I’ve done a lot of research on the yellow ribbon program, as I am enlisting in the United States Air Force, and wish to further the educational goals that I have for myself, but you were able to provide as much clarity as possible, with regards to the variance of funding provided by each school and program. Thank you!
I am getting out of the services this month and been looking up schools for nursing.. most of them needing the YRB which they do offer. I did more research using the weams tool and they only do it for that academic year! This is very important information and i'm hoping they just havent renewed it yet because it doesnt make sense going into a college for one year and next year you cannot pay for it because they don't support it anymore..
Curious how it works if I have just 1 month of post 9-11 G.I left at 100% - so a semester's worth. Seems like the Yellow Ribbon isn't calculated per semester. Kinda seems like they calculate it up front (yep, you did verify that part as I was typing this) Id be happy if I got anything though, tbh.
Also, quick question. Since it’s a dollar for dollar match, there is something I’m still confused about. Let’s say the school cost $45,000; For the yellow ribbon program at this school, they only give $25,000…Since it is a dollar for dollar match, the VA also gives $25,000…That’s a total of $50,000, so what happens with the extra $5,000 dollars? Is it something you can use to take extra classes? Is it allocated to your BAH?….
Good question. There will be no excess payments from the yellow ribbon program. Whatever the difference is between what the GI Bill will cover and the cost of the school is, will be split 50/50 between the VA and the school. Make sense?
I want to serve active duty then pursue my PhD. Which will take 6 years. Will the GI bill cover all of this or should I be looking towards the yellow ribbon?
The YRP is not a factor of duration of program, but cost of program. The YRP is if you go to a private school or a school in which you have to pay out of state tuition and the GI Bill doesn't cover the yearly cost. My best advice to complete your PhD using benefits, is to take as many classes towards your goal as possible while on active duty. If you can use TA and FAFSA while on active duty for 4 years, you'll be pretty well set up to complete your goal. If there is any gap, you may be eligible for VR&E when you get out, but there is no guarantee for that. You basically have to get hurt... so not necessarily worth it. Check out my video on going to school while on active duty here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OK6Yky7N2vE.html
So do you apply for the program while applying to the college or do you have to get accepted to the college first or what?? I’m asking because I want to apply to multiple schools, but I really only want to go to the one that would accept me for the yellow ribbon program.
That's a really good question! I believe you have to be accepted to the college first. However, I would call one of the schools you're applying to and confirm with them first. I can't say for certain.
If I have 6 months left on my post 9/11 and want to use it for a 15 month MBA program, with the yellow ribbon covering the remaining months. Will I still be able to receive MHA through yellow ribbon, even though my post 9/11 housing ran out?
Might be a long shot. I went to a private school. Towards the end of my benefits, I ended up taking a loan to cover the remaining expenses. I just recently found out about the yellow ribbon program, and found out that the school did provide the yellow ribbon program. My counselor wasn't really experienced with VA related things. Is it worth to find out if they had the program availability the year I was in?
Oof, I'm sorry to hear that man. I've never heard of a scenario for getting the YRB after the fact to repay loans. However, I always encourage people to push for what they need. You never know what you can make happen with some persistence.
This video was very helpful. I’m currently serving in the Air Force on active duty orders ,but want to switch to the reserve. Do you know if you can use the yellow ribbon program if you are still in the reserve ,but want to school full time using the post 9/11 G.I. bill?
So if a school pays the remaining tuition that the GI bill does not cover, does that mean they will split the difference of what is remaining with the VA? Or does that VA then match what the university covered?
It's a dollar for dollar match. So if the school agrees the remaining balance will be covered, the VA and school will split the difference. If the school only offers $10k, the VA will also give $10k. Make sense?
How does this program apply to dependents of 100% and permanently disabled veterans if at all? Do yellow ribbon schools open the tuition beaks to these dependents?
BAH is only a factor of the GI Bill. The YR does not add our impact BAH at all. It only covers some or all of the tuition difference paid to the school to make sure you don't have to pay out of pocket.
Awesome video! I am wondering if you could use the Post 9/11 gi bill and play a sport in college like track? Also, could you dorm at the school and pocket all the BAH given? Thanks!
Thank you! You can definitely play sports and take advantage of the extracurricular activities. You will not get BAH if you live on campus. The BAH will go towards that housing directly to the school. You won't see any of it.
Did you watch the video? You have to make sure the school offers yrp and make sure it would cover all tuition when combined with the GI Bill then apply.
Technically yes, but because it has to be used with the GI Bill, I don't recommend it. Watch my video on the post 9/11 GI Bill to better understand why
@@jasonburds thank you so much for responding. Cause I’ll be using the Yellow Ribbon benefit this summer but I wasn’t sure how it affected my housing allowance. I’m relieved to hear this 😂
You can apply for it. If you're currently enrolled talk to the VA liaison at your school. It will only apply to your last term (if that) since you only have one day of the GI Bill left.
Is it a private school? It's always worth reaching out to the school to see if it's something they could apply for. I recently got an employer approved. It took about a year.
@@LawDogg01 got it. Well maybe do some digging to see if they qualify for the Fry Scholarship. There are some similarities between Chapter 35 and Fry, but I don't know your situation enough to speak to it for you.
