In this episode of the Growing the Future Podcast Dan chats with the Founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture and host of Regenerative Agriculture Podcast Mr. John Kempf.
Today John is known as a top expert in the field of biological and regenerative farming who is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition.
John has an incredible story of starting at a young age working on his family farm using horses instead of tractors and taking a problem on the farm and turning it into a big opportunity for himself creating Advancing Eco Agriculture.
You won’t want to miss this episode as Dan and John get into the nitty gritty of regenerative ag and John’s future plans for the space. This episode features John’s eloquent speech and stories which are incredible to hear first hand.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
* How John started his farming systems
* How the world has gotten off track with soil knowledge
* Where and when producers lost the holistic view of farming
* John’s biggest influences and mentors
* How John has put his learnings from elders into action
* How Advancing Eco Ag was founded
* All about Advancing Eco Ag
* The primary reasons that producers come to John for help
* What are we actually consuming in our foods
* Micro plastics vs human consumption
* Are producers learning enough about biomes and the parallels of soil
* How Amish practices have played into John’s business, approaches to farming and food
* The cursed soil and three beliefs
* The outcomes of working with John and his clients journey
* The culture John created in Advancing Eco Ag
* John’s advice for those starting out

13:40 It is surprising that Kempf makes the claim that adding a specific combination of sulfur, molybdenum, and boron will make canola plants "no longer a viable food source" for flea beetles due to enhancing immune system processes (not sure which systems being referred to). As someone very familiar with plant and insect physiology at the collegiate level, it's important to note that herbivorous insects and even beneficial microbes like mycorrhizae routinely suppress or otherwise manipulate plant immune function at the genetic/molecular level so a measure like this isn't effective alone. I often give presentations about this and the research is easily accessible* so I'm curious why Kempf doesn't account for this capability. I would be really interested in talking about this subject since I feel it is often overlooked. *Example research/reviews: -Mechanisms and ecological consequences of plant defence induction and suppression in herbivore communities, 2015, Annals of Botany -Why Do Herbivorous Mites Suppress Plant Defenses?, 2018, Frontiers in Plant Science -How aphids find their host plants, and how they don't, 2014, Annals of Applied Biology -Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis: Plant Friend or Foe in the Fight Against Viruses?, 2019, Frontiers in Plant Science

context is what you may be missing here cos surely John Kempf and all the people in AEA push for full microbial performance. what he means to remedy with this concoction is nutrient imbalance which must immediately be addressed and you cannot quite wait for microbial performance to save your crop. and then microbial performance gets better with the plant performing better. tis actually fun to experiment - put excessive nitrate on and see how aphids infest the plants and then try to rescue these with a concoction hahaha. find the Bionutrient Food Association videos that features these nutrient combinations ...blessings

@@paulbraga4460 Most herbivores have microbiota that suppress or neutralize the effects of pathogens or defense compounds from them or the plant, so those factors won't make plants totally unsuitable.

that was a mistake - to get aphids, apply ammonium excessively...blessings

@@paulbraga4460 Aphids will feed on plants with low/normal/optimum ammonium levels because much of their nutritional needs are provided by their gut microbes that use plant sugars they eat.
