I think there isn't a better way to describe coolness as these guys do when they "talk" their very special language. There never was nor will be a better band. I love Yellowjackets so much! All along the different phases they've been through during their whole 30 years of existence

Hello Mr DeMario from one jazz fan to another. You stated that the sax solo is one of the greatest that you ever hear, Cool. Here is the greatest sax solo I ever heard it is by Ronnie Laws the song is called total wave it starts out mild and then after a minute or 2 he kicks ass on the sax doing an ass kicking total wave of a sax solo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wWustzfixb0.html

The bass line and the band is killing it throughout this tune. Then comes the drum fill by Will Kennedy that creeps up between 2:15 - 2:19 minutes. This gives me CHILLS when I hear the toms from high to low!! I've listened to this drum break over and over before the tune kicks back in. To close it out, the vocal solo overlay starting at 4 minutes (Yah...Yah-Dah, Dah-Yah, Dah...)... I absolutely love this tune! This is my favorite jazz fusion group!!!

@guide-tofinoseakayaking7856

3 on 4. A bar of 3/4 = a bar of 4/4. The very beginning gives it away, they actually split it so the 3 is on one side and the 4 is on the other side. Each player could play it in 3, or 4, or mix it up. Welcome to the wonderful world of polyrhythms!
@indrogianicolo899
@indrogianicolo899 7 лет назад
Ehi thanks a lot man! If I can profit from your knowledge, how do they think about it? Do they internalize the superposition of the two rythms or can hear them separately in their head? :O And if I can ask, can you explain on what time signature they play on Wildlife from the same album? (I'm interested particularly in the break starting from 2:29). Thanks again! :)
@EIStudent
@EIStudent 6 лет назад
Indro Gianicolo Its 6/8 bro. Starting from the down beat of the kick start counting 6 8th notes. The drummer does a masterful job on the groove.
@guide-tofinoseakayaking7856
@guide-tofinoseakayaking7856 6 лет назад
Indro, that's a great question "how they think about it". When a musician is totally new to a rhythm he/she may find that trying to just lock in on 1 thing is hard enough, ie "you play 3, and I'll play 4, and I'll try not to listen to your 3", but when they get comfortable with it they can think in 3, or 4, switch back and forth seamlessly, and ultimately think 3 on 4, or 4 on 3. Clearly these guys aren't new to it! You can clearly hear the drummer playing with the superimposition. Wildlife is an interesting one, at first I thought the beginning was in 7/4, but on closer listening I think it's 7/8 with 2 bar phrases. Sometimes with complex rhythms there's more than one way to count/write it, and I may listen to it again after more sleep and interpret it differently. I think ElStudent is close about the middle section, but I would interpret it as 12/8, which is like 4/4 divided into triplets (ONE two three, Two two three, THREE two three, FOUR two three). At 3:30 Jimmy is beating out the 4 on his bass. I also want to have another listen when I'm less tired, because I think the keyboard riff that plays throughout this section is doing something a little more interesting. It does switch back to 7 for the end section, though. Often an odd meter song will switch to an even one for the solo to make it easier to groove on the solo (Pink Floyd's "Money" for example), not that these guys needed to do that. This is a fun exercise, I haven't thought about these things for decades.

Guide - Tofino Sea Kayaking Man, mine was a good question but yours isa great answer! Thank you! I will try to pinpoint all your observations. Please share any new insights into thes beautiful works. Thanks to Elstudent too! (Can you suggest a resource to learn even and odd meters and polirythms? Videos on yt for exsmple?)
