The town of Zheltiye Vody on the Zheltaya River is located 120 kilometers west of the Dnieper, between Kriviy Rog and Alexandria. Iron ore outcrops in these places color the river water yellow, which is where the name of the tract of land Zheltiye Vody comes from.
Since the Cossack times the crossing of the Yellow Brod is known, Cossack wintering grounds were located here. In 1648 the battle between the Cossack army of Bohdan Khmelnitsky and the Polish army of Stefan Potocki took place here, which ended with the first major victory of the Zaporozhian people in the War of Liberation of the Ukrainian people (there is a monument).
The present city was founded in 1895 as a working settlement of the Yellow River at the iron mine of entrepreneur Lvov and engineer Borutsky. In 1898, ore mining began in the Krasnokutsk quarry of merchant Kopylov. With the arrival of the Bolsheviks, the mines were nationalized.
