Yes I am a woman and I hike solo all over the world. I had planned to hike to Clingmans Dome in the Smoky Mountains National Park, but a winter road closure had me changing plans and finding some new trails in Appalachia.

I live in Nashville and head to Gatlinburg as often as possible with my little dog and my camera gear. I'm actually looking for a "second home" out there to mostly rent for now and move to someday when I retire. Maybe sooner? I love it out there so much. Thanks so much for showing the trail you found when Clingman's was closed for ice. It's beautiful up at the top, btw, just exhausting to get up there-LOL. I've never been where you went and it looks like a wonderful way to spend a day. Thanks for sharing your adventures! This one put me in a relaxed state of mind, imagining myself out there. Keep doing what you do. You're awesome.

Interestingly, men always have positive things to say about my solo hiking but most women are critical and try to talk me out of it. My response is that I'm much safer in the woods than I would be walking through a Walmart parking lot!

@Red Fish I am careful about where I choose to hike alone. I don't hike in very remote areas without a companion. I solo only where there are other hikers around in case I get hurt. I do have ways to protect myself. Each of us has to decide what we are comfortable doing and take appropriate steps to make ourselves as safe as possible.

I've been on a quest since 2020 to explore more hikes around Southern California. At least half of my hikes (75 distinct trails to date) have been solo and I love it! I make different decisions when I'm alone on a trail - I'm more alert, more focused, and freer in body and spirit. I get similar comments with friends and family telling me to not hike alone or wondering if I'm afraid because I'm a woman. I remind those people that with the proper preparation and some pre-planning there isn't anything to fear. The world opens up when you are courageous enough to meet it head on.

You are such an inspiration! We are an all-female team of equestrian vaulters in NC. Plus we ride our horses way out in the woods to keep them in shape. Watching your videos and hearing the things you say helps us so much. You remind us of our coach, Dusti, who is the current national vaulting champion. Thank you for being amazing!

This is amazing. I’ve been getting back into solo hiking after overcoming some emotional trauma and it’s so liberating and empowering. Last one I did I almost turned around because I was having so much anxiety but I pushed myself and felt great that I actually finished. I have almost all the backpacking gear I need now and plan on doing atleast a couple solo overnights! And I may be going out west by myself.

Amanda. You are amazing. Great job. I’ve done two solo overnights so far myself. It’s hard to get over our own minds sometimes I’ve certainly been there too but you just can’t let her brain go to that scared place. Every hike, every moment we are alone we grow stronger. Kick it up :)

You’ll be fine just be aware of where you are, stay on course, remind yourself why you are doing this. You will persevere with discipline, determination, vision, understanding, self worth etc. It is amazing how it molds us into a stronger wiser individual. You will see life differently after accomplishing these solo hikes. Wow, it changed my life in so many ways. I found that being around people was not my thing because too many people feel the need to talk and I cannot hear Nature. Solo hiking is therapeutic and it instills courage to keep going and to never give up or surrender.

There’s a unique kind of pain that pierces the soul when you tell someone excitedly that you want to travel here or hike there and you get a fear response. I realize it’s their own fear projected on to me though and that helps put it into perspective. Fear limits us but wisdom is full of treasures. Life is meant to be lived!

I was hiking with a friend of mine (both of us guys) and ran into a woman solo hiking above the tree line in the Bridger Wilderness part of the Wind River Range in Wyoming. She let us know that there were some storms rolling in where we were going (we hit them the next day), asked about the trail up ahead where we had come down from, and went on her way. She seemed like a total boss.

Frankly I think it great seeing more and more women of all ages getting out on their own hiking doing the van life thing, living off grid, and so on and so forth. The more women do this the more it will be viewed as common. I certainly enjoyed running into women out and about on their own during my own travels - alone too. I mean, it is nice seeing more than old men doing this. We live in a beautiful country and so few actually ever get out to see it. Good on both the men and women who do so. Keep at it Alice and enjoy!

Thanks for sharing Alice. The love of the outdoors has no gender. Hiking solo is the most rewarding experience people can do for themselves. The outdoors is a test of endurance, learning to be compatible with nature and to experience the elements. It's never been a safe place but one can learn how to be part of it, to be in tune with their surroundings and the wildlife watching us. It is always safer to have company while out there, having someone to talk to or to depend on in case something happens. I am a hardcore backpacker, I have spend many days alone, on a trail, I have crossed path with women hiking solo for the pleasure of being away from people. Everyone learns their safety level.

Thank you for sharing your adventures with us, and just as importantly sharing your rationale for hiking solo. I also hike the trails near my home, with just my dog for company, but wear a bell since bears and other wildlife call this their home as well. Being by oneself in nature is a totally different experience. It becomes a relationship between you and the world, without the distraction of social interactions (which are wonderful, but at different times & places). I think much of the concern about females traveling alone is about potential vulnerability from malicious persons, not the wilderness itself. If one is strong, observant, and as well-prepared as you are, especially with cell-service for emergencies, it is absolutely the best way to experience nature. Thank you and please carry on!

You had me at "I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro." I huffed and puffed up Bear Mountain in Connecticut (but don't tell anyone!). I loved the views from the misty summit. You have a deep inner sense of what is truly meaningful and you tell a good story, which reflects your inner strength. My older daughter is like you. She takes on challenges with a courage that comes straight from a heart that has been touched by God. She is becoming a missionary and always moves forward, even when things don't work out or she is unsure or afraid. She loves people and spends her life in their service, all the while growing into a more beautiful young woman day by day. Your videos have character and your use of visuals, music, and commentary really take the viewer along. I think a little reflective narration would be cool too. Your stories raise people to a higher level (which is the purpose of all good stories). Great job, as always!

A young lady with a taste for adventure. Good for you, Alice! I have hiked and cycled all my life and have encouraged young people to do the same by taking them out on expeditions into the countryside. Fortunately here in Ireland we don't have bears or snakes to worry about.

Way late on stumbling across this video, but as a serious hiker and a single dad of two young women, wanted to say thanks for the message. You nailed it and this is how I tried to raise my girls over the majority of their life . But you said is so much better than I've struggled saying it over the years. I've already shared this with them.

I just randomly found your page and this video. I have a 12-year-old daughter, she is my only kid and is the apple of my eye. I must admit I'm very protective but this video opened my eyes to what she will miss if I'm too protective. Your father is a wise man and I appreciate you sharing his advice. I'm new to hiking and want to get my daughter to go with me, but at some point when she is older, even though I will worry and worry, I will encourage her to follow your father's advice. Many thanks!!

Thanks for sharing that. It’s never easy to let someone you love take risks, we all want to be there if we think someone might fall, but people need the opportunity to see if they can catch themselves first. I’m sure your daughter will turn into a wonderful and strong woman. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment

I hike solo also. Being by yourself in nature is one of the e greatest gifts I could give to myself. So many reasons why I do it as well, but I am stronger mentally and physically because of it. Thank you for your video!

I hike Solo too, love it. So much to absorb when hiking Solo and for me my senses are far more in tune than hiking with others. You can hear so much its as if you have headphones on with nature playing. As long as we are not careless and make wise decisions, we'll be fine. It would be kind of nice to have a Hikers Guild just for solo hikers who can share their stories of their personal experiences.

Hardly a rant but just good food for thought. I'm older (78), went to Thailand when my wife died and hike in the mountains and rice paddies where the school I volunteer teach is located. Always solo. Having had a binary pulmonary emboli when hiking in the Sierras which put me on a blood thinner I wouldn't think of hiking without a guide and am so thankful that they were available on my 3 treks in the Himalayas, 2 treks in Yunnan Province, China and two treks in Taiwan. But more importantly for me is the history and cultural lessons they share with me. But I love my long solo training hikes. That when the world seems to be at peace. Thanks Alice. I just discovered you today. Can't wait to view your Kilimajaro video.

Great monologue Alice. Thank you so much for sharing your insight and reasons why you hike solo. I hike alone as well. My friends told me that I should let someone know when I'm out. Actually, I feel exhilarated and alive hiking solo. It focuses your preparedness, actions on the trail and enhances the value of a hike when you're done. This act can bring you back to your essence magnifying each moment of the journey while building stronger memories.

Time alone in the woods is a "sanity pause" from the "real world". Any person going into the woods alone is taking an increased risk over having a buddy with them. In Boy Scouts and the Army we always "buddied up" for increased safety. I have times when I like being alone in the woods but, I carry a good survival kit and 50+ years experience camping and hiking. Carry a good kit. Good Luck, Rick

Thank you for sharing. I love hiking, but I am a beginner and learning a lot. For the longest time I never realized that I was afraid to hike alone. The main reason was that I was afraid of getting lost. So I learned how to read maps, a compass, the terrain, mark trails, etc. You are right on point about questioning why you are afraid. I'm more confident now and have started taking small 2-4 mile hikes alone. I just subscribed to your channel. Keep the videos coming! Stay safe out there.

@@AliceFordAdventures Thank you. Educating oneself is so very important. GPS technology is great, but we shouldn’t be dependent on it. We need to learn how to do things on our own as you said in your video. I'm a firm believer in that ideology. It makes us stronger and more confident as you had communicated, then we no longer feel afraid. Learn what we are capable of, because we do have a tendency to think we are less than what we truly are in only our minds. Looking forward to watching some prep videos. 😀

I too love hiking alone. I'm in Asheville and there are so many places around here to hike and be in nature. Because of stereotypes, women are more likely to get questioned about solo hiking, but it sometimes happens with men too. People conjure up the worst possible scenarios. What about bears? Wolves? Snakes? Getting lost? Etc? Or, that time I went to the movies and someone asked, "you're here by yourself?" Why, yes I am! Thanks for the video.

Lots of men would feel very vulnerable hiking alone in the wilderness. You're highly skilled so you feel safe. The "personal battle" and reflection from solo hikes is fun so I understand why you do it.

you keep doing what your doing, the only scary moments i've had in 40+ years of always hiking , biking alone are bad calls on winter terrain, and an occasional mother bear with cubs, and mountain lions. rarely run across people going where i go, but when i do run across people, their doing the same thing. not looking for trouble.

Worth mentioning...The Garmin InReach (clearly visible on the front strap of your backpack) is a game changer for going solo in terrain that is remote and/or has objective dangers.

Hello Alice! This video of yours is my first & I am appreciating your outlook, reminding me of my older sister who hikes solo. Although I like Abbie Barnes, soloing in the UK, I yearned for local women to inspire me. My RU-vid search was: "hiking tours by a woman in Virginia" [my home State]. I found several, I chose you first. Thank you for your explanation of why you hike Solo to encourage girls & women! Happy Trails Alice....
