Yellow Sweet Clover Identification - Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants 

Hey guys in this video we discuss how to identify Yellow Sweet Clover or Melilotus officianalis. Yellow Sweet Clover is a plant commonly found alongside roadsides, trails, and driveways. While it's not a true clover species, it gets that part of its name from the arrangement of the 3 leaflets. On the margins of the leaves you will notice very small serrations and the leaflets are usually a long elongated shape or sometimes linear. The leaves and branches of this plant grow in an alternating pattern along the stem and the stem is tough and firm but not woody. The yellow flowers bloom anywhere from April through October depending upon where you live but it usually has a month or two of flowering in any location. The flowers are yellow with five petals but the upper petal is larger than the four underneath it. The flowers come out in elongated spikes and there can be dozens of spikes per plant and dozens of flowers per spike. Yellow Sweet Clover has a nice fragrance when bruised and it has use as food and medicine. The leaves can be made into a tea for enjoyment or medicine and the fragrance is associated with coumarins, which is also an anti coagulant.
