Yellow-crowned Woodpecker (Leiopicus mahrattensis) on nest hole-feeding chicks, filmed at Valsad, Gujarat, India.
Yellow-crowned Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker with a densely-spotted black-and-white back and blotchy brown-and-white underparts. Female has an all-golden crown; male has a red forecrown as presented in video. They have chosen a baboon tree crevice - underside of a sloping branch, about 10-12 feet above ground level, as their nesting hole. This spot is well-hidden and inconspicuous. Although many birds forage nearby, none disturb the nest. However, the woodpecker remains very alert and avoids approaching the nest when other birds are perched on the same tree.
The woodpecker waits for the chicks' chirping sounds before feeding them, which is new to observe. Once, it waited for half an hour with its beak full of insects because the chicks did not respond to its call. It’s truly amazing to see such behavior. Enjoy the video!
