They got me into kpop but I still believe Girls generation and Twice left a much bigger trace in Korea and both older and younger gens know about them. When BP blew up internationally it seems that Korea then started paying more attention to them

Before the girls debuted, YG was so confident that Blackpink would succeed that he said they trained like 2NE1, but they were all beautiful, so they were the better version (he was really mean to 2NE1). In addition, YG had Teddy, who had made music for 2NE1, make music for Blackpink. What YG didn't expect was that they were so successful that they apparently had a lot of bargaining power when he tried to renew their contracts. Edit: I didn't mean to compare Blackpink with 2NE1. I just wanted to comment on how YG thought about them. I feel that YG lacks new ideas and it's a shame to just create the same kind of girl group because it's successful.

The music of Blackpink being different from the cute catchy concepts of other groups is what makes it good. It can't always be some cute girly girl with teddy bears and cotton candy and rainbows type of concept, it can get to common and eventually doesn't shine as bright. The hip gop heavy beats in BP is what kpop needed. Their music producers really stepped it up with that because I guarantee that if Blackpink was just another cutesy bubbly group, they'll be half as successful as they are now. So for that it's good to see Blackpink as the leading group, even with 4th Gen groups, Blackpink still stands above because they're still different from these newer groups.
I don't agree with you, Boombaya was in a sense bright and bubbly, a pop side of hihop or something like that. Dudu, let's kill this love, etc. are not pure hihop as well. Ice cream literally has teddy bears and a cutsie imaginary. There are hihop songs , by they are majorly b-sides. Also, BP are not the first with a concept like that , there was 2ne1, before them, others as well. What makes them exceptional is not their music or concepts, it's the girls themselves, they are extremely charismatic and have a magnetic draw to them.

I will always hate YG for how he announced blackpink debut and left 2ne1 in the dark and called bp the prettier version of 2ne1. The reason he didn't expect them to be Popular/sucessful is because he just wanted to replace 2ne1 because he did not think they were pretty enough and wanted a group of girls who were pretty and knew blackpink wasn't as talented as 2ne1 he just liked their looks so no surprise he didn't think they'd be successful. 2ne1 literally found out throughout the media about them disbanding he literally had the biggest 2nd gen girl group under his roof and treated them terribly because of their looks despite their raw talent and being loved internationally and in korea. Even till today 2ne1 holds records that not even bp has touched and I hate how much hate blackpink got at the start of their career because of how YG treated 2ne1 but I'm glad that they're sucessful and we're one one of the fastest girl groups to get a win but the back story is just all around sad. He could've had two very successful girl groups under his company and to top it off he literally gave away a song that was meant for 2ne1 to blackpink having no shame with CL voice still in the background 😭 I hope with baby monster he keeps blackpink and doesn't abandon them like he did 2ne1.
Someone finally said blackpink debut is so sad and so many people don't know the backstory to their debut. I'm so glad we have blackpink but I wish he handled it better he only does it to his girl groups and now I fear with baby monsters he's going to do the exact same bear in mind 2ne1 was in their prime and was still making hits YG didn't care about disbanding them so whose to say with blackpink he won't do the same.
I genuinely can't believe he actually thinks that lol It might not have been the most trendy concept but it's not as if that concept wasn't popular (see 4Minute, 2NE1, even some SNSD songs, etc...), so, really, the concept would not have been a problem at all, and would even push them to the gp (their first songs sounded like Club music, especially Boombayah). Not only that, the members were also both pretty and fashionnable, AND already pretty famous (because of BIGBANG), not counting the fact that they debuted under YG, one of the biggest companies. Ggs were never really successful in accounting for female fans, and thus, their sound, their clothes, their image, their visuals were meant to be for the overwhelming catered to male fans. No gg debuted with the trap, edm that blackpink did, and now groups do the same. FAMOUS because of bigbang, huge overstatement, no knew the faces of the members completely before their press conference. Lisa was a masked, back up dancer in a 3 second clip of taeyangs song, wow, such promotion. Rosé and jisoos names weren't even known, jennie just had a song with gd, which didn't blow up, no knew she was a trainee. All BP content before debut date was a dance practice with the members.

For me at the time of BP debut people (especially on G+) were excited cause YG was going to have to another hip hop Girl Group and seeing the success of 2ne1 many people expect them to be somewhat like 2ne1 but with their own kick. Blackpink songs are the best compared to other female kpop groups. At first i was a bts army but then i started listening to blackpink somgs and i got addicted to bp songs. Blackpink is the only group that i stan after bts. I started listening twice songs 4years ago but i didn't liked song and thought all female groups songs of kpop are cringe but Blackpink changed my mindset. Bp songs are fire 🔥💖💜

Hip hop or girl crush genre was never new bcz 2ne1 were doing it before blackpink. 2ne1 had crazy fanbase that time they were everywhere but the thing was they were talented but not too much visually appealing to people thats was yg's words "they are prettier version of 2ne1" And bp was heavily marketed. There is no group in yg that was marketed that much especially in west.

The thing is, the group has immense potential only if: 1. There should be more comebacks 2. They should be given more chances to write their own lyrics 3. They disband 2NE1 to focus only on bp, have you ever seen a kpop group going on world tour with 10 songs but bp did, they had one of the best and successful debut in kpop (3gen) with boombayah and there are so many other things..... Yg marketing strategy is insane. And the way blackpink was always put next to that one big group so that they would be in highlight even though when blackpink wasn’t that big in western market was another another great move from him. Give kudos to yg. Blackpink 70% success I would say a bit more success credit goes to him.
YG also didn’t think 2ne1 would be successful. Before 2ne1 YG was known for having failed girl groups, so his expectations were low, but 2ne1 changed the path of YG forever.
