I’ve been a YES fan since ‘71 and I, for one, enjoyed this era of YES. One thing that always stood out to me how happy the late Chris Squire was during this time. You can easily see this if you [and I strongly recommend this for a reaction video] catch “Starship Trooper” from the 9012LIVE concert film. YES had “broken up” as the 80’s began and Chris Squire, Alan White & original YES keyboard man Tony Kaye formed a new band with guitarist Trevor Rabin. They were originally going to be called Cinema but when Jon Anderson signed on, staying with the YES brand was a no brainer. All the prog bands: YES, Genesis, Rush, Peter Gabriel changed their sound during the 80’s. They kinda had to. Recommended from this very album is “I’m Running” a strong tune indeed. And don’t forget to consider “Starship Trooper” from 9012LIVE. There a version “without animation”…choose that one if possible. Cheers!

Jon Anderson, Chris Squire and Tony Kaye were original members, Alan is consider from the Classic Line Up. Trevor Rabin was the new member, he wrote most of the music from the 80s and he is responsible for the survival of the band. Yes was done after Drama ( basically Squire, White and Howe with the Buggles (Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes)). 80s Yes gave the band a new life.

90125 and Big Generator are both well written and crafted 80s rock albums. I like both their 70s and their 80s output, and all you have to do to appreciate that is to stop expecting the old fashioned in what was (back then) cutting edge music.

My dear.....your musical pallet is rather weak.....you need more years of listening. Every band goes through changes....every band. You can't expect them to play the same songs forever .....the 70's Yes would not have been popular in the 80's......that's why bands change and evolve to begin with. You have to be able to roll with the changes.....pun totally intended.🤘😎

The album you guys were wondering about at the beginning was the Drama album, when Jon and Rick left and Yes hired The Buggles, who had the big hit "Video Killed the Radio Star," as their replacements. Then Steve left for Asia and the band basically broke up. Trevor Rabin got together with the remainder of Yes and formed the group Cinema. They had made most of the album, but something was missing. Trevor had a very good voice but not a great voice, so they asked Jon to come in and contribute to the album. Jon being Jon, he pretty much took over the whole thing, so they said, "Might as well call ourselves Yes," and they released the 90125 album, which gave the band their only Grammy Award, for Best Rock Instrumental, with the furiously powerful, though short, song, "Cinema," which is awesome! Love Will Find A Way is very good song from Yes's follow-up album Big Generator, but it is also one of the Rabin Years songs and is more Pop oriented, although there are some great songs on this album, so don't give up on it or 90125, Lex. It's a very different iteration of Yes, but they still produced some great songs. Then came the Union album, which many fans hated, though I liked it a lot, which combined the old and the new line-ups, before the classic lineup returned in the '90s, creating some of the band's best Prog music, like "Mind Drive" "That, That Is" and other wonderful music, before the Dark Days began, when Jon was out of the band for good, and the band only made a few songs afterwards that are even listenable, IMO, and those are off the last two albums. However, not long before Jon left the band, they recorded some of their very best live concerts, like at The House of Blues, their Symphonic Live concert, and others, which I think you will love. ❤✌

The album this song comes from is a masterpiece. I'm 65 and I grew up listening to early Yes. I know good music and this is good music. People can sit and squabble and split hairs all they want. It's real simple. If you like quality music, this is it. If this record had happened to fall flat, that would be one thing. But it didn't. How could you call it something else when Anderson's vocals are clearly recognized?

Come on Guys! Get over it! These guys have stayed alive in the transitional times after Prog. "Love Will Find a Way" is a song from their 1987 album Big Generator. It was released as the first single from that album, reaching number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in late 1987. It also topped the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart, HOLDING ONTO THE NUMBER ONE SPOT FOR THREE WEEKS. Yes guitarist and singer Trevor Rabin originally wrote the song for singer Stevie Nicks to perform; however, Yes drummer Alan White encouraged Rabin to let Yes record the song instead. "Love Will Find a Way" was the fifth of six Yes singles to crack the U.S. top 40; It has been featured on several of Yes' later compilations, including the box sets Yes years and In a Word

Trevor Rabin has stated that Big Generator was the most difficult record to record with him trying to pin Jon down and Jon being too much a free spirit. Jon actually left Yes after the Big Generator tour and reunited with Steve Howe, Bill Bruford and Rick Wakeman for the ABWH album in 1989.
@joelliebler5690

Rabin: "You need to consider how Jon came into the band during 90125. It wasn’t like all of us went into the studio, wrote some songs and recorded them. 90125 was a very peculiar kind of creation. When it was time to do Big Generator, suddenly we have these five guys, along with Trevor Horn, who had to figure out how to work together as a band. I think that led to some pulling and pushing. But then I listen to “Shoot High, Aim Low,” “I’m Running” and even “Rhythm of Love” and think it’s all worth it."

I absolutely love ALL of Yes' music and in my opinion there were several albums that, largely because of member changes, went outside of the Yes 'box', however I personally never thought of these projects as not being Yes, but as being another approach to the creativity and ability to incorporate new ideas into their music and to their ability to allow new and different members to share their musicality and to truly be members for those projects. I remember when I heard this the first time, it made me listen differently and really appreciate how they embraced the technology changes and genre movements of the time.

Big Generator Almost Like Love Final Eyes I’m Running are my favorites from this album. After this Yes broke up and in 1989 Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe form a new band (and Chris Squire was invited but he not only refused but sued them and won to keep them from using the Yes brand) so they hired Tony Levin to play bass. I think it’s a great one and done album and very proggy in places. Because of the lawsuit they called the shows An Evening of Yes Music Plus. The dvd has Jeff Berlin on bass because Tony got food poisoning from eating bad Mussels.

I love the classic Yes as much as anybody, my first show was Yessongs. But with a band as dynamic as Yes I think it's best to embrace the changes. When we first saw Patrick Moraz it was hard to get used to but the Relayer years were an exciting period for them. Then Trevor Rabin's presence brought a more pop feel to the Yes sound, but what a great talent he was for them. Rabin Incorporated a 5.1 surround sound to the Talk tour which was fantastic. I get it, some bands do sell out but I think Yes did a good job to adapt to the times while still keeping their essence and integrity. ✌️😎

Yeah, that's just disassociated and stupid... But I believe Trevor coming on re-energized the band . . . and they are still with us. And look, they went back to their "original" sound and it doesn't sound very good :(. They need Jon (who still has that power), but Squire's unique playing and tone are gone, and Howe the last original (and Geoff from "Drama") . . . there are _pieces_ missing from the puzzle that made them what they were in the past era's. Rush, Yes, Saga, Kansas, Genesis, King Crimson and even ELP survived the 80's.
@andrito1000
@andrito1000 Месяц назад
"This is not what I signed up for", is precisely what most Yes fans felt in the 1980's. The progressive nature of the band was co-opted by the production during 90125, with Treveor Horn. Amazing given that Horn was involved with Yes's previous album "Drama" in 1980. After Drama Squire and White were left standing on their own with the depature of Howe and Downes for "Asia" with John Wetton and Carl Palmer. Squire and White had worked briefly with Jimmy Page after Led Zeppelin's end on a project tentatively called "XYZ", (ex Yes/Zeppelin), but it was quickly dropped and all tapes abandoned. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard a tape from that project. So, Trevor Horn produced Yes's "90125" and brought Anderson back in to help sell the band with the brand "Yes". Up till Anderson's introduction Rabin was vocalist. Kaye was brought in and left, replaced by Eddie Jobson who has gone on to say that Kaye never played a note on "90125", that it was all Rabin. Kaye was brought in , again to secure the name of "Yes" to be used as a comeback. The "Big Generator" sessions were held in 85 and didnt really finish till 87. Squire said "the bass and drum parts were completed about 21 months before it's release". The production was anything but straightforward. Anderson and Rabin did NOT get along. Anderson's vocal parts for "Love Will Find A Way" were almost non existent and Rabin's parts were up front. Taking over lead. The album "Big Generator" is to me, not a great moment in Yes history. As was the later "Union" album in 91. The record label pulling the band in pop oriented directions. The song itself works alright, cause it is bubblegum. You chew it for awhile, it tastes good then you spit it out. This album was the last straw for Anderson who left after the tour, and formed "ABWH", Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe. Anderson did not want to be tied down with pop and went back to the progressive roots of Yes. ABWH's first album is great. Highly recommended, with Tony Levin from King Crimson on stick and bass. But, on the whole, I'm not a fan at all of "Big Generator". "Final Eyes" and "holy lamb" stand out, but the rest of the album is so middle of the road, I cant play it. And I'm a hardcore Yes fanatic!

Welcome to the '80s. 😉 Honestly, EVERY prog band adopted a more pop-oriented approach in the '80s. Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and even Pink Floyd --- ALL of them experimented with a more approachable, "mainstream" sound at the time. It's still great music, and the proggish elements are still there if you're an attentive listener. This song was the first single released from Big Generator, precisely because it's radio-friendly. Try "I'm Running" off the same album if you want something that sounds a bit more like the classic sound.

I'm Running would be great for a reaction.This is a great Yes album and they were still filling auditoriums in the 80s. And btw, Drama is an excellent album.

90125 was 1983. PLEASE look at these albums in the context of the time they were released. I was born in 1970 and led asheltered childhood (musically), so I had no idea who Y.E.S. were before 90125. When that album came out, it was a revelation, especially compared to the new wave stuff dominating the airwaves. That album opened my eyes. And caused me to look into their back catalog, and that changed my life. These albums are dominated by Trevor Raven‘s 80s soaked pop stylings, but they were still a far cry beyond Duran Duran in Madonna. And I don’t believe that they “lost” fans - I understand some of the old guard didn’t go forward with them on this journey, but it sure didn’t stop them from listening to the classic stuff. I do wish these albums were better, but I think they serve a valuable purpose.

I'm as passionate about purely prog Yes as anyone, but I also appreciated both "90125" and "Big Generator". In fact, more so than the smarmier "Follow You, Follow Me" Genesis output compared to their legendary prog works...

Scott from The Prog Corner on Big Generator: "Had that thing, even in its present state, come out 12 months after 90125 it would have conquered the world... I think it sold like 2 million copies. So, it did alright commercially, but it could've done amazingly great. Yes should have been the band of the eighties if you think about it. They had the sound of the eighties; the blueprint was right there with 90125."

This is about as 'chart-friendly' as Yes got. The title track from the album Big Generator has really heavy sections, while the longer track I'm Running is more proggy with an unusual time signature in its main theme. The subsequent Talk and Union albums had a more prog feel overall, but still had elements of more mainstream rock in them.

@RushTrader

Trevor Rabin initially had Stevie Nicks in mind for this song but she passed on it. Also, the 80s lineup wasn't supposed to be called YES but it became that after Jon Anderson came into the fold and management got involved. It was much easier to sell YES than a band with another name. Howe wasn't too happy that YES went on without him and Rabin wasn't too happy being compared to Howe because it was never his intention to join YES and carry on their traditions. In the past, YES were a collective songwriting team. However, with Rabin, he'd show up with full demos and Anderson found it increasingly frustrating to get his ideas across as Big Generator was a struggle and took years to make. All that being said, if YES hadn't been revived in the 80s in this way, who knows what would have ever happened with them. Nice reaction guys!

Oh my goodness, Lex is a TRUE Yes fan! LOL!!! Hey Lex, many of us felt the same way about the Trevor Rabin (Yes West) era. However, Rabin did inject new life into the band with their first number one hit ever, Owner Of A Lonely Heart. The band was originally going to be named Cinema and consisted of Chris, Alan and Tony Kay. They actually did try Jimmy Page and was going to rename the band XYZ, (Ex Yes, Zeppelin) but it didn't work out. They then found Trevor Rabin who brought his brand of playing and material to the band and then invited Jon back, who shared vocals with Trevor. The record company loved the hit potential of the material on the album 90125, and with the inclusion of Jon, pushed for them to name the band YES. The album Big Generator was a difficult one to make for the band and not one of their best efforts IMO. Jon and Trevor had artistic differences which delayed the release of the album for two long years. However, I do think the final Trevor album, TALK, is a good one and highly underrated. Indeed, Lex is a TRUE YES FAN! 😀 By the way, I think you're really going to love Jon and The Band Geeks show! You might want to check out a video of them playing Perpetual Change I recorded here in Boston, on my channel. Pammy

Without 80s YES, we wouldn’t have YES now. Prog was so out of fashion most bands went pop like Genesis. And since YES was no longer we were just happy to have a YES. Listen to the rest of 90125, there are prog elements and time signature changes etc…. Trevor Rabin went on to a renowned soundtrack composer career. Don’t give up on the version of YES lots of great music on these albums

Nick and Lex - my dear friends. I have always been most positive about the music reactions you publish. I love Yes as much as Alexia does. I had a dear friend introduce me to Yes in the late 70's. Awaken, Close To the Edge, Revealing Science. Wasn't much I didn't like. And then, Love Will Find A Way came out. It started with strings and it was grand. Then, ugghhh, the lyric "I Eat At Chez Nous" was sung. I have never been able to get past that lyric. Post Trevor Rabin Yes is good. YesStudio, Magnification, The Ladder - all worth listening to and loving. Everything with the Yes moniker is worth listening to, but maybe not loving. "I eat at Chez Nouz". UGGHHH! Thanks for the fun reaction, Your Friend, Ken

By the time this came, it was 9 years since 70s Yes had released an album. They had evolved to the Big Generator album and with membership changes over 3 albums. Other tracks on this album (I'm Running, Shoot High Aim Low, Final Eyes) are more typical of 80s prog than this one which was obviously a single. Remember 70s prog was dead by this point (1987) and so this was typical of the times. It was the next album by ABWH that brought some elements of 70s prog back.

Being a kid in the 70's and a teenager in the 80's I grew up liking all kinds of music and though as a teenager I revolted away from the hairband rock and delved more into "classic rock" which was essentially 60's and 70's rock. Oddly Genesis and Yes were played on the pop stations vs. their earlier Prog stuff so it was the reverse effect for me. I knew them as pop rock and had to learn of the other stuff later when I became a Peter Gabriel fan. Rush and Pink Floyd were played more on the classic rock station so I knew more of their progression and was a fan even in grade school.

So, yeah. That happened. I was a huge Yes fan in the 70s. Saw them in 1977 and 1978, but I dropped off at Tormato. After that I was in and out with them. They kind of lost their direction creatively, bouncing back and forth from prog to pop rock, and back to prog, but they were never the same. Saw them in 2004 and they were great, but then Jon left and later Chris died, and now they are a skeleton that plays like Steve Howe and four other guys.

Well I saw the concert for this tour and bought the album and played it a lot. It’s difficult to express the disappointment of 1980 when the Paris recordings fell apart and Jon and Rick left. Drama, Asia and Jon’s solo stuff were keeping me fed. Owner was so popular and had randoms singing cuts from the album in our hockey locker room who wouldn’t know anything beyond Roundabout if that… It was a treat to hear Yes on the radio and see them filling stadiums so that I was willing to overlook the lack of progressive qualities. Big Generator was a product of the times and led to more stadium concerts so again I was willing to overlook this as in concert I could hear All Good People etc and hang out with my heroes. It may be jarringly poppy but I was starved for Yes in concert so… I coped.

Jon felt under used and got together with Rick, Bill and Steve and the recorded Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe. It's a pretty interesting record. @richarddobson815
@richarddobson815 Месяц назад
OK Alexia, you want a comment? I'll give you a comment! Only joking... sorry! The music is much more streamlined and straightforward than before for sure, but please consider the following and put yourself in our shoes back in the 80's. Here goes... Drama had come out in 1981 with Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (from Buggles) replacing Jon and Rick, and it was surprisingly good considering Trevor was not the singer Jon was. But then that line-up crashed and burned and there was likely never going to be another Yes album EVER! But Chris and Alan wanted to play music and they got back together with Tony Kaye from original line-up pre Rick. They called the band Cinema and had some ideas when Chris was introduced to Trevor (Ray-bin) who also had new music to play. They got on well and '90125' started to gel when Jon was asked whether he'd like to contribute some vocals. Jon and Trevor liked each other and once Jon started singing people asked the obvious question 'why not call the band Yes?' as Chris had the rights to the name. So the album came out, 'Owner..' was a big hit and the album still had lots of prog bits amongst the 80's sheen of Trevor Horn's production. You have to listen to this album whole in one sitting (like on Patreon) to get the right feel. Many of us Yes fans were ecstatic as we thought Yes was dead, and times change as musicians get older and move on. So quite a few old fans like me bought the album, and many new fans were made and the album was a big hit. A couple of years went by and the record company started getting impatient. Where's the follow up album? 'Love Will Find A Way' is one of the singles off that follow up album Big Generator, and it does suffer a little from second album syndrome (it is pretty much a new band's second album) in that there's pressure to write another 'Owner...' while trying to keep everything fresh. Does it work? Maybe this song is more basic but there's a lot of interesting original stuff on Big Generator including a classic in 'Shoot High Aim Low'. Again it's better to hear the whole album than form an opinion from one song. After this album the dreaded 1989 Union album (and tour) happened where this line up plus Steve, Rick and even Bill Bruford were herded together for a project that, on record at least, didn't work. The 90125 and Big Generator line up made one final album in 1995 called Talk, and it was very good. The final track 'Endless Dream' is a 3 part, 14 minute epic that stands up with anything in the Yes canon. Alexia, I understand completely where you're coming from, and the music is different. I just think that perhaps, if you had been living in our universe at that time, being the huge Yes fan that you are, your perspective might have been a little different. I ask you to do just one thing... please react to '90125' in full. Love you both... what a channel.
