The easiest way to start is to look at something and recreate it on paper. It's actually easy if you simply look at the shapes and lines and do it. With time you'll catch on to all the little tips and tricks there is to it. Have fun!
i really needed to see this video cause I had absolutely no confidences in my artwork at all to everyone else I can draw to myself all I do is just messed up over and over again
I showed this video to my art class today, and they adored it. They asked to watch it a second time because they were giggling so much the first time. We live in South Carolina, so first, they loved your accent. Then after they got over that, they loved what you had to say. I always tell them that they are fabulous....but they like "brilliant" better. Great job in helping me install confidence in the children (and myself!). :-)
Really pleased the children enjoyed the video and my Yorkshire accent. Art is all about confidence, I hope your children produce great art. Cheers Paul
Good advice. Turning off our own inner critic (and others) and allowing for spontaneous creativity to flow is really creating art. It’s often called getting in the zone. Love your videos Paul . Thanks
You are very welcome. As Picasso once said, 'I spent a life time trying to paint like a child.' Meaning he wanted to paint with the lack of inhibition that young children display when drawing.
Sent this video to my painting buddy who’s feeling discouraged. Paul’s lighthearted approach somehow gets right to the heart-thank you for your videos!
Thank you so very much, Paul! Your inspiration keeps me drawing every single day. I always wanted to draw when I was young. Turning 57 soon, I finally got the time to do so. I am so thankful that I found you here. I followed your Learn to Draw Simple Objects and I am building my confidence day by day!! Everyone can draw, even ME😉Big THANK YOU 🙏 from Canada 🇨🇦
That ruler point reminded me of a story I heard when I was in China about 40 years ago. The story went that a famous Chinese painter once asked the spirit of Zhou EnLai(周恩来) in heaven to aid him to draw a line straight. When I heard the story, I was quite touched. Now that I know a little about drawing, I realize that he was not drawing a straight line. If he were, he could use a ruler rather than invoke Zhou's spirit to aid him. Great advice in this one and great tutorials in your videos in general. Anyone needs encouragement, I highly recommend you to read Emerson.
Thank you! In 2018, I started college at 53 years old. Next semester, I will take a drawing class, new to drawing. Thank you for encouraging us along our creative journey.
Can I say it!!! brilliant !, when I am drawing in public people always tell me they "can't" draw... Of course they can it takes practice and the desire to draw!, thank you so much!!
Really inspirational. I have been having a mental block about trying to draw as I am afraid of producing rubbish! Your video has given me confidence to really get going.
Thank you. I’m in my 60’s & only 4(ish) yrs ago faced this artist who has been clawing her way out. I have occasional confidence & this is a Huge boost- will be playing it back repeatedly- again- thank you!😂🎉
My late mother was an artist, and because I so much enjoyed watching her make images with various mediums, I also became an artist. I'm almost 68, draw mostly optical illusions (LOVE doing those!!) and abstract images, but I'm now learning to draw "realistically," because someone I love and respect very much has been encouraging me to go in that direction. I'll have to admit, however, I've never anthropomorphized a line as I used my trusty eraser---it is, after all, just a bit of graphite laid down on a sheet of paper (or whatever I find to hand to draw on) 😁. My favorite artists, their works, are Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss), and MC Escher, one for his extensive use of whimsy, the other for the impossible perspectives and the tessellations he drew.
You are talking about art, it totally changes my mind although i have no idea about art - i am a computer engineer. And yes , i will be the greatest artist end of the day :)
Very well said, and I can't wait to show your video to my junior high and high school students. They really struggle with judgmental inner voices and I am trying to help them stop the negative beat downs.
That's great, it's funny how all children/students go through this period of self doubt. For some, of course, it is a permanent state of mind, but if it is confronted sometimes it helps. I hope your students enjoy the video. Cheers Paul
Dear Paul I loved to draw as a child and always promised I would start up again one day. Now 51 just beginning again. Thank you for your inspirational videos. I was that child that used to draw with a ruler - I kid you not. My art teacher at school gradually weaned me off it. At the time it was a difficult habit to break but after a while it was ok - the world did not end. Thank you so much for the inspiration. John
That is wonderful, drawing is about personal expression, not about pleasing other people, perhaps you can share my channel with your friends. Thanks Paul
Hello Sir, Your exactly right. I LOVE to draw I started just last month of June. Maybe it's not too late I'm in my 40's now.I am thinking that I am not blessed because I tried and tried my sketches is out of I don't know what to say I feel discourage. I love to do sketches because it's give me comfort and releases my stress.
Hi Blessed has nothing to do with it. Picasso once said 'I spent a lifetime trying to draw like a 5 year old'. He didn't mean it literally, but watch a 5 year old draw, no inhibitions, doesn't necessarily look like what we might expect, yet never say they can't draw. They just do it. So think like a 5 year old, the process is more important than the outcome. Cheers Paul
+Blakkr The Serf Really glad the video helped. It's surprising how many people don't realise just how unique their own art is. Good luck worth your art work. Paul

Your videos are so uplifting, I love them all. Thank you. I draw daily with you and loving it. Although, I am guilty of erasing a sketching of one of my house plants. If I lived in beautiful England, I would sign up for lessons with you. However, you are an excellent video instructor! Cheers!
I was worried you weren't coming back, glad to see I was wrong Sir! Sidenote to drawing, but if you've not heard of ASMR might I suggest researching it? It's essentially the feeling of immense relaxation from another's voice, and yours is the type to do such a thing! Much like Bob Ross, you'd be a hit amongst the youtube art ASMR community here on RU-vid! Welcome back! Adam
Thank you sir. You are a wonderful teacher.amazing artist.and a terrific motivator. Was searching for lessons for my daughter. She just loves your lessons and follow and practice. Need your blessings. And I too bought set of pencils now😊
I'm glad your daughter find my videos interesting and I'm pleased you have bought some pencils too. You will be able to enjoy many wonderful hours drawing together. Cheers Paul
Drawing, like much else in life, is about confidence and self belief. Realise that you are a unique artist and believe in your own work, you won't go far wrong if you do.
