Yellowed Nintendo SNES Perfect Restoration

Keeping with the random theme of the channel this week i have decided to fully restore this super yellow super Nintendo entertainment system.
First i remove 6 security screws from the base to allow me to separate the two halves then once inside i can start to take it apart properly, first i removed the power switch then the cartridge ejection lever i then removed all the screws from the motherboard and removed it from the lower casing.
I then completed the job of stripping the upper case which is pretty simple as all the items are just snapped together. Once this was done i moved onto stripping the board this was done by removing several screws and releasing the metal protection plates/ heat sink and that was the teardown over.
I then washed the plastics in soapy water to remove all grime and grease in preparation for the next step which was to soak them in hydrogen peroxide and uv light for several days to remove the years of yellowing that has taken place, This process is also known as retr0brite.
While the plastics were bleaching i set about stripping and replating all the screws as they are old and a nice fresh coat of zinc is always a good thing. I sat the screws in acid for around an hour and when all the coating was gone i related immediately so as to minimize the time the bare steel is exposed to the air and prevent any rust setting in.
Once plated the parts were sat aside and left to cure while i cleaned the circuit board with a soft brush and some isopropyl alcohol, the alcohol is used to clean the board as it evaporates very quickly so doesn't do any damage to the components but removes all the dirt.
After a few days had passed it was time to take the plastics out of the peroxide and see how they look as you can see from the video they cleaned up really well, Note the colour of the peroxide afterwards all the yellow from the plastic has ended up dissolved in the H202... neat :).
So after the casings were rinsed and dried all that was left was to build it all back together and see if it works.
I hope you enjoy it and ill see you all in the next video.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.
If you like what you see and have any ideas for the channel or would even like to donate something to restore to the channel please get in touch. :)
And as usual if you liked the video please like share and subscribe and help the channel grow.

Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.

A perfect video. No BS filler talk or cheesy, inappropriate music; just visually clear and to the point. Perfect restoration (someone commented below about getting the grey right and not going too far). I'd rate this 9.98 out of 10, only because it would have been that extra .02 better if you had booted up Super Metroid instead, but that's just personal preference. :)

Hey, great job! I have read a lot about retrobright but I'still afraid of dunking my c64 into that, so I have some questions I must ask you. How is the plastic after UV? Is it still ok? What about its texture?
@CuhShark
@CuhShark 4 года назад
@@CP200S Speaking from experiments and experience - the plastic will actually become less brittle after the yellowing is treated. Texture will be completely preserved. Just make sure not to ever use the salon cream method as any uneven application will result in bright streaking across the plastic. So far, the retrobrite technique has proven to be fairly safe and forgiving. However, if you're using sunlight over UV LEDs you want to constantly check on any parts that weren't originally white, off-white, or bright gray. Sunlight acts much quicker than the LEDs so keep that in mind or you'll risk bleaching darker colored plastics. One of my first tests was on SNES power and reset switches which are a purple colored plastic - my childhood switches were pretty much brown from being in a shed for nearly 10 years. The peroxide definitely turned them back to purple but not only did I make the mistake of using the salon cream, which resulted in a very blotchy appearance. I also left them out for just a little too long and ended up bleaching them. Sorry for the long reply, I'd just thought I'd add what I could to help you feel more comfortable with trying this out.
