Totally agree with Kevin. As a Catholic mother, I recognise my example to my daughters is so important. I wear leggings etc. underneath for modesty and practicality .
I stopped wearing trousers (pants) back in 2021 when I became Catholic, and could never go back to them. I find long skirts & dresses not only feminine, but practical too. Strangely, I’ve also found people in general are more respectful to women who are modestly dressed.
What kind of shoes do you wear with skirts? And do you, indeed, have to wear stockings? Surely you can't wear runners like you can with bluejeans. Do you wear loafers, or granny shoes or high-heels? I always found it problematic when I wore a skirt.
@butterflybeatles for me, it depends on the occasion: i wear sandals (fancy or flip flops), flats, heels, little sneakers, chunky sneakers, gardening crocs for farm chores, ankle boots, knee high boots,.... I imagine anything a normal woman would wear. Pinterest has lots of ideas for how to pair skirts and different kinds of shoes but now I just go with whatever looks nice and is comfortable.
@butterflybeatles oh and for me, I do not usually wear stockings. Like, i assume you mean panty hose type stockings. In the colder months i will wear leggings under my skirts. I usually have a half-slip on under my skirt, and sometimes I will wear tight biker shorts if I know I'll be outside in the heat and my thighs will be sticking together, lol.
I came into the church in 1996 and by 1997 was wearing only skirts and dresses which I never wore except for special occasions. I have not worn jeans since 1996. I noticed men were more respectful of women in dresses and skirts. God had always given me that sense of modesty even before I became Catholic. I was very uncomfortable in a low cut blouse and I always wore a one piece bathing suit. My girls see my example now and always ask if a shirt is appropriate (see through or getting too tight) and if their skirt is getting too short and we should throw it out. We are always on top of it and make sure to keep up with their growth spurts.😄
@butterflybeatles that argument is such an over kill, tbh. Back 100 years ago, usually, women AND men wore hats out in public. The church says we women cover our heads out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament in the church. There is nothing stopping you from wearing a hat or hair covering when you go to the grocery store, if you so feel the need. But you are very adamantly pushing the hijab and head coverings to every comment that suggests wearing skirts is more Marylike, yet you are fighting with every excuse why you cannot wear a skirt and that jeans are the best invention on every other comment. So which one is it?
@@VMSNSRVBVILQMS1 It is inconsistent to promote the skirt as a testimony of being "Mary-like" without, at the same time, insisting that the hair be covered as was the case with the Virgin Mary. I think Hijab is extremely practical which is the same reason I like jeans. With hijab you can wear bluejeans under it so there is no inconsistency there. So we should promote hijab.
Kevin, your wife and I were in similar situations. I concluded, like she did, to make the change after having an excellent conversation with a priest in a confessional. He wonderfully and charitably answered my every objection to dresses (wind, specific daily duties, raising 6 boys and having to deal with varied duties in the male world), and thus I made the change to dresses/skirts and have NEVER regretted it. Wonderfully, my husband supported my decision! It's the Marylike and thus best choice. When necessary, I do as my confessor said and wear a pair of pants UNDER the skirt or dress.
Colleen Hammond also pointed out a big problem with women wearing pants, especially tight pants. Fact: our eyes follow lines. So when a women wears pants the lines on the inside lead right up to her...yeah, ahum...a man's imagination can easily do the rest if he does not resist the temptation.
This is where hijab comes in really handy. She can wear what she wants inside the house as there is no strange man with roving eyes. Then she just pops the hijab dress and scarf over top when she leaves the house.
@@butterflybeatles wearing the hijab or Veil is the best. I actually support daily veiling for women. But I must correct that the Woman cannot wear anything inside the home. The woman must be modest also in the house.

@butterflybeatles Thank you for this perspective, but I think the Catholic teaching is better because it allows you to show yourself only to your husband. Though there can be a more relaxed modesty at home but certainly only around immediate family and this too must be modest even though relaxed.
I agree with Eric but have nothing against women wearing skirts 24/7 if that's their choice. But to say wearing pants is a sin (people in the comments)? Even loose pants? In school for PE at our Catholic school we were allowed to wear pants and shorts because wearing our school skirts was actually more immodest and it was just practical. Most Catholic moms and girls I know wear pants and they are amazing Catholics! To say they are all in the wrong and are being masculine? I just don't agree. If women want to wear only skirts and dresses, great. If you don't, I believe there is a way to still be feminine and modest in Gods eyes. ✨✨✨Also I think it's important to be charitable and kind with this topic - it can really effect a girl who is trying and she can easily be discouraged when God inspires in small steps at times ❤
Ahhhh to skirt or not to skirt.... that is the question (and always a controversial one!) 🥰 I've been wearing skirts/dresses exclusively for 17 years. It wasn't easy at all to make the switch in the beginning, but I knew it pleased God and stuck with it and now love it. It's an external change that slowly changes our interior. 🤍🙏
Having worn skirts/dresses exclusively since I was eight and I am now 47, I can count two or three times when my skirt has ever blown up from the wind. Not as big an issue as many think
Aprons need to make more of a comeback. ☺️ we live on a cattle ranch and aprons are a regular part of my uniform. I have been strictly dress wearing for 7 years now? Also leggings under the dress are great for cold or the windy conditions. Choosing proper material is essential too. Linen in the summer and wool/tweed in the winter.
When it’s windy (or cold) I wear heavier dresses with leggings underneath for extra modesty on the off chance the wind blew the wrong way. But generally the dress should be long enough so that wouldn’t occur anyway IMHO
I've never worn pants in my life. I've always been athletic and active outdoors, and it's never once slowed me down. Pants are nearly always immodest and are always man's dress.

There were at least 3 Bishops with ordinary jurisdiction in the 1950s-ealy60s that said women wearing pants is a sin. As well as 1500+ years of Christendom of women wearing skirts and dresses. If Eric thinks of himself as a traditional Catholic, why not follow tradition?
What is the problem with women wearing slacks? Is it the temptation that men experience? I love this casual lifestyle as reflected in the clothing that we wear, now. Clothes are so much more comfortable than when we had to wear dresses (before the sexual revolution in the 1960s).
I work at a Catholic University and holy smokes....at this point I'd be happy if even pants was the prerequisite...half the time I'm working I'm having to put a significant amount of energy in just not looking back. As I've made an effort to put my lust in check it's really been strange for me to interact with your average young woman because if I'm not looking at them as a sex object I'm really struggling to find any reason at all to want to even be around them because the primary "virtue" to your average young woman seems to be to look sexy and they have nothing else to offer and our culture doesn't really encourage any other virtues. Maybe this has more to do with something in me and years of sin but the reality I'm facing is I have a tiny amount of women I'm even interested in talking to unless I want to fall into lustful thoughts.
I came to wear skirts on my own as well but more for secular reasons... Pants never fit me right and I got irritated with it. I still use pants for pajamas. Generally, I wear leggings or shorts under my skirts for added protection, especially from wind and such. I tried pants on recently and hated how they feel now! I realized I'm the few years I've been wearing skirts, I find skirts are more comfortable and practical for almost any job I have to do. Pants never fit my form and were impossible to get to be modest for me. My favorite skirt brand I buy on Amazon. They're fairly inexpensive with elastic waist bands on many styles that are comfortable no matter what life state I'm in. (in the $30 range) and very long (I'm tall!)with wonderful pockets! They sell Renaissance style garments for costume and such, but their skirts are lovely. Scarlet Darkness is the brand name of any women want to look. I just love them!
Cardinal Siri acknowledges, right out the gate, that fashionable men's trousers of the time period were more modest than modern women's skirts (as long as the pants were not too tight).....however, his concerns are of the higher order, namely feminine and motherly dignity, psychological effects, the order of Nature and Truth, and moral considerations beyond external modesty. It is well worth reading. My wife came to this pro position on wearing dresses/skirts and not pants independent of my opinion, though I've subsequently reinforced her position and required conformity from our daughters, who frankly disdain pants and shorts (except the very youngest who needs extra encouragement).
Why wear skirts for just mass? You are always in Gods presence and the presence of your fellow humans. No you don't have a problem with falling, this is just what you tell yourself to excuse your behavior.
@@davisfarm9 multiple bishops using moral theology said it is a sin. Are you an approved moral theologian? What seminary before Vatican 2 did you attend? If you are not then you have no authority to say it is not a sin when many bishops with ordinary jurisdiction say it is.
Women has always worn skirts for centuries, through wind, through war, through everything. I understand why this is a conversation because of our rotten society but women should always wear skirts
When I’m off work I wear dresses, when I’m at work I wear pants. I don’t work in an office, I’m a home care hospice nurse. You wouldn’t believe the substances the body expels after death. Not to mention how well can one perform post mortem care on a person (who is quite literally dead weight) in a dress?
@JacquesMigne you sound a little hostile, i don't think thats necessary. I imagine hospital nuns had men working for the hospital who would come lift dead bodies.

As a woman who has to cycle (usually in a high wind) to church... it would pretty inarguably be false modesty for me to wear a skirt to look more modest in church, when half the city had seen my thighs on the way there. To avoid this I have to cycle with only one hand, so the other can hold my skirt down. I've done it, but it's dangerous! So I go for culottes that look like a skirt when I'm standing.
I have worn skirts or dresses for 12-13 years, since i came back to the faith. I clean bathroom floors, do gardening work, shovel snow, chase 5 young kids around (and i have one due in October), walk dogs, i used to go running around the neighborhood - even during the winter months. If great grandma could do it, so can i. It hit me once that it would always remind me of our Blessed Mother, and after that i never wore pants. Well actually the only time i wear pants is when im going to the chiropractor. Beyond that, I'm pro skirt.
@madeleineglastonbury6755 one time I forgot to grab a pair of pants to go to the chiropractor, and I mentioned that I didn't have pants on under my skirt and they were very accommodating and respectful.
My skirts and dresses get stuck constantly even when I'm not doing chores. I could not imagine doing chores in skirts and not getting them stuck and dirty all the time.
@patricial.321 if you were 100% skirt all the time, you would find a way for it to work. What do you mean by, stuck? Like catching things? My skirts get just about as dirty as a pair of pants, I imagine, and I do laundry and wash them. I have nice skirts and dresses I would not clean a bathroom in, and I have chores and everyday skirts.
@@VMSNSRVBVILQMS1 they get stuck in all kinds of doors (fridge door, oven door, ...) and between my legs. Sometimes I step on them when going up stairs or stand up from squatting, almost flashing my underwear.
Eric was spot on! Especially agree with the fact that skirts/ dresses are not on the top of the list of what makes a woman feminine and I have no problem with wearing modest pants. This topic has been really blown out of proportion. Kevin and Eric did a great job discussing the topic though.
Pardon my many comments, I just believe this issue is so extremely important! And hopefully some of these thoughts might have tips for ladies who are having the goal of modest and feminine dress. So my bathing suit/swim dress is knee length, and so I wear knee length leggings under it in case it comes up in the water or when I'm climbing into a kayak etc.

I totally get how people can be put off by the extra effort it takes, but come on, are we called to heaven or not? Are we going to rest that by the time we get to our judgement day we can say to Our Lord, "I did just the bear minimum, I did only the comfortable things, but i was mostly modest," or can we say "yes I am a sinner, but I always tried to do the hard and difficult things for the love of God and Our Lady, to go the extra mile to find modest clothes to do activities that others were doing, or i did not do those activities." It is not always easy to find swim dresses especially, but it is possible, and God sees our efforts. And no modesty is not the only thing that God looks at when deciding the state of our soul. The rest of your spiritual life has to be just as, if not more, important as modesty. Your charity, your love of God, all the other virtues. Modesty is just one of them. I'm sorry for all my comments too lol but yes I feel very strongly about this because it pains me to see people who have absolutely every excuse in the book about wearing skirts. Honestly, if they would try to wear only skirts for a year, with the right attitude, many of the excuses would not be there anymore.
@emilydawson2667 Both my grandmothers never wore pants and both did gardening. Neither worked but took care of home and family. The painting you refer to is beautiful.
As someone who never wears pants I find this remark very strange. There are a lot of things we wear today that Our Lady didn’t wear. We live in 2024 and we don’t have to look like someone from 2024 years ago, the most important thing is to look modest.

Something else to consider. It has become much hard to find modest skirts or dresses to buy in store and most of us are not skilled to make our own clothing. Most of the skirts and dresses I find are too nice to risk wearing them while gardening or doing housework. So strangely, without trying to look equal to a man, I will wear Carhart men's pants in my size or loose capris that are modest just for practicality.
I used to wear pants exclusively, until I read Deuteronomy 22:5. Our Catholic Church changed from traditional to NO when I was little. So I grew up V2. I was 55 when I read Deuteronomy 22:5 and started coming to CMRI Church Mt St.Michael's. Then my Catholic education started. Threw all the pants etc out. Didn't want to offend God anymore than I already had. Blessed to be in the true Church. Blessed be God. ❤
@TheNostalgicKitchen I would rather imitate Our Lady in everything, virtues included 🙂 That is what is meant. Also, if it meant never offending God, I would dress exactly as Our Lady did over 2000 years ago because I do not want to compromise my soul with today's fashions. However there are fashions that are timeless and modest. As I said in another reply, we are not Religious but we should strive to be. ❤
In the Catholic high school in Omaha , I remember an incident that questioned the idea that skirts are always more modest. One day, the girls were reprimanded because a married man, who had seen us during P.E. class, complained to the principal. When a girl's skirt blew up, despite her wearing shorts underneath, he claimed he was “aroused”by the sight. As a result we were strongly reprimanded and we were no longer allowed to wear skirts for P.E thereafter.
In another instance,I was working as a server at a restaurant,and I was pregnant. One day I was wearing a knee length jean skirt,and I served an older man and his wife. The man made a strange comment to his wife that I overheard,saying that it made sense that I was pregnant because skirts are “easy access”.I was very humiliated and rather confused because I was always taught that skirts are much more modest and earn you more respect. So I am going to disagree that skirts are not always more modest.
For certain types of work; farm, garden, landscaping, yard work, roofing, etc yes wear proper pants ( overalls, slacks, etc.) I recommend pants for something like a visit to a chiropractor. Pants for horseback riding, yes absolutely. Years ago, attending new mass, I would wear slacks, which some would call dress pants. Now I attend TLM only so I wear modest blouses and long skirts or dresses.

I am not at all meaning to come off as disapproving, I just wonder what other chiropractors do differently than any I have gone to, that would cause modesty issues with a skirt?
@madeleineglastonbury6755 I used to go to a woman chiropractor who would bend my legs at the knee and raise my knee up towards my stomach and twist my body. Now I go to a chiropractor who doesn't twist or bend me around like that. Both were nice and did a good job. Maybe it was the different issues of back pain I was dealing with.
@@madeleineglastonbury6755 no worries! That was the first kind of chiropractor I'd ever gone to, that woman doctor, so I always assumed that's how they all were. Now I go to a male chiropractor and he doesn't do all of that, which is more comfortable to me.
Siri wrote it, I think, in 1960 before V2 (1962 - 1965). That is the most updated teaching of the Church. Cardinal Siri was a valid and legal part of the hierarchy at the time.
Thanks for this honest discussion! :D I'm thinking yes. Some outfits or styles can only work with pants, and practicality is of course an argument. Where I live, there are days where I cannot wear certain (modest) skirts because of the crazy wind ^^ No for tights of course, but I agree that culture plays a big role - I probably would not dare wear pants on vacation in some Eastern muslim country where it's just not common place. It's weird because it means that people can find looks modest/ get used to fashion that is considered immodest elsewhere, and that modesty is not 100 % objective. But that's the way it is. 100 years back many of the "catholic skirts" of today would also be considered immodest... I'm also not so sure if skirts are objectively more beautiful. Certainly for some occasions - no one wants wedding pants. And it's probably a universally valid argument that it is more feminine. But then all of this is a matter of taste and style, I think.
Erics opinion on pants is a bit of a joke… most priests say pants are entirely immodest. There are so many alternatives. Even the small things lead to bigger things. LAX dress standards lead to laxer practice.
Being in tradition for a decently long time I know for a fact that trad families where women wear pants lose their faith at a much higher rate...causation isn't correlation, but it is an undeniable fact. My anecdotal estimation is 70% of children where the women wear pants-the children fall away from the faith. And maybe 10% for families where women don't wear pants.

@@JacquesMigne This comment needs highlighted. Laity is comprised of fallen man, and as such, they try to find alternate meanings and words to justify their deeds. Bare minimum (pun intended) Well, in my 8 years a Catholic, I've seen similar. Inconsistency and laxity leads to loss of faith... Or at least contradiction and scandal. Take the Marylike Standards...we all know them by now...but those are the minimum to safeguard ones soul. Drift away from the safeguard, and ones soul is proportionately more at risk. Go beyond the safeguard, and ones soul proportionately will occupy a higher place in heaven. The 'women in pants' issue is the same as the 'should we strive to barely escape hell, or should we strive, out of love of God, to merit a higher place in heaven'. Speed limit 35mph going into a curve, safely navigate with your modest dress at 30mph, wear your pants and go 50mph, leggings and go 70mph. It will only takes one wreck, and may not get another chance to drive.
This is a disappointing conversation and I would say scandalous. Too much wishy washy talk from both parties. - Cultures vary but morality doesn't. There are universal rules for all cultures in regards to modesty. - Catholics have developed a Hegelian style of modesty standards. One example is the Church dress code. Men are expected to cover themselves head to toe. But women are allowed to show half their legs and three quarters of their arms. These were the rules that Pius XI later down. But I seriously doubt Pope St. Plus V would allow for that. - "Women wearing pants has become normal so we can't condemn it." That's pure liberalism. - The ending was the worst part. "Certain traditionalist groups make it a dogma." Modesty is dogma. Catholics don't have much to work with if there is no unity. If anyone has a problem with me enforcing modesty standards in my own place (women wearing skirts or otherwise) then I have no interest in those people visiting me.
It should really be common sense. My wife grew up showing and working with cattle and modest pants were necessary. If I really sat and thought of all reasons pants would be more modest I think we could make a pretty large list. She wears skirts dresses a lot. It’s what makes sense for the occasion. The problem I come across is the judgment from others. It’s not a sin to wear modest pants. It becomes sinful to do harm by being judgmental of others. Most men can’t even act like men on their own. A women wearing a dress doesn’t make him more masculine. I enjoy a culture of women wearing dresses. But some times it gets a little ridiculous. Hence why women revolted against it. Because that’s what extreme rules cause with out justification. You want more feminine women then men need to fight to take back the high ground in society. Most men can’t even come together as groups of friends to get things done with out it turning into high school level drama.
How one dresses should always be modest and dignified. For example, at home a woman may need to wear pants for safety when she may have to do men's work if her husband or another male is not available. Then the clothing choice reflects the task or job at hand. Out in public she should wear what is most dignified, a modest dress or skirt. For men, they may wear a t-shirt and comfortable pants or shorts at home but when out in public must dress according to modesty and dignity - including producing a video podcast and publishing it publicly. Proper attire, buttons buttoned.
Threw out all my pants except one baggy pair for certain work around the house/garden. Skirts every day. Why? Because our priests advise that this is the Catholic way. I notice I am treated very well out in the world. People are polite, door holding,😊 smiling greetings. Inwarch a.lot.of.homesteading gardening YT and.some.of.the gals.are embarassing!! Look at rain country. Heidi.makes her own skirts and.made the switch "because it was just.more modest" I don't think she's Catholic but even Protestants can be modest.
This is ridiculous. Pants, or Trousers, are just clothes. What is the issue ? Leggings are gross, sure. There is nothing wrong with a pair of Pants/Jeans or a lovely Trouser suit or Jumpsuit. We're not in Victorian times where you couldn't show your ankles.

I think there are more important issues facing today's Catholics. Whether a woman is wearing modest pants and a feminine blouse, or a lovely skirt or dress, should not matter as much as focusing on our own spiritual life. There are also many obstacles that women who are seeking to be modestly dressed face that men simply don't have to deal with to as much of a degree. Try finding a modest blouse to go with a skirt. Try finding skirts long enough to cover the knee to the appropriate level, and if you do find it, you are often paying a lot of money which some women or families simply don't have. We also have to consider the background and culture in which women, especially converts, have been raised in and lived most of their adult lives in. A woman who has been comfortably and modestly wearing pants for years, when she converts, should not be shamed for wearing pants. I am one of these women, by the way haha. I fully agree that dresses and skirts are the ideal but we do not live in an ideal world or a Catholic one, unfortunately.

Every detail of our lives, if we compromise, can subtly lead us and others into a lax state. I understand some have never sewn. I never had a lesson either. I watched momma, and one day tried. I am terrible at it but I still wear my sewing. You are right finding modest lovely feminine items is most difficult.
what you wear is the first thing somebody sees about you and judges you for....I think kind of important. Have you heard of thrift stores? Plenty of modest clothing there. My wife has a closet full and I am not wealthy. Also have you considered making your own clothes? Its how people lived for about 6,000 years, and now we have electric sewing machines.

No one here would. I believe this inspiration properly comes from God. It's a great thing to choose as a quiet little personal penance, at the very least, though -- I've got to say. That's how it started for me! Not because anyone strong-armed me. (That would have had the opposite effect! 😅) But I offered it up for Lent one year -- and never went back to trousersafterward. I think understanding the deeper meaning of "Mary like" is a special grace. You have to want that grace to act on it. And to get the benefits of it. (Modesty, though, no matter what you're wearing, is a priority for Catholics who want to be in the state of grace. That goes without saying. )
the equivalent to this would be men wearing shorts -a necktie is laudable but purely fashion; it doesnt deal with either modesty or the prohibition on wearing the other sex clothing.
@@JacquesMigne A necktie forces a man to close his top button thereby making it more modest. Showing some chest is the preroragive of women, only. A tie is the ONLY fashion statement a man has. Why should only women be interesting to look at? And men should not wear jeans. They are normally too tight. It is not only men who suffer from temptation.
Jeans is the best fashion invention, yet. They are easy to put on. You don't have to worry about stockings and fashionable shoes as runners is the companion of jeans. They require no care. You can wear jeans every day. They last for years.
@butterflybeatles I have skirts that are 12-13 years old. I do not use an iron for hardly any of my clothes. I wash and dry my skirts except for a few really nice dresses that I hang to dry. Personally, I always hated jeans as a child/teen, before I was Catholic, because I could never - and i mean NEVER - find a proper fit. They were always falling down, or too short, or too tight in the leg, and too loose in the waist. Maybe I could have saved my money as a teen and bought some really high-end, proper fitting jeans - if they are even any better than the cheap or regular priced ones, and I wouldn't know, and then i would not feel so negative about that part of my pants-wearing life. Perhaps you were or are lucky with a body that isn't so hard to fit jeans in, but I know when I decided to make the switch (and I had like maybe 1 or 2 church skirts when I decided) to go 100% skirt, I was so happy because they were and are sooo much more comfortable. @@VMSNSRVBVILQMS1 I did like the fashion element of wearing dresses. In High School I was always the best-dressed as my mother insisted on it. I was disappointed and sad when the principal announced that "It was going to be a cold winter and girls did not have to wear skirts this winter". I knew that that was the end of an era (1966). Indeed, wearing slacks descends into barbarism as you can see in most schools nowadays.
