These comments talking smack..lets get something straight here haters,the guy is a white belt,he's not going to be perfect,it takes many many years to really learn something.Second,the comments regarding his physical status,he doesn't need to be in shape before starting,and he clearly stated that one of his goals was to get in shape.Respect to him for deciding to take that first step in getting there.
Perhaps the people criticising this student should remember the following: Ye Ui (Courtesy) Guk Gi (Self control) By berating this student you are NOT upholding the tenets of Taekwondo... shame on you.
Those pushups were pitiful, but I‘d think that his balance has most likely improved majorly from Day 1, and he is probably much better now. Maybe a world champion.
My god, people are so picky, why would you try to put people off martial arts?, we need to encourage people to take up martial arts not put them off !!!!!!!!!! This guy did his best, everyone's basic physical ability is different, he's a big chap, so push ups are very difficult, (put someone on your back and then do them - you'll see what i mean) It will be a while until he develops the muscle to be able to push up his own bodyweight, but if he carries on he will get there. Some of his techniques have little or no reaction force but it's early days, the instructor can fine tune his technique later, there's no rush. The main thing at this grade is to remember things, some of it gets forgotten - so what? THAT'S WHY WE'RE THERE, THAT'S WHY WE ALL GO. The proficiency comes with practice, practice only happens over time, you can't practice quickly. THE MARTIAL ARTS IS FOR EVERYONE !!! ALL SIZES, ALL CREEDS, ALL ABILITIES, ABLE BODIED, DISABLED, EVERYONE !!!!!! I've even seen a Chimpanzee doing Martial Arts (quite funny actually). Keep 'em coming in the door, that;s the main thing.
24 hours in a day. Taekwondo is a way of life. I think he did ok, with time and as his training continues he will get better. For the ones that are booing I say "the journey of a thousand steps begins with the first". This guy is out there doing instead of giving negative criticism.
Why knock the kid? He's progressing from a White to a Yellow Belt. This progression is really an encouragement move. He gave the best he could. As far as only being able to do 5 push-ups, its a wise person who knows his limitations. He could be on the streets getting up to strife but he isn't, he's learning a discipline, so lets encourage people like that. More power to him.
Well Said. The amount of negativity I see on youtube is horrifying. Good on the lad for trying and putting 100% effort in his training. A black belt is a white belt that never gave up. I hope he's still doing it and not caring what others are saying. Martial Arts isn't just about beating someone and winning a fight - it's about discipline and changing yourself to be a better person... which clearly a lot of individuals commenting on this video need. Every dojang does things differently. If his instructors say 'do it this way' then the lads not going to ignore that and risk not getting his belt just to please the idiots on here who have no idea what they're on about. As a 2nd Dan, I really don't like the way this grading was held. A grading isn't all about the technique, especially at the low Kup grades, self-discipline and attitude is most important.So all the talking shouldn't have happened. Give the command and let the student follow, if the technique is wrong but is shown with full commitment, that is absolutely fine. Also I found it slightly wrong that the master had to be called Sir at any given moment, a bow is enough to show respect to a high grade, however well done on passing your grade :)

Some people are just so toxic. Understand that he's still a white belt. And dont call him out of shape, thats kind of the point of Tae Kwon Do, to get fit, flexible and to learn self defense.
First off i was not refusing to do the push ups. I was physically unable to do them. Second this is nearly a year ago. I am now a purple belt going to be red so i have much improved. And it seems other people dont think i was that bad. I won two gold medals and a bronze in the Rhode Island Open Tae Kwon Do State Championship.
Rhode Island! I knew I liked you! I grew up in Newport. Brother, when you're a dan grade, put up another video and show them all what you turned into. Nothing like a tornado kick to silence critics.
You only have to be better than one person and that is the person you were before you took the test. The only other test is combat and that depends on the opponent you have sparring doesn't mean anything if it doesn't work when you need it. I have seen many styles and I have seen Black belts beat by lower belts and I have seen street fighters do a great deal of damage to Higher and lower belts. Practice and train to master you own fear and your own desire to prove how good you are.
Hey man, for a white belt going to yellow, you did good. I've seen some higher ranking students in many different schools still not at the level you're at when it comes to quality. Keep it up. Osu

I’m a yellow belt and that is not yellow belt testing it !! He is testing to get white yellow belt! And it doesn’t go white belt, yellow belt!! It goes - white , white yellow, yellow , orange, green , blue , purple , red , jr black, black
Jon Farthing He has done his best but before starting the belt he should've gotten more into shape, I know he has done well but he just needs more flexibility and power in some places of his body all in all he has tried really well
as a black belt...this was interesting....I applaud him for completing his test....a black uniform in my school....reserved for black belts.....and when asked to do 10 push up's, there would NOT be no " im not good at push up's"......but this all goes back to the instructor and how the students are taught/disciplined
I've been in TKD since 99 and I'm about to test for my third degree. There were a few years that were spotty for me when it comes to attending class so I'm farther behind than I'd probably be. But one of the lessons I learned while in TKD and working as an assistant instructor is that one person's 100% may not look like someone else's 100%. "It's not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the area, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood..." That guy got into TKD knowing he wasn't in his best shape and probably wanted more for himself and that's what he's doing. Good on you! I just found your channel and I hope to see more TKD videos. If there aren't anymore, I know that TKD isn't for everyone and I for one would never hold a grudge against someone that tried it and decided it wasn't for them.
Everyone should remember that this is not his fault, but the masters fault for not teaching him properly. You never put someone up for a graduation, if they can't do it right. It is the responsibility of the Sabumnim that has failed here.
He did great!!! this guy did really good for his yellow belt. This is your first belt. There will be no perfection.. as time progresses and the years go on he will get better and better.. In a few years when he gets black belt. He will loose the weight and he will get in shape. I lost 20 pounds training for my black belt. It was intense. This guy will get there. This is just the beginning. I think he did great. As he goes thru the belts it will get more strict.
I just had my 2nd dan black belt test and this was refreshing. It brought back a lot of memories. The only thing I would interject here is that the "I can't" would have been frowned upon greatly. You would do the push ups as best as you can even if you couldn't do all ten. You sometimes get tested on your heart as opposed to your actual ability. How much do you want it?
You can tell he was ready for this belt. He did pretty well for a white belt. It’s interesting how different schools and instructors do tests differently… and how different curriculum can be even within the same style. However, he showed proper respect and good effort and was able to perform his techniques set and form without major mistakes… I would have certified him as well. Hope he sticks with it over the years, and looks back on this early video when he becomes a Black Belt and sees such a huge improvement. Good for him.
Alright every one on here claiming to be a "red belt" ....please go away...lies never helped anyone keyboard warriors. Listen brother, I compete in Muay Thai and in MMA. Anyone on here claiming to be some master fighter please feel free to come to Muay Thai School USA in North Hollywood and show your skills. Listen dude don't let anybody hating on your pushups, kicks, or time spent testing get to you. No one is amazing when they first start, and the whole point of Martial Arts is admitting your weaknesses and learning how to beat them into submission. Keep training and learning, and fight free. Well done and congrats on your yellow belt, now hold yourself to a much higher standard and grow in that. Also, this is my bias...but I would tap into a little bit of Muay Thai too ;)
Sure but dont you think he should master his techniques 100% before getting the next belt? Manage to do 10 pushups before he takes the test. The master wanted 10 and he knew he had to do 10 so why wasnt he able to (he had the time to prepare). Its like building a castle on soft ground, you will never build the castle to its maximum if you dont have the fundamentals. You get what i mean?
TheUnseenBefore I didn't say a lot, I was honest and encouraging, so I don't get how that compares to someone claiming to be a grandmaster in their art. It means a lot more to someone when someone who actually competes speaks life into them.
olivator1000 The guy has to start somewhere, I have no idea who his trainer is or how they do their testing, but people are so quick to judge someone when they don't even know where they're coming from. He's young and just started, leave him alone, it never helps to keyboard warrior someone down.
MrWolverine113 Of course but the test seems too easy. He didnt even sweat. Ive seen other of his test and are just as this one. Its too easy to get on a high level. Its sad and it takes the credibility of traditional martial arts even though they are the best. I glad Im in an incredible Dojo I could not feel happier. Im not angry at him. I just find it disappointing.
Everyone tests to their ability not yours or anyone else. We don't know what kind of shape he was in when he started out. It is still a long road to Black Belt and plenty of time to improve. His techniques are actually not bad. A real instructor can see the potential he has.

I fell Bad for this kid, and Anyone who goes to this so called school. He got Ripped off. NO REAL instructor will Allow a white belt to break 2 boards with a hand tech let alone with a Punch. POWER Break???? He has No Idea How to apply his hips, Which is How you Generate POWER. Also the kid is tired because he HASN'T learned how to relax between moves, and Apply his power,and I Wouldn't call this Tae Kwon Do. Well not the TKD I've been training in for the past 20 yrs, and my Master Instructor has been teaching for 30+ yrs.
Confidence is sooo important. Anyone involved in TKD should have respect. Gradings are scary but the people are very respectful and understanding. If you muck up, compose yourself and continue - don't freak out and have a panic, just carry on and look as though it was all apart of the grading :) Good luck!
I respect the student who wants to Be better physically, while learning to protect himself. You work together as a team to help each other to develop through learning forms, one step fighting, and free fighting techniques, or sparring. You learn honor and respect of each other.
I am into 4th week of TKD training, and I am feeling so happy for this guy. I have had a disc bulge at L4-L5 and due to which I have a very tight glute and hamstring and I am struggling so much with stretching and forward bending.

The first form he did was Takiyoko shodan. It's a preliminary kata designed for younger Shotokan karate students before they are introduced to the real katas, starting with heian shodan
Sorry to say but you really need to workout more. I'm a white belt who can do 50 consecutive push ups without stopping and 120 sit ups without stopping. Barely in martial arts for 3 months, no prior exercise or experience before joining.
Poor kid is getting scammed on his money and on this Martial Art or dojo he is at... And the black belt is trying to give him work out advice in streght when he looks weak, out of shape and looks like he does not work out at the gym... Man I just hope you find your self a better Martial Arts School and a true self defences Martial Art school...

This was one of the first schools that i've seen that was similar to my school's program. They went way harder on testing for white belt than we do though. I didn't read down to far to see negative comments, but keep in mind that he is a beginner and a teenager. You still need to keep the program approachable for younger kids as well as older adults like myself. I am not in great shape, but I try hard when I am there. I am in the last ranks (we call Bo Dan) prior to testing for Black Belt. If I had to live up to everyone else's expectations I wouldn't still be in the program. I wish I had stayed with it in my 20s when I was a blue belt and had way more energy, but now I do the best I can to be a TKD practitioner.
In my opinion these tests are too short. I take Kenpo and tests, even for the 3-5 year olds, the tests are about 1-3 hours long. Nobody ever tests alone, and we actually fight and freestyle. These tests are easy, and as far as I see, no Taekwondo person stands a chance against Kenpoists. Kenpo tests are about one or three hours long, when I tested for my brown belt in November of 2015, the test was 3 hours long. I was very tired, and trust me, we will all love to just show off our techniques and katas for three minutes without showing how we can defend ourselves. These tests should be longer
the tawkwondo school I go to had tests that lasted 4 to 6 hours long. but the black belt test is at least 16 hours long lasting for two days. first day endurance second day is knowledge. this is in fact a really basic test that barely touch the requirements. so I wouldn't base everything on one test. it's possible that this school isn't even listed in wtf, and that it's just a dojo belt
Situps- horrible. Pushups-horrible and why are you doing them on your hands!? Guys do em on their knuckles and girls do em on their hands. Why the hell would u say "Uhh im not good at pushups" Just do them! Kicks were okay at best your form was horrible, I've seen little kids do it better. if I was that Master I would've failed you

Taking my yellow belt grading in taekwondo soon.. Tbh i can't do 10 perfect push ups either. The moves i'm required to do are pretty different to the ones you had to do to get your yellow belt anyways, congrats on getting your yellow belt. (I know this video was posted a few years ago) Also, does anyone know if it usually costs money to take a grading test? (It does where i do it)
I’m getting my purple belt next Saturday and I’m thirteen and for some reason I spar black belts and still kick their butts the black belts are really good aswell their not fake ones lol great progress to this white belt when u do push ups make sure your arms go In not out you could hurt your shoulder blade that’s what happened to me when I first started it hurt for a while congrats g and for those moving on in belts I wish you the best of luck!!
how lond did you train before testing to yellow belt and how many days do you train a week?? when i first started it took me about 3 months and i trained 5 days a week
That was 10 years ago…I wonder how far he went with his practice. I just started last week and I’m far from where I want to be. I practice yoga almost daily and I thought I was pretty flexible but the flexibility you need for TKD takes it on a whole new level.
Very good. Breaking can be scary to a beginner but speed and power will come in time. Condition the knuckles by doing pushups on the first two knuckles.
I have 2 bad knees. I've been practicing almost 3 years. As long as you take precautions you should be ok. Wear a knee brace, take Aleve or similar anti-inflammatory painkiller, rest if you need to. For me TKD really helped my knees, it still hurts doing some things but my Master is very understanding. I also have asthma. TKD is very tough on me because of these 2 things, but let me tell you, I'm VERY happy I started and stayed with it. Martial Arts are very rewarding!
has the tests changed since my days in the late 90's ? i dont remember doing any pad work. only thign we ever did was the tkd tenets, the tkd pattern and that was it.

I have got an osgood schlatter disease on my knee and i would like to know if it is possible to start taekwondo. Is it possible to use knee pads while training?
Great Job! I am a brown belt, but I remember my yellow belt was one of the tests I was most nervous for. My teacher required more skills and we had to do traditional forms. But I was so happy when I got it. My mom says TKD is harder to learn when you are a grown up so great job on being dedicated.
Lukey Janno Then your dojang doesn't follow the traditional belt system. I compete at WTF tournaments, traditional, kukkiwon, following the teachings in Korea and the Olympics. There most certainly IS a brown belt. If there wasn't i'd have no one to compete with. I am sorry you go to a McDojo that doesnt.
***** Brown belt, after purple before red in traditional kukkiwan. Some schools omit the belt add other belts one school i went to visiting with a friend even had a cammo belt. That is ATA. WTF is not ATA. WTF is an olympic sport taught all around the world with the same standards. ATA is... meh. Also if you go to a DOJO then you arent taking TKD. You are more than likely taking "American Karate" calling itself TKD cause people cant tell the difference. TKD students go to a Dojang. Dojo= Karate Dojang = TKD. I am not saying there is anything wrong with traditional schools of Karate. In fact having taken Shodokan karate i know it is totally badass. But american karate/ American TKD is a ripoff hybrid basterdization of the two sports and most schools are McDojos focusing more on making money than teaching martial arts. So enjoy your McDojo
And i may sound like a pompass asshole about this but the posts trying to belittle me saying in TKD there is no brown belt are bullshit. For example, my school does not have a green belt. I would never tell someone who has a green belt that there is no green belt in TKD. There are 3 belt systems. One has green belts one has brown and one has neither. Traditional schools usually have brown or neither. Being a dick to someone just cause your school doesnt have a belt means they will be a dick to you. Respect your senior belts! Or if you are a black belt or red belt, respect your junior belts
I was, I believe 15, when I did my yellow belt grading. I had to do 20 press ups with good form (nose touching floor) AND I’m a girl (only saying this as most girls in my year can’t do a single push up). This teacher should be pushing his student harder.
is there a difference? my uncle does wtf and thinks itf is better, but a lot of people say wtf is better than itf. do you think you could clarify that?
