According a to a documentary I saw ages ago, the idea of ranged=bad/dishonourable goes back as far as ancient Greece. Some city-states thought that way while others didn't. It was a point of rivalry between Athens (who had good archers) and Sparta (who had much better melee tropes).
@sebastiankrant2738
@sebastiankrant2738 3 года назад
@@l0stndamned That is basicly the end point of many of those debates - cowardly is always what benefits the enemy. See the romans condemning a ton of stuff as cowardly and giving it to their auxiliary but - well, still using it just fine there. I personally dont necessarily know if just archers were a thing in athen - since even in general greece military archery was somewhat limit (though existent) with Athen too relying on Phalanxes. But I vaguely remember from school almost a decade ago a similar argument in regards to ships. Since navy (and linked to that, trade) was something Athen definitly outclassed Sparta. But yeah, at the end of the day its cowardly until I do it.

Other than the obvious cultural difference between American and European comics, there just wasn't much of a push to really localize it in the US. Sure, there'd be the odd movie on The Disney Channel sometime in the 80's when it was a premium channel, but you only ever see the comics in indie comic stores in college towns. Maybe a Barnes and Noble where the thin albums are invisible against the thicker, bigger, more noticeable graphic novels with a large American familiar publishing firm's logo is standing out. That's understandable, but the thing that really annoyed me was that the movie Asterix and the Vikings was pretty much made for the movie to hit the American market with big American voice actors involved, only for it to premiere once in a film festival and never even get a DVD release in the country.

I should have been specific by "United States" vs. "North America." I know that Eurocomics have kind of an audience in Canada and Quebec. There was a Canadian English dub of "The New Adventures of Lucky Luke," and I was able to import some of those DVD's through Amazon. I do believe that there were some Asterix videos released here on VHS back in the day, and an unlicensed East/West DVD of Asterix and Cleopatra was available years ago, but it's not something sought out, unfortunately. There's a blink and you'll miss is Asterix reference in a recent Simpsons episode. That's as much mainstream as the characters are going to get in the states.

The best thing I think I ever saw Linkara do this year was genuinely make me have a moment of horrific realization. It happened in the final part of his “Heroes In Crisis” review when he decided that the comic was so bad it deserved to be *flipped off!* When I saw his middle finger pop up, combined with the look of pure malice on his face, I immediately went pale and assumed a shocked face. We’ve seen Linkara get mad at comics before sure, but never in my entire time watching his show have I ever seen him so mad he flipped off a comic! They usually mention that any time Asterix pulls out the potion and Obelix gets jealous of it. It really depends upon the context of the times. The period commonly thought of as "Ancient Greek" spans around 600 years, or about 3 times the age of the United States as of the time of the writing of this comment. Attitudes shift over time, and I bet that more than one ancient author used their work as a political platform about the pros or cons of combat archery. Having fought in the SCA, I can speak to how combat archery is viewed controversially in some circles and in positive terms in others. The ones who dislike it get angry that their skill is rendered moot by someone remotely ploinking them with what is perceived as less skill. Now...imagine that not only was some super-skilled hoplite's skill rendered meaningless, but also that they died because of archery. Their fellow hoplites would despise the archer and, by extension, archery. But, one cannot deny its effectiveness in winning a war even as it renders what you learn to do meaningless. So...yeah, it's a debate that was repeated all through history and in different cultures until effective firearms resulted in the entire debate being rendered moot.

It makes sense for Ares to think ranged combat is cowardly if only because as the god of warfare, he wants his followers to be in the thick of battle, bathing in the blood of foes. @@SomeRandomJackAss They change Jimmy Olsen's race as well and I think several others, it's done partly for that sense of visibility, but also with the understanding that it doesn't really change the characters at their essence. With Jimmy Olsen they did have stuff that I'm not sure was ever in the comics, though it's more backstory like his dad dying in the war and inspiring his interest in photography and such. Manchester Black's whole arc is contained within a single season, iirc, and kind of falls flat relative to the comic or animated version in the depth, though I'll admit they delve pretty deep into him and create a whole sense of tragedy for his motivations and actions. Never gets telekinesis though, just a badass who uses tech and martial arts. Kingpin in Daredevil live action (not the Netflix, the older one with Ben Affleck) was also black and arguably I'm less familiar with it, but I feel like the change wouldn't really alter anything about the character at his core. Martian Manhunter wasn't always black, for instance, that was a later development that has become canon because it works for his character as someone that understands being discriminated against and also that he can change his race whenever he wants, technically, so he chooses to have his identity remain black as a sense of solidarity

Glad Linkara learned that the US really did have bombers with Nuclear bombs on board flying around during the Cold War. Also there was a incident where they ended up losing one of the bombs which was never recovered so their is literally a nuke somewhere in the artic (unless the Russians secretly got ahold of it, though that might actually be a good thing as they'd probably have taken it for study as long as it was safe to do so thus while it would have fallen into enemy hands that would be preferable to a lost nuke just sitting somewhere with the potential to go off).

Nobody should have a problem with the Trump rant. Allen is a government/secret service agent and given the wanton disregard Trump has shown for his staff, and in particular the agents assigned to protect him (the time he dragged agents out into a vehicle to do a wave by his supporters WHILE HE WAS STILL INFECTED WITH COVID) its fully understandable that Allen would absolutely detest him. When you see that 4/5 of your former staff have nothing but bad things to say about you as an employer, you have to recognize that the staff aren’t the problem, the company is. Happy Holidays, happy New Year, and congratulations on cleansing yourself of anger, Linkara. Longtime fan, and we talked a bit during your Last Jedi review. I've noticed you taking the opportunity to talk about the toxic side of fandom and the ugly side of backlash on and off for the past year or so, and have been thinking about it. And I thought of something. Admittedly, I've not seen all of your stuff the last 2 or so years, a lot of it I've skimmed, so you might have covered this already.... ...but what about if in a future review, where it would be appropriate, you talked more about the positive side of the relationship between fan and creator?' You could talk about Gail Simone's years of interacting with the fans, or others such as Defalco, Necieza, and Busiek where spoke with fans often on message boards before Twitter was on a thing. You could talk about the time you yourself got to debate the work of Rob Liefeld with an actual comic book writer on a podcast. You could talk about fans who become creators (you yourself are a content creator). You could talk about the works of Dave Filoni, Jon Favereux, of the The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka Tano and Ashley Eckstein and her Her Universe brand. You could also talk about people like DAN SLOTT. Just a suggestion.

The boob armor thing is kinda complicated. There are more then a few historical examples of armors having stupid features purely for fashion and those being used in actual battle, sometimes with bad results. Like horns on Celtic helmets, those can hurt your neck or even break it if a sword or an axe get stuck on it. That said, one would think the Goddess of wisdom would wear something a little more practical, there are a lot of places you could poke in a sword or spear and kill her which is very bad and I would say "wisdom" includes practical clothing. Being more interested in looking sexy then surviving seems a pretty bad choice, Aphrodite might actually wear something like that since she is known for being very concerned about her looks and maybe not as much about her safety but Athena should really wear something that is practical. Also, I could see Aphrodite more trying to avoid the actual combat and letting the others fight while she looks good in the background but Athena would be in the middle of the action. Now, it isn't really that the armor have female forms that is the problem here but how much skin it shows, the point of armor is to cover weak spots and this armor fails badly there. You don't have to make a comic book armor to look historically correct but it is nice if it at least seems to work. Why bother wearing an armor that doesn't protect you? So I feel Linkara's critique is valid here. We seen armor that shows the female form and still is practical before like Rose's Ravager armor, it covers everything you want to protect, seems practical and still looks good. Athena's armor seems about as useful as a chainmail bikini. Not that it is the only terrible female superhero outfit we seen that is extremely pointless, Linkara could probably spend a few hours talking about that.

Compromise so you don't have to repeat too much stuff on your 15 bad stuff in Civil War list : Do a review of the movie, and explain how the movie fixed the biggest problems, like characters not being out of characters, a most understanding and really morally complexe situation, or Tony Stark recruiting Spider-man instead of Super-villains. I don't know if you have a more specific critic on the comic that the movie don't cover, but that seems like a potential idea.
@CalciumChief
@CalciumChief 3 года назад
It won't work cause the comic's biggest problem is Marvel civilians focusing on chasing super heroes rather than villains. It was a villain who exploded himself on their own and later more villains being "recruited" to hunt down other heroes. And no you can't compare this to any kind of real world, because, at least 616, Marvel has decades of chronicled alien invasions and other super bad guys. They won't go away if you lock up the heroes. Tony also gets Spider-Man on his side in both versions with the huge issue of unmasking in the comics (which I totally believe was there just so Quesada could set up One More Day).
@roguishpaladin
@roguishpaladin 3 года назад
@@CalciumChief I'm skeptical of the idea that Quesada just got Peter to unmask so that One More Day could happen. On its own, it's a really intriguing concept - take a stable hero renowned for having a secret identity and open it up to see how it changes their life. I'm excited to see how the upcoming Spider-Man movie will handle it.
@rikowolfin4984
@rikowolfin4984 3 года назад
One of the best parts about it is that it gives an actual reason to not trust Super-Heros, because Ultron was created by them and almost destroyed the world and Tony being personally responsible would obviously try to do his best to work with people so this sort of thing doesn't happen again, while Captain America has already experienced what its like to have the government hold too much power over people with Hydra being able to infiltrate SHIELD and almost took over the world through the promise of making the world safer. Both sides have really good reasons for why they are against each other with out hating each other until the very end when they are forced to clash seriously, and again it's for completely understandable reasons with Tony wanting revenge for his Parents after seeing how brutally they were murdered and Cap trying to protect his best friend that was one of his last connections to his old life before being frozen. Even the main villain of the movie Zeemo ( Legit the second best Marvel movie Villain aside from Thanos himself and tied with Vulture ) acts reasonably to his own motivations, killing the monsters that would cause several more events that killed his family to other people and only focusing on what needed to be done to get revenge on the Avengers themselves. Civil War the movie takes the comics basic idea and actually makes it work, no dumb political angle or stunts, no stupid pointless drama, and it's between two sides who aren't wrong or do horrible things to enforce their sides intentionally. Even sending the people from Caps side to prison only really results in Ant-man getting put on house arrest in the long run, instead of a stupid pain prison in another dimension.

100% agree with Civil War being bad. Beyond wanting to see everyone fight actual villains the writers intended for the guy who ruined his friend's reputation by cloning him and then said clone killed another one of thier friends, put another friend's family at risk as a political move, unethically brainwashed people, and paraded yet another one of his friends around after his defeat to set the circumstances of his assassination...was in the right.
