Yemen's Cinderella Story

Should Yemen get past the Group Stage, of the Asian Cup 2019, it would be a miracle, certainly greater than the 2007 Asian Cup victory by Iraq, when the country was also at war. But, as in 2007, football can provide moments of hope and unity which very few things can. God knows Yemen needs it.

This channel has really grown recently into something much more than one which just focuses on football tactical analysis and it's great to see. Bringing some very unknown political situations to light with fantastically researched videos and seamlessly linking them to football, I can see huge things for this channel. Well done lads, you've created something to be really proud of.

i am Iranian and i just watched my country hammer Yemen in Asian cup. i was a little sad when i was watching the game, even though Iran's win was enjoyable, i could see how the players cared and fought as best as they can. i hope they get better results in the next two games. most of the People of Iran do not support the government meddling in foreign soil like Yemen, it would only make matters worse in countries like Yemen and Syria, but as always the governments of the world think only about their own selfish interests and not the people who supposedly chose them.

I was at the stadium in Qatar where Yemen beat Nepal last year. Was kind of cool because the stadium was pretty packed with all the Nepalese we have living here. However, their qualification was guaranteed before that game as Phillipines win over Tajikistan hours before had qualified Yemen.

There is another Cinderella story that I wish you would make a video on. You’ve made Iraq Yemen and Thailand, covering Asian football before. This doesn’t get much attention because afc doesn’t make news in football anyways and it’s an under 23 tournament. But I would like to bring you: vietnams run at the 2018 afc u23 championship. It could be made into a MOVIE. Many people won’t even know Vietnam plays football because they’ve never really been on the footballing map, not even in asia. A completely irrelevant team that can’t even play in the Asian cup tournament except for being the cohost in this very 2007 tournament. Until..now. They are a rising dark horse in asia. A golden generation. Qualified for the final World Cup qualifying round this year. And it all started in 2018, one of the greatest underdog stories in football. Vietnamese football struggled, the senior and u23 failed, lost, failure after failure after failure even among their own southeast Asian region, which itself is very generally irrelevant in the Asian continent. Meanwhile the national team struggled ….some youth players came through academy ranks to the youth national teams.. playing for vietnam in the 2016 AFC u19 championship….Vietnam shockingly reached the semi finals. Made history to qualify for their first World Cup at any age rage. The u20 national team gained 1 point in the 2017 u20 World Cup, great experience. But this wouldn’t be the real shock or story. With the u19 rising success, at the same time, the u23 team was battered by Thailand 3-0 in 2017 seagames, eliminated in the group stage. This was only an under 23 southeast Asian tournament. Coach resigned. Fans began to stop watching viet football. Disappointment after disappointment. Expectation was low. Vietnam would never dare dream of asia. They struggle in their own region. Then came the hiring of park hang seo. Met with skepticism for his poor k league manager record. Little did everyone know. He would become the greatest manager in Vietnamese history within a year. A Few months after seagames, Vietnam u3ds played in a friendly tournament also a few months before the u23 afc championship. Facing Thailand again, with park, the rematch was 2-1 in favor of Vietnam. In that same tournament. They would play Uzbekistan. Coincidentally…foreshadowing the final of the real tournament….a few months later. (Some of the details like this, are just too perfect to not be made into a movie.) One thing I forgot to add. Vietnam was in a group with South Korea and Australia. It was a death group for them. And a death group in AFC terms. (Both these teams are the usual AFC World Cup participants.) Another perfect underdog movie moment. Vietnam was in the hardest group of the tournament. What was their expectation? To get demolished. The goal for manager park hang seo? Hopefully get 1 point, maybe against syria. And they began the campaign with a 2-1 loss to South Korea. Better performance than expected. Still not making it out the group..and yet.. The next match against Australia was a shocking 1-0 win for Vietnam. A draw against syria would bring them into the knockouts. They did just that. 0-0 hard defending draw against syria. Many viet fans began to start watching the tournament….but no way Vietnam wins in the quarterfinals right? Facing Iraq, somehow Vietnam escaped to extra time 1-1. One of the most thrilling match of the tournament, both traded extra time goals, at 2-2, vietnam scored again and went up 3-2. Nobody could believe what was happening. But then Iraq scored again to tie. Penalties. Vietnam would win. Advancing to the semi finals. Viet fans celebrated in disbelief, all of a sudden…the entire country would stop and tune into the tournament. The semi final against Qatar. Tied at 1-1….minutes away from 90, Qatar struck. 2-1. It’s over isn’t it? Somehow the Vietnamese players showed resilience and Nguyen quang hai equalized just minutes later, his 2nd goal of the match. Unbelievable. Extra time again. The entire country held their breaths as Vietnam held on for another penalty shootout. Vietnam would win. Adancing to Their first final in the history of Vietnamese football at any AFC tournament. The whole country exploded. Partying in the streets and waving flags. You can search this up on RU-vid, it was like they had won the World Cup. In the final, against Uzbekistan..months ago they played in a friendly and lost. This time..the match was a blizzard. The field was entirely white. Why the afc let this match play is a mystery. But for some of the players, this was the very first time they had ever seen snow….and they played against a country who has and is used to snow and cold weather…(again some of these details are just too perfect for a movie) The whole country of Vietnam paused to watch this match…watch parties all over, even in the 40000 capacity national stadium was a gaint screen… Uzbekistan scored early. With halftime approaching, Vietnam awarded a free kick. Nguyen quang hai took the spot. And converted. Nicknamed the “rainbow in the snow” the whole country erupted. (There’s a very emotional image of the players falling and celebrating in the snow after the goal. (If this is made into a movie it would be a great cover lol) Vietnam held onto extra time. Holding on for another 119 minutes..close to another penalty shootout once again..the entire country held their breath as the previous matches might repeat again..Vietnam wins in a penalty shootout! No. Uzbekistan struck. In the very last minute of extra time. Shock. As the snow fell down and down..the players collapsed to their knees. The whole country cried. The players cried. Vietnam had lost, so close to perfecting the miracle Cinderella story. (But perhaps the fact that they lost in the last minutes in a damn blizzard once again the details are just so perfect for a movie!) It didn’t matter to fans, they still partied and wave the national flag, singing and shouting patriotic songs. (Search this on RU-vid!!) When the Vietnamese players returned. They were treated like heroes. Heading on a bus, driving across a bridge, thousands of fans followed the bus behind. It was like a World Cup parade. The whole country was behind the team. Faith restored in Vietnamese football. Hope was back. A hope for a golden generation. Future was bright. They might have lost. But it’s like they won. (This would be such a good ending scene!) I would LOVE for this to be a movie. A story of resilience and perseverance, and beating the odds. And I would love for you to make a video on this too.

The UK government is complicit in the tragedy in Yemen. Maybe not to the extent of the US government, but we follow their lead in destroying countries who have elements with (sometimes just tangential) ties to nations who contradict American geopolitical interests. If any plausible link to Iran can be made (sometimes even this dubious threshold is not met) this is treated as carte blanche to cause as much "collateral damage" as is deemed "necessary". In this case, the lives of millions of innocent Yemenis are destroyed in the process. This is not to defend the government of Iran or Houthi rebels or anyone else for that matter; merely to say that western governments (including the one which supposedly represents me) greatly exacerbate humanitarian crises if it means maintaining relationships with (in this case) the murderous authoritarian royal family of Saudi Arabia.

He showed me his papers which looked official, and said he needed to take a train to go to a refugee centre. I gave him all I had on me in cash, which was not much.
