Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbi and Chipotle

Why Open Orthodoxy Is Not Orthodox

After making an off color joke about the meaning of "kosher style", a graduate of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah speaks publicly about ordering non-Kosher food from Chipotle and holding hands with a strange woman.
While we should support all those who are struggling spiritually, is this the type of behavior we expect from our Orthodox spiritual leaders?

I watched the video more carefully and have changed my opinion of it (and erased my original comments). The story does have some odd elements to it: a rabbi wandering around drunk at night (perhaps this is a generational thing) how a rabbi ends up not having any friends who keep strictly kosher, and why he couldn't just eat at one of the kosher restaurants in the DC if he was looking for company. You know what? It's bein hamitzarim and I will be dan lekaf zehut that this all somehow makes sense in terms of his personal situation. Given that, the story is OK. He is trying to convey in a humorous way his ultimately successful struggle to keep kosher. Personally, I have never had much yetzer hara to eat treif food (in public high school, dorm at Johns Hopkins, miluim with ultra-hilonim, etc. etc.) but I understand that there are frum people out there who experience it as some kind of great temptation. It's a story told with humor, so don't take the "God wanted me to eat treif" so seriously; that's an ironic reference to a combination of his own self-deception and to how (more seriously) he might say that God did want him to undergo a test. And somehow the woman did end up helping him get through it successfully in a kind of wacky yet spiritual way. I have heard some excellent rabbis give excellent drashot on matters of mussar and shmirat mitzvot, but their inability to admit to having experienced their own moments of weakness always sets up a kind of glass wall between them and their audience.

More standup than rabbi. Kosher doesn't cost more especially if you are a vegetarian.

he comes up as cringy - story took wayyy too long to tell and he did not have to keep reminding the audience that he is a rabbi

I fully sympathise with him and treasure his honesty. If only all rabbis could be so honest.
