The Yi 4k Action Camera has many different settings. I talk about some of the do's and dont's of creating time lapse videos in general, and the advantages and disadvantages of using time lapse video mode as opposed to the time lapse photo mode.

Michael - loved that you 'owned it' on the intervals math (does my head in too;) and also got me to lol at your comic relief 'mental overload' bit! Good tip on auto-settings light to warm caution too. My yi 4k+ is enroute so will also look at your other vid 'Yi 4k Action Cam Image Quality Settings'. Am subbing (also want to see you get past 100 and onwards!). Cheers from Bangkok Thailand

Hello Michael, I just bought a Yi 4K+ action camera mainly for motorcycle videoing. However, I also want to do a time lapse of a sunrise where I live at Maroubra Beach in Sydney Australia. I found your video/tutorial a real help. Now all I have to do is get up before sunrise to give it a shot. Again thanks for taking the time to go over time lapse video and photo on the Yi 4K+. Well done and a big thumbs up.

The other consideration you must think about is in post-production. Do you want to be able to edit individual photos before converting to a video or are you okay with editing the look of the overall video?

How close does the Yi focus? I want to take a time lapse of plant growth over several days. Also, is there a way to plug the camera into external power so that I don't have to rely on the battery for a several-day time lapse?
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 5 лет назад
It doesn't focus super close. There's no macro focus option but it's not very far either. Maybe a foot or so. You would have to search on Amazon for a dummy battery. Not sure if they make one for it.

Hi. My name is Samuel. Just wondering: at 4:26 how do you make your camera move to the left automaticaly doing timelapse at the same time?
@MichaelWTurner

Crop in(Scale up) your shot and use keyframes to move from left to right or vice versa. Do you understand? What software do you use to edit?

Hi, thanks for your video. I am looking for a megalong timelapse for a construction site and you mentioned you can set 60min time lapse between pics, but the official specs do not mention a mode longer than 60seconds, could you confirm 60min between snaps is a real option? THANKS!
@MichaelWTurner

It's up to 60 minutes in timelapse photo mode and up to 60s in timelapse video mode.

Hey, great video, I'm looking at buying one of these to timelapse a mountain bike ride I'm doing (over 21 days). I'm thinking about setting it to shoot one photo per 60 seconds but is there an option for the camera to shutdown between shots? Or does it remain on? I'm guessing it does. We'll be riding for 8-10 hours per day so I need to figure out how to keep it powered. What is battery life like when timelapsing? Thanks
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 6 лет назад
+fullere The screen turns off while it timelapses but the unit stays on. I can't really tell you how long it will last exactly. Ive never used it for that long. Give me a day or two and i can experiment. Are you biking while trying to take pictures though?
@fullere
@fullere 6 лет назад
Michael Turner that would be great, thanks. Yes, I'm biking the length of New Zealand and want to take a photo every 60 or 120 seconds from my handle bar. Over the time it would come out as a 6 to 8 minute video at 30fps. My main issues are battery life and image stabilisation. I would take 2 spare batteries and I also have a USB battery bank for backup (though I need this for my phone too). I'm not sure how good the photos would be taken from the bike, I know the video stabilisation isn't the best but I'm hoping photos at high shutter speed might be ok? Not sure if it's something you've tried. Thanks for your help.
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 6 лет назад
fullere It lasts for close to 6 hours if you are taking at 60 second intervals. Not sure how the pics will look if you are riding a bike...might be blurry. Not sure though.
@fullere
@fullere 6 лет назад
That's great, thanks so much for taking the time to check this, it means that I should comfortably get through a days riding with 2 batteries allowing me to recharge each night. I'll send you a link to the video when I'm done, won't be until the end of March though. Thanks again :)

can these option give mp4 videos from the 1fps (for example)...?
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
You can make a mp4 video using the time lapse video function in the camera and you can shoot 1 frame at .5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 and 60 seconds . I hope that answers your question.

I cannot get my quality to be good while filming indoors. The dark area is too dark but when I put up ISO it gets too grainy.
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 3 года назад
The image sensor is extremely small and this is a pretty old model. There's only so much performance that can be squeezed out of it. If you are indoors you have to light things up

Hi, Is there a way to set the photo time - lapse to 24hrs, i.e. One photo taken ever day? Cheers, Simon

Maximum on mine is 1 hour interval. I havent upgrade the firmware in a while, but doubt they could add that. The cam is on in timelapse mode and the battery would run out

Is there a way to calculate the video time lapse settings? I don't quite understand how to do it since I don't understand how fast does the camera will speed up the video!
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
You have to take a look at the variables - Frames Per Second(FPS) also known as frame rate, Interval(I), Total Record Time(TRT), Total Amount of Frames(TF), Time Lapse Video Length(TLVL). Oh boy, I'm a little scared that I'm going to confuse the hell out of you.Pay attention... Your frame rate is 30(FPS), and let's say you set your interval(I) to 10sec, and your total record time(TRT) will be 60 minutes. Since all other variables are seconds, let's change 60 minutes to 3600 seconds (60min x 60 sec). Now we know by our frame rate that it takes 30 frames to make 1 sec of video (1 sec video = 30FPS). The camera Interval(I) is set to fire 1 frame every 10 seconds. Divide 3600 seconds(TRT) by 10 seconds(I) and you get the total amount of frames(TF) that will be created in 60 minutes which is 360. Take 360(TF) and divide by 30(FPS), and you get 12. So you will have a 12 second video. If anyone can break it down a little easier, please jump in or correct me if I am wrong. Hope that helps you out

Thanks a lot for such a complete answer michael that helped me a lot to make mi calculations for the time lapse. I'm also interested in doing this time lapses but using the "time lapse video" mode, I just finished reading your answer to Merine Agnes, and I have a question tough, you said that if you record 1s intervals, and leave it recording for 1 hour then you have exactly 2 minutes long. Is there a way to calculate this? Let's say that I change the interval to 2s to record for half an hour, will the change in the final video be a linear relationship? Or is there a way to calculate it? I got stuck in there since I don't know how much does the camera speeds up each video clip to create the final video!
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
Yes it is almost like the example I gave you except the interval is 1 instead of 10. I know her fps is 30 because it is the only frame rate with the yi action cam video time lapse.In 1 hour there is still 3600 seconds(TRT). If your interval is 1s, than you will have a total of 3600 frames(TF). Divide by 30(FPS) (because we know that's how many frames are needed to create a second of video) and you get 120 seconds(2 minutes). I'm sorry if it confusing, but I don't know how to explain it any better. Hopefully that helps :)
@UnaformadeVER
@UnaformadeVER 7 лет назад
Your explanation is great! I now think that my problem is that I misunderstood the options, the way I understood it, is that the "video lenght" option, is the duration of a clip, that gets recorded at some "interval" (.5s, 1s, 2s etc). So let's say I set "Video lenght: 6s" and "interval: 1s" I thought that it records 6 seconds of video, with a pause of 1 second inbetween clips, and then the camera joins all those clips to create a final video. But reading again your answer to Merine and how you do the math, I think I misunderstood those settings right? what do the settings mean then? lol
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
You're right about the video length. If you set the video length to 6s, then no matter what the rest of the settings are, the video will be 6s. Interval means "1 frame of video every 1 second" in the example you just provided. If you set interval to 2s, it would be 1 frame every 2 seconds. Do you understand what a video frame means?
@MerineAgnes
@MerineAgnes 7 лет назад
Hello! could you please tell me how to change the duration of the time lapse video? I'm just playing around with time lapse videos on the yi 4k, but I just can't find how i can increase the duration of the video, and it seems to finish within a couple seconds. Thank you.
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
Which do you use, time lapse photo or time lapse video? And how long do you typically leave the camera recording?
@MerineAgnes
@MerineAgnes 7 лет назад
Michael Turner For time lapse video. If I leave it to record for an hour with the interval of 1-2 seconds, and the video lasts only about 5-6 seconds and I can hardly appreciate anything in the video as it's too quick.
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
If you have you interval set to 1, you should have a 2 minute long video. Look at the response that I just left for "Una forma de Ver" to understand the math. My guess is that you may not have the "Video Length" set to Off. Go to the settings in TimeLapse Video and verify this.
@MerineAgnes
@MerineAgnes 7 лет назад
Michael Turner the video length is turned to off, what I'd like to know is how I can change the speed of the video, the number of fps in the video, so that the video is longer enough for me to appreciate the changes in the time lapse.
@MichaelWTurner
@MichaelWTurner 7 лет назад
Merine Agnes I want to make sure I'm understanding you. Originally you said the video lasts 5-6 seconds. I take that to mean that your video's total length when done recording for 1 hour is 5-6 seconds. Is that true or untrue?
