Betty Wheaton interviews YF-23 PAV2 Test Pilot Jim Sandberg about the PAV2 first flight (landing gear problem), and Jim conducts a walk-around of the aircraft discussing typical checks he performed prior to a test flight. The YF-23 PAV2 is on display at the Western Museum of Flight. Produced by Jarel & Betty Wheaton for Peninsula Seniors www.pvseniors.org

The F23 was a real beauty. I was heart broken when the decision went to Lockheed. (Always loved Northrop)

Thanks for sharing another great video of a brilliant team of YF-23 team. I'm finishing my own scratchbuilt YF-23 RC and dedicating it to all of the YF-23 team out there! Prototype flew nicely in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Mine's gonna fly in my home town Jakarta, Indonesia.

The most beautiful and stealthy jet ever designed -- and probably the fastest too. As I understand it was never really pushed to it's maximum speed (or if it was the data is still classified.)

Darryl Tran if I remember correctly the yf-23 lost cause it wasn't as maneuverable as the yf-22

Jim Sandberg said they took Pav1 to Mach 1.8 and Pav2 to Mach 1.72, called out all the G limits, AOA, bay door time open, yaw ˚, etc. Its design maximum speed might have been higher, but they said what they maxed at in the test program, which wasn't many flights. What favored the YF-22 was probably what happened in another State, but we won't know for at least 40 years from the time the program was awarded to Lockheed. We just barely learned why the YF-16 won out over the YF-17 in the early 1970s, and it's in the 2nd decade of the 21st Century.

jvburnes Well the stealth is classified so that is total conspiracy. However, the top speed that it was alien during testing is not. The 23 flew Mach 1.6 without afterburners. The 22 flew Mach 1.58 without afterburners. 15 mph. is not exactly a huge difference. And while the stealth of each aircraft is classified i do not see how the 23 was more stealthy with it’s two piece cockpit and exposed engines. Yes a four poster tail is not as stealthy but exposed engines will more than make up for that. Also, when this other commenter here mentioned AoA then they are just speculating. There was no AoA testing done on the 23. There was AoA testing done on a model in a wind tunnel but that is it. Northrop did not test the 23 in a lot of basic areas like AoA and spin testing. They reserved those tests for the Dem-Val phase. They were basically saying give us the contract and then we will show you what it can do. The 22 had several distinct advantages over the 23. Like it’s sensor fusion was the most advanced at the time with it’s digital cockpit and lcd crystal displays and HOTAS. The 23 was completely analogue so how they would share data and information to other platforms I have no clue. The 22 was also more maneuverable especially at high altitudes. The 22 also carried more weapons than the 23. There was a lot more going for the 22 then all of the skeptics give it credit for. The only thing that I see as a huge winner for the 23 was that it had a much farther range than the 22 so that was a big plus for it.

With all great aircraft that have come and gone they have all looked right when in the air and the YF-23 was an incredibly beautiful aircraft that had all the hallmarks to have been an exceptional fighter.

Nah dude, yf-23 was way and IS way superior than the f-22 the f-22 was filled with design errors, like the oxigen not reaching the pilots mask and leaving the pilot unconcious if he tried any sort of acrobatics. yf-23 was the victim of government corruption, just like boeings x-32
@ivanlagrossemoule
@ivanlagrossemoule 5 лет назад
@@elfather3889 What garbage. The F-22 was a much more mature project with a better balance of performance. The issues with the oxygen are typical survivor bias, meaning that you never got to see the shitloads of problems the F-23 would've had. It's not to do with the aircraft design either, depending on the contractor the F-23 might even have had the exact same issue. Concerning the X-32, it was absolue shit compared to the X-35.

@@elfather3889 The x-32 was riddled with issues, and it never was able to perform it's hover demonstration because it was behind schedule. Also the wing was a single piece of fiberglass which was incredibly expensive to manufacture. I'm not defending the F35, as I think it's also not a great plane. The JSF program was ahead of it's time and way to demanding for the technological limits of the late 90's and early 2000's. That was the main problem. To high of requirements and not enough time to build what the government wanted.

Pratt Whitney most reliable. The GE engine was said to have better top speed but GE had issues when testing Pratt Whitney ran smoothly so that's what in the raptor..

Contrary to what was said at 7:00, it sure seems that we can see the engine face: data3.primeportal.net/hangar/howard_mason4/yf-23/images/yf-23_23_of_51.jpg public.sn2.livefilestore.com/y1pvuhd1McD1rF7nLgomMagpFelpkY59Mi7YoAVio1lGvc5QpHIvW0WTJB41atzM8kUS_lOJxOjXYm2HUenhWo2Bg/YF-23%203.jpg?psid=1 Perhaps he meant that the engine face couldn't be seen from straight in front of the airplane, which is true. However, it evidently can be seen from other angles. The F-23, had it been selected and developed, probably would have needed inline radar blockers to be stealthy. The YF-23 didn't need those because it's just a flight demonstrator. By the way, the intake S-ducts on the F-22 and F-35 do completely conceal the engine face from direct view from all angles.

+rbrtck You can see it but you can't SEE it as in inspect it
@rbrtck
@rbrtck 8 лет назад
+Mazda rx7 The general subject might have been inspection, but Sandberg specifically brought up stealth in regard to the engine face, and in that context if you can see the engine face from some angles, then so can radar. In contrast, you cannot see the engine face of the F-22 or F-35 from any angle--not without crawling into the intake, anyway.
@mazdarx7887
@mazdarx7887 8 лет назад
Radar is on the ground, aircraft are in the air. Do the geometry. Stealth aircraft are not a stealthy as they want you to believe. All the currant stealth technology can do is reduce the size of the reflected image. Changing the wavelength and frequency has enabled the aircraft to be detected. New passive radar and OTR is quickly making currant stealth technology obsolete. DARPA is working on a system that uses various spectrum's of light to detect objects in the air and surface of the sea.
@crsvetteii1753
@crsvetteii1753 8 лет назад
+rbrtck Not sure what you see beyond the safety placard. The actual engine face is offset on the YF-23, i.e. the inlet duct is curved such that, from the front, the actual inlet blades are not visible.
@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 6 лет назад
Interesting. Maybe he was just wrong about the face of the engine being completely hidden. It appears to be just mostly hidden. That's a pretty small opportunity for radar.

@tjp353

It is a shame, but it would be so expensive to keep a unique pair of experimental combat aircraft in an airworthy condition. No one's got that sort of spare cash & even if they did, it would likely be impossible to get them approved for flight, outside of a military flight test program. Lots of expense & red tape.
@chaostheoryfilms

The British (Somewhat) did it with the Vulcan. Considering the amount of fans among various aircraft (SR-71,F-4,F14,This) it's surprising so many air-frames are just let go of.
