Love to listen to a man that is well versed in life! He has my respect! If more church locations would follow his lead the hunger in america would be neal. A garden of beauty and abundance. Your interviews are really good, ty.

Thank you Ripe Tomato Farms. There is a local tomato grower that I use as example of starting small and building an operation that is one to admire. I currently work in the agriculture industry in research, but it's my dream to grow locally available nutritious food, especially leafy greens.

Once someone starts growing with No-till soil: They rarely switch back to store bought soil that's what I've noticed. That garden sure looks great!

Great job to Howard and you. I am assuming most of these interviews are at farms within 90 miles from your place. I think this is cool how by interview these people you building a network of vast resources of information. Thanks

You're welcome. I hope to get to more farms further away, but it costs money to travel so I'm trying to visit as many as I can locally. But yeah, it's been great to connect with local farmers. Thanks for watching!

Great video Josh and Howard. Josh, you do great interviews. If you could add one question for me to your future interviews, I would appreciate it. I would like to know how many man hours are going into the farm and how many hours for marketing. You are giving us great views of farms and Howard spoke about what crops would be coming in April to those spaces, so it would be great to know how much time farms at each of these scales require. You do a great job in your bed flip videos telling how much time it took to flip this bed and your video where you prepare your CSA shares is pretty informative, but maybe an overview of a week in the life or something would be particularly helpful to aspirational market growers. I was amazed the day I prepared my first round of CSA shares how much time harvesting, cleaning and packaging took!
@JoshSattinFarming
@JoshSattinFarming 4 года назад
Thank you for the ideas. The majority of hours spent by market gardeners will be in the harvest/wash/pack process for sure. I would really like to do some separate videos for marketing, but I haven't wrapped my head around how to present that information yet. Thanks for watching!

It's wonderful to see many growers now regenerating the soil and increasing efficiency but eventually we are going to have to deal with the plastic issue. There is absolutely nothing natural about that and we are not helping our world if you multiply this by the incredibly large number of small growers setting up shop everywhere all over the world. We need to put our heads together on this one. This all started with trying to beat the competition to market. Well, we need to take a hard long look at where it's gotten us. Let's get serious here. My solution ... no plastic, you get what you get where you live.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 года назад
You're so right. Its not only about beating others to market, its also about growing things in climates that they normally wouldn't thrive. Still....better to grow it locally than it is to ship it....but you're right, so much plastic is painful to see.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Where I live in Quebec it's a short season and there are plastic greenhouses everywhere, I agree, painful to see. When I can afford it I will be building a more permanent structure because I won't be contribute to the problem. With electric transport coming soon for delivery trucks we should be able to start dealing with the elephant in the room that I don't hear any superstar market gardeners talking about. They are going to have to deal with it sooner or later.
@JoshSattinFarming
@JoshSattinFarming 4 года назад
There is no perfect solution. I think that a few small farmers buying plastic for their hoophouses (that lasts years) more than offsets the environmental impact of shipping produce across the world. The more people that get into buying local produce also helps the movement of more local and sustainable food.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 года назад
@@JoshSattinFarming I agree. I think that truehealth's point was that with electric vehicle shipping likely coming, does the delta shift out of locally produced's favour? Its an interesting discussion. I have always wondered if a corn-based plastic could be used in many of these hi and low tunnel setups? If you don't live near the ocean, you just don't realize how bad the plastic situation has become. :(
@truehealthnow
@truehealthnow 4 года назад
@@JoshSattinFarming So what happens to the plastic after you're done? You can still do local, just not everything. We just need to be more creative and focus on permanence if you do want to extend your season. I'm in the middle of a Permaculture design and teaching course and have been growing since the 90's using the DD method. I realize now that things have to change, especially with the successful new market gardeners.

Do some research. Go to local farmer's markets and talk to farmers. The biggest factor of if a market garden will be profitable is the market that you are selling to.
