What a shame that we allowed our once great nation to get where it is today - I just wonder what all thos Men & Women who fought and died for this country are thinking now - Very Sad.
@spiritoveradversity1

chanctonbury63 As the person who made and posted this video I personally have no need to wonder what people were thinking in 1960s Britain because I was one of the people myself who lived through that period, and in the 1940s - 1960s the period illustrated in this video Britain certainly was not the laughing stock of the western world as you seem to think, and I myself am one of the people who "went out and got on with it" as you put it, by running a very successful business so I am one of the very people who set the example you now recommend following, this video is intended to be primarily of interest to people who actually lived through the years in question and have experienced first hand the deterioration of the social fabric of British society as they knew it that has taken place during the past 40yrs and now being of senior years look back with nostalgia and affection for the country we once had and at the same time lament what they know has been lost.
@spiritoveradversity1
@spiritoveradversity1 9 лет назад
chanctonbury63 I can see from the comments you are posting that you are clearly hoping for an argument, so carry on if that's how you want to spend your time feel free, I'm not going to stop you on my video's because I believe in democracy, but I would like to point one thing out to you, if you are going to challenge someone about their views then you would gain far more respect if you were to at least take the time to check your facts before you comment and not attribute false claims and then castigate people for comments they never made, I do not consider the 1940s to the >1980s< an economic and social success, neither did I ever say or suggest so at any time, the caption to this video clearly states that it portrays aspects of post war British society from the 1940s to the 1960s, also in my previous reply to you I clearly stated that many older people lament the deterioration that has taken place over the past 40yrs, so if you are going to challenge my comments at least have the decency to confine your remarks to things I have actually said, as opposed to things you seem to think I should be saying.

What the racists and general low-life in the UK don't seem to appreciate is that more than two million Indians and Pakistanis fought for us during WW2. So we owe them a debt of gratitude. Not that the uneducated and pig-shit ignorant would be aware of this fact. I left the UK on my retirement and now live in the Mediterranean. And part of my reason for getting way to the sun was NOT because of foreigners. It was because the UK increasing seemed to be becoming a stupid, racist, vulgar country. It really does seem to be a Land Fit For Dickheads now.
@twidilidee8303
@twidilidee8303 6 лет назад
Red herring. The changes in Britain were not made as a means of thanking "Indians and Pakistanis". They were made bc an arrogant self congratulatory elite decided that the British people were not good enough and needed reforming. If you don't like the UK today, thank this elite. And if the existence of "racists" upsets you ask yourself: "who made them racists?".

I am an American, but one thing I personally admire about the British during the Post World War II era is that they came together as a Country and rebuilt:)!!! They did not go out to seek psychological therapy. In my opinion, in both America and Britain at that time Family, Father, and Patriotism were prime. It seemed like Children could be innocent children longer than today. Of course, all of this happened during my Parents time. I was not born yet. Thank you for making such delightful video:)!

Some very moving images for those growing up in those times many of us miss so much. Eight years have passed since this was posted and things have deteriorated further, the high prosperous street image in particular now seems so far gone. We can never have these days back so we must use the good in them to set an example to future generations how the simple honest things can be the best, and remain calm and positive. Perhaps a start is to be courteous in the comments section, and show respect toward others.

Watching this footage brought tears to my eyes! Britain was truly 'great' back then! Yes life was hard just after the war but everybody pulled together & helped one another out. People could be trusted, you could leave your house open & nobody would think of going inside to steal your belongings or wreck your property! Children could play happily in the local park with no fear of being intimidated or molested by seedy individuals unlike today! Their parents knew where they were & could trust them on their own! There was hanging for those whose crimes deserved it like murder! People were generally content. Now look at the state of this country, the EU dictating to us & crime & drug abuse escalating etc! When will it all end! Britain is a finished country now & to redeem ourselves we should leave the EU come Thursday June 23rd 2016!

@lesreed9269

Sorry to burst your bubble but....... We had nothing worth stealing, so that made the notion of nicking your stuff a little redundant. No seedy individuals? One propositioned my sister in 1953, telling her to meet him the following day and he'd give her sweets (which were on ration at the time). She did go to meet him, but my dad was already waiting for him, and knocked 7 bells out of him! Selective memory - coupled with the fact that we had little media coverage then, meant that many things were not commented on... Rose-tinted spectacles are all very well, but many of us remember how things, sadly, really were!

We, {me and my friend} would be given twopence each for the collection plate at Sunday school but it rarely got past the sweet shop opposite the church. We would while away the time in the Pleasure Gardens along the way until church finished and we would run up and down flights of stone steps and play hide and seek among the beautiul shade trees. Daffodils grew all over in there and at the top were gorgeous flower beds. We didn,t have gardens so the flowers seemed very exotic. Down at the bottom was a stream with sticklebacks and water snails. Water and kids were always attractive, especially when there was fish in it. Oh how I miss the innocense of those precious days. I have so many memorie that I could write a book.

This will make some people angry but the problem people and successive generation have never know hard times. up until the end if the second world war Britain and it's population had to work had for everything it got. Yes we had a very structured class system and people new the station in life but if you worked hard you could succeed. There was this general notion that you lived within your means and if you wanted something you saved and worked had. The military also played a part in society and people where taught to be disaplinary in there why of life and to have respect. everyone was in a similar situation and so you community would pull together, we also had many war including the two world wars. the people lived through hard and difficult time and they tended to look out for each other. after WW2 the welfare state arrived people started to get better housing and health care but by the 1960 we started to see a change in people and the way the behaved. people were li in longer the slums where gone health improved less people died and more people got help from the state. life was easier, but with this change came a change in attitude. People now expected a certain standard of living and the respect towards other people was diminishing. the introduction of easy credit from the USA now meant people did not have to save to buy thing they could have items now and pay on the never never. This in turn brought about a lack of care or respect for property and items. People no longer had to save hard for things and a kind of apathy developed where people had less respect towards other people and the goods people stopped caring how they treated thing the more people got the less they looked after what they had people started to become selfish and self-centred with less respect for each other. our population increased quickly there where no major wars where we could send the surplus more aggressive populous to die! war was a good way to control population and rid ourselves of the more aggressive members of society war was way of population control. into 1970 and more people expected the state to provide housing and food and money. The welfare state had produced an unwanted side effect lazy humans they have always been there but most would die because if they did not work they did not eat or have somewhere live. in the 1970 we should have changed the welfare state. Instead we allowed people to use the state as away of not working to be lazy and idyll whole families would live off the state off the hard working tax payers. As people got more thing for nothing so we use a rise in anti social behaviour, a rise in theft people no longer had respect easy come easy go. The genie was out of the bottle! How on earth do we put it back ? This is our problem. if a government starts cutting the welfare bill the are evil or nasty. but this is not true it time people learnt nothing is free. so if you are unemployed your benefit last a max ten months. f you get pregnant go home to your family get the man to pay or look after the child whilst the woman goes to work. no one should not be able to not name the father we need to stop the free hand out. if you have not paid into the state pension because you could not be bothered to work then you should not get the same level of pension as those who worked hard. we should not be diverting money from the most need in society to give the lazy people!e an easy life it's time Britain got tough.

Naturally you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and I would be the first to agree that academic education is indeed a very valuable thing but as desirable as a good education can be it is by no means the only way a person can build a successful and highly productive life, I myself left school at the age of 15 academically qualified in nothing at all but what I was lacking in education I made up for with initiative and plain hard work, I started my working life as a market trader in London's East End and then I went on to later run my own retail business (6 shops eventually} then after 35 years of hard work I became successful enough to enable me to sell the business (and 5 of the freehold properties that I owned ) and retire at the age of just 50 years of age and go on to live a very comfortable life free from needing to work, also on a separate note I actually found your comment quiet ironic really considering you are so concerned with punctuation and a good command of English that you then went on to say education matters "if you want more than the minimum AGE in life" ? ? your comment is not really making a lot of sense is it.

@spiritoveradversity1
@spiritoveradversity1 5 лет назад
I'm afraid you are completely wrong, as the person who made and posted this video I can assure you that unfortunately I am indeed more than old enough to have come from the era depicted, I am actually 63 years old, born in Upton Park East London, however I will agree with you that I to believe education was far better 60 years ago than it is now, ( as I depict in the video) however, I rarely bothered to attend myself, hence my absolutely appalling grammar, still never mind because what I lacked in formal academic education I more than made up for by my hard work and "street wise" knowhow, I started my working life in the street markets of the East End and worked my way up from there, eventually I ended up with 6 shops and I owned the freehold on 5 of them, and if you know anything about the London property market then you will know that equates to a tidy sum of capital, (incidentally I still own two of them that I now rent out) in fact I was so good at it that I eventually made enough money to enable me to retire at the age of 50 and live a very comfortable life on the proceeds of my endeavours , so there you are, academically I supposed you could indeed say I am a bit of a "plank" but I think I have still made a success of my life, and there lies the moral of my words to you here, I concentrate on being a decent person, I help people who deserve to be helped, ( I ignore those who don't ) I abide by the law, and I pay my taxes, I never look up to people just because of their high status and even more importantly I NEVER look down on ANYONE just because of their low status, I judge people by what they are, not by who they are, formal qualifications mean nothing to me, yes I would agree with you that education is an important thing but as important as it is it should by no means ever be used as a "yardstick" by which to judge a person's worth to society and their fellow citizens. ps, sorry my appalling grammar spoilt the video for you, no hard feelings on my part, best of luck to you.

This saddens me so much. I can imagine my mom in this video. I was not born until 71 but even then it was pretty good and much of which this video has described. Not just Britain the whole world is in such a sorry mess. I wish we could turn back the hands of time. Zionism is the threat in any country!

Yes, post war Britain was so wonderful that we had to move to Canada, with hundreds of others. Strange, now that Britain is so awful, that we don't see people leaving so much.

This is just a few photographs cobbled together. It's nothing to do with yesterday's Britain at all.

What most people don't realise is Britain was effectively a Socialist state back then, and if you wish to see a return to full employment and new affordable homes being built, and a brighter future for our children.....then you're gonna need to vote for a Socialist future.

the country was far more corrupt then than now they did not get caught in those days. britain is a much better place today mainly thanks to the E.U. and the two tonys benn and blair the greatest prime minister we never had and the one we did. they rescued it after devastation caused by thatcher.

Total rubbish James Brown! The country is far more corrupt NOW & not back then! Britain was a much better place back in the 1950's when this footage was produced! No EU meddling in our affairs & Labour have done far more damage to this country & Mrs Thatcher was one of the best PM's we had so get your facts right before you comment on here again my fine friend!
