Yes I did that to my knife and here is why 

AEB-L is good steel....especially for ease of sharpening vs. other stainless steels.

Why flip your knife over so many times to measure 15 feet? Just lay 15 knives end to end. People may think I'm dumb, but I'm actually very intelligent.

Just use a laser engraver to put a nice scale on the top of the blade instead of the side. It will protect the scale instead of having it on the sides that will be scratched up. Laser engraver will easily put Roman numbers and notch marks.
