it was the proper colour as I've been in the woods in those conditions - really nice composition in my opinion.

@@largeformatlandscapeThanks it can't be easy to critique when not there to experience it

@@briannicholson2971 Yes and this is one of the problems with entering certain types of image I think. Although the result can be a brilliant representation of the moment. it's tough to compare with another equally well composed image with 'engaging' light. However, this is one of the reasons why we have the project category because these sorts of images can be combined into a larger collection that evokes far more than a single image. That said, the project would still need to have more than just "here's a bunch of trees" for it to do well - witness Adam Gibbs' Vancouver logging project (which I thought was a fantastic project in all aspects)

Yeah for me who is familiar with the Bass Rock and the gulls that reside on it are easy for me but I understand for example what the critique feedback was so it's given me some thoughts for the future.
