Yes - Roundabout [Bass Cover] with Geddy Lee right hand technique

In 2017 Geddy Lee joined forces with legendary prog rock band YES to perform this song at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Chris Squire's absence. Rather than using a pick as Squire did on the original recording, Geddy Lee implemented his unique right hand technique in which he uses the back of his fingernail to execute downstrokes. This video is my demonstration of Geddy's RH technique as seen in this performance ( • Yes Roundabout with Ge... ). Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the video! :)

it's not too bad finger style- most people just like how it sounds with a pick and try to emulate Squier who used one.. A lot of Ric owners use a pick. This guy did a very good job though. he got it to sound like a pick tone without using one. I can play it finger style but not how he did

@@natekalnitzbass9446 OK, I've been at it for 2 weeks, getting a little better. 2 questions...when you strike the strings are you just hitting with your middle finger or are others involved? Also, when I practice I "miss" the E string (usually on the downstroke) 2-3 times out of every 8. Is there a secret to technique so that you don't miss the string? Otherwise, it just comes out as quarter notes! Thanks!
@natekalnitzbass9446
@natekalnitzbass9446 4 года назад
dmiers that’s amazing to hear, congrats man! I just use my middle finger, but I think the key is to keep your hand very loose! Perhaps you may be tightening up a bit which could cause you to miss some of the ghost notes. I might implore you to try loosening your right hand up a bit, I kinda just let my ring finger and pinky dangle! Perhaps that may help you get the extra flappines needed to nail it! Hope that helps a bit :)

You're so damned cool in this video, man. I've been two fingering it (hell of a way to put it) for over a decade. I've realized how different of a tone each finger offers. My middle one, I attack the strings from right in the middle of the tip, or the distal phalanx if I want to get technical. It provides a warmer attack, a bit more round with a bit of thump when I hit hard. My index though, I assume to compensate for the difference in length, I've naturally used the tip more; and often my finger nail would be a part of it which gave it a more pick-like attack. I didn't notice this for years. So, I started being more selective about which fingers I use in certain songs. I also starting considering using the back of my nail so I could use my index finger like a pick. Naive as I can be, I was almost shocked when I found out this wasn't a new technique I was experimenting with. Of course it's flamenco inspired, but I was happy to find out that Geddy uses this technique, since his tone is so amazing. Don't know why I shared all this, but I just started learning it and your video is inspiring me to keep moving forward on it.
@natekalnitzbass9446
@natekalnitzbass9446 3 года назад
Dude thanks so much for the kind words! not naive at all, the nuances of bass playing are really crazy and fascinating man!! Even the slightest change in how you attack or approach a note can COMPLETELY change the way your instrument sounds! It’s always a very good exercise indeed to experiment with different fingerings to see what you like best! Thanks again for the kind words and for checking this video out, glad you liked it!
