People are ridiculous. "Lift A Sail" is a genius album. Unfortunately some of the Yellowcard's fan-base is not grown enough to know that bands tend to grow up and try new things. That's what happened on this album. Yellowcard have grown and the same happened to their sound.
Yellowcard didn't make this album for their old fans. They made this album to expand their fan base, to create music everyone can enjoy! There are songs with violin solos on this album. Convocation, the first track on the album, which is actually an intro, features an incredible violin solo by Sean Mackin that will have your eyes paralyzed to the amazing sound of the violin. You think you can judge an album by 4 songs? Please people, this album still has 9 other songs! I can assure that if you love rock and good music you will love the rest of this record!
I got previews of all the songs on the album. No, they're not leaks. Some buddies of mine over at MerchNow sent me a previews CD of the new record. I guess it's just a stroke of luck for me
Yah, I wasn't a huge Yellowcard fan until I heard this song and I was like shiiiit! I LOVE THIS BAND NOW! Reminds me of the new Angels and Airwaves album coming out in December
Lyrics anyone?. Something here, it never looks right We've been fighting on the front lines for so long I go digging in the graveyard To find the remnants of your heart but it's gone And I won't wait for my revenge I will seek to see the end And I won't sing a battle cry I will let the sleepless lie Sing, "Oh oh oh oh, whoa oh oh" Crash the gates, light a fire, and watch it burn Sing, "Oh oh oh oh, whoa oh oh" Storm the walls, light a fire, and watch it burn Sing, "Oh oh oh" Now it's crying all around us Smoke rising from the ground up and I stare You go digging in the graveyard But the remnants of my heart are nowhere And I won't crave to feel contempt I will feed from these forget And I won't claim a victory I will revel silently Sing, "Oh oh oh oh, whoa oh oh" Crash the gates, light a fire, and watch it burn Sing, "Oh oh oh oh, whoa oh oh" Storm the walls, light a fire, and watch it burn Sing, "Oh oh oh oh" Sing, "Oh oh oh oh, whoa oh oh" Crash the gates, light a fire, and watch it burn Sing, "Oh oh oh oh, whoa oh oh" Storm the walls, light a fire, and watch it burn.
I never really looked into this band, even though I've been listening to Ocean Avenue since i was born it feels like...but this new album is absolutely killer. This song and Transmission Home are killers.
There's actually violin in every song and he probably did the most work for this album along with Ryan. The violin is just used in many different ways.

DexDacozed Sean shouldn't be subtle (so much) like he has been on the four released songs. His change of pace and the loss of LP is really making this album hot or miss for the fan base right now.
Look at the interviews man. Read the articles. Sean was very involved in the creative process, the violin was just used differently it's in this song too. Listen to the background closer. It seems like it was done very carefully and meticulously. Give the guys a fair chance with something new before being all passively aggressive about the change.
"Make Me So" and "One Bedroom" are amazing. I'm really happy you got those out there first. About Transmission Home and Crash the Gates, i hope they are just random titles on the CD and not meant as singles or something, because they are good, but not great in my Opinion. I hope theres still some really good stuff on the CD we havent heard yet. But dont get me wrong, I still love every second of every new song, just wanted to get this out there :)
I understand wanting to try something new but I never been sold on gimmick albums. Every Yellowcard album has had their signature sound with something different mixed in (Two Weeks from Twenty, Holly Wood Died's score at the end, Here I Am Alive, Gift & Curses, etc) and that worked perfectly. Dedicating a whole album to a different sound this late in the career seems like a misstep. I still preordered the album, I enjoy Transmission Home & One Bedroom, but its the first time as a YC fan (Since Ocean Ave) where I have to keep listening to songs to have them grow on me.
I'm still hoping that the other songs can salvage the album for me. The only one I liked so far is Transmission Home, and that too only somewhat. I understand that YC are going for a new musical direction with this album, and it'll probably broaden their fanbase quite a bit, but I just can't seem to get into the new tunes. As it's already been said, the violin isn't the main theme anymore, it's much more subtle and blended in. I'm also missing the usual 'climax' found in YC songs, not to mention that the drums just don't seem to have the energy that LP did while playing them (no offense to the new drummer of course) Still, one can keep hoping.
Generic? The music they released on Hopeless Records was generic as fuck! Just because it doesn't conform to your little pubescent scene kid style of pop rock, doesn't make it generic. This is the opposite of generic.
***** LOLOL! the drummer (nathan young of Anberlin) is incredibly creative actually. just listen to some of Anberlin's songs. every single drum sample in these songs was made by him, he actually helped produce the record as well. Lift A Sail wouldn't be Lift A Sail without him
The violinist, Sean Mackin, is the only member of Yellowcard that's been there since their first album. Ryan came in to be the singer, they switched out guitarists and LP just left. It's weird to keep calling them Yellowcard when almost all of the members have been recycled.
Yellowcard is not unique in this though. They've been around for over ten years and most of the guys probably had no clue what they were getting into when they started touring across the country because they were just kids. People grow up, value other aspects of life more, and change in general. Just look at Sum 41 and Senses Fail--they're both writing new music that the fan base is receptive to despite only having one original member. Although I'm not the biggest fan of the new sound, I'm glad they're still doing their thing, ya know?
Yeah, I guess it shouldn't matter who's actually behind the instruments, just as long as the music is good. I think I'm just a little bummed that LP left. He was a pretty big inspiration for me and I feel like he fit the band better than their new drummer.
I've loved Yellowcard from day one and they are truly amazing! Their music, either rock or acoustic, it still rocks! I absolutely love this song! Keep it up guys! Love you guys always and forever!
in my opinion, the chorus of this song is the best of all the album, the vocals with the guitar is perfect, my favorite album songs are this and transmission home
They're just doing another 'Lights & Sounds'. Fair play to them. They grew up years ago but have been trying to write the next 'Ocean Avenue' since Paper Walls.
I enjoyed Paper Walls, When You're Through Thinking Say Yes, and Southern Air more than Ocean Avenue so I'm more than okay with that. Besides Ryan Mendez is MUCH better than their old guitarist
So i need to get Paper Walls, really listen to When You're Through Thinking Say Yes and figure out whether or not Southern Air is better than Ocean Avenue
