Kannadasan (24 June 1927 - 17 October 1981) was an Indian philosopher, poet, film song lyricist, producer, philanthropist, and is heralded as the greatest modern Tamil poet. Widely known as Kaviarasu (King of Poets), he only studied up to the eighth grade. His published work totaled 109 volumes including 21 novels, 10 volumes of essays on Hinduism, and 5,000 film lyrics, and was a product of his wide reading and keen observation of the world in which he lived.
Poet Kannadasan composed the epic at the request of a Tamilnadu Bishop's congregation. He stayed practically locked up for 15 days in Trichy and composed this epic in the company of many Christian theologians. Later, the scholarly committee met three times in Trichy and studied the epic for eight days, and suggested corrections. The poet had said that Lord Jesus blessed him and completed his work by working for 8 hours every day for 15 days.
The 400-page book has seen six editions so far and has sold over 500 thousand copies. The book was published in 1982, the year after Kannadasan died in Chicago on 16 October - where he had gone to attend a conference of world poets.
Essentially Yesu Kaaviyam is the Gospel presented in Tamil literary genre. Kannadasan sang in many places in the book and the the entire epic has been sung by many people in Tamilnadu over the years.
At the beginning of the book, Kannadasan mentions how he saw the epic when he sang the following (translated into English):
Philosophical wisdom was revived in the Jewish land
and the Truth came to rest on earth.
So many truths came to light when Jesus was born
and since then mankind has been living on the words of Jesus.
Jesus has been God from all eternity
and became Son of God in flesh.
He is the Saviour of the poor and sinners.
His message keeps suffering away.
As long as there is wound in the body one's need for medicine is eternal.
Jesus's return to earth is a certainty.
The coming of the kingdom of God in the world is the philosophy.
Jesus is the Alpha and Omega and the Numbers, and let us believe in Him.
