This is an experiment to see if hydrogen peroxide based hair developer will remove yellowing from plastic when heated in an oven to about 185 degrees Fahrenheit / 85 degrees Celsius. It turns out that it does not work with just heat and I needed to use the conventional method of putting the yellowed plastic in the solution facing the sun to remove yellowing. Ultimately there was still some yellowing in the badly stained component, but it was much better than when I had started. The product I used was the Salon Care 40 volume clear (liquid) hair developer and I diluted it in water so that the solution would cover my components. The developer was purchased from a Sally Beauty Supply for under $10. I believe gloves should be worn when working with the hair developer as it left a whiteish residue on my skin and I know that eye protection should be used as the hydrogen peroxide in the developer is very bad for eyes. There is also a cream version of this hair developer where folks would apply the cream to their yellowed plastic, place it in a transparent bag and leave it in the sun to remove the yellowing. The downside with the cream is that I understand that it can leave streaks, but the liquid is problematic as the plastic has a tendency to float.
