Yikes. Kids media sure does HATE fat people. 

One of the many great things about Steven Universe is main character is fat (by cartoon standarts) and it's never played for laughs (that i can remember), so is his mom and she is portrayed as realy beautyful.

Hagrid's not even really fat, but a half giant. I think the only real example of a prominent character throughout multiple books where being fat isn't written as a character flaw is Molly Weasley.

In my last two years of high school, when my depression and self esteem issues were at there worst (and my parents, particularly my mother, who is very fit and has never been overweight in the slightest) I took up distance running for a number of reasons. It physically hurt, (not a good reason, but it was for me bc of my issues) it got me out of the house, and I hoped that it would help me lose weight. It didn't. You know what did happen? When I went to the doctors for a check-up, I was complimented on my excellent blood pressure, and strong heart and lungs. At school, during any physical class, I was never the fastest, but I had more stamina than anybody. I started running with my dad, which helped us grow a little closer. I ran in races, three different half marathons over the years (13.1 miles), and I did pretty darn good. I never lost a pound of weight, but I became a lot healthier. Never stopped my mom from poking fun at me, but it did help me stop caring about what she said.

I kind of like how the fat Thor has been taken by the fandom and turned on its head for a body positive method. No matter how much you struggle with PTSD, no matter what your weight, you are still worthy.

The she-ra reboot does a great job with body diversity.

"Fat Thor" hit me like a goddamn bullet. I hadn't really paid attention to the media leadup to endgame, and I wasn't even expecting to see it in the theater. A good friend had to basically drag me out of my house to go see the movie with him because, well, after a traumatic event years ago my life is in shambles, I've completely isolated myself and gained a *lot* of weight. When I saw Thor going through basically the same thing I teared up seeing a depiction in a dumb superhero movie that really, surprisingly, hit me deep. And then every damn one started laughing, and the jokes, and oh man it was all I could do to hold it together. Thanks for making this video, it's helped me work through some of that shame.

I always thought it was really nice how Greg and Rose are both really admirable people with a lot of emotional depth who are still not just allowed to be fat but also seen as attractive to other characters.

Not a kids media example, but the fat shaming in Brooklyn 99 is really disappointing to me given how much representation there is for other types of marginalization

What makes me happy is that in middle school the videos they showed about puberty were a lot more open-minded. A girl who was starting puberty in the video was thinking that she was "becoming fat and unattractive" and the actress who played her mother actually taught her self acceptance and that as young women mature their bodies develop different shapes. I didn't think much of it as a kid but now that I'm older, fit (I do dance), and still am a large size in clothing that advice is so useful to me now. I used to be a very thin child but as I developed I got a thicker frame. Im so glad that a video as old as that in the early 2000s actually taught self acceptance in one's body and that not every girl develops a thin body. Just thought I'd throw out a lil hope there in the world :)

Yes! All this is so true. Love that you brought in the research regarding how fat shaming actually does the opposite. There was also a meta analysis I read years ago that compared the language used when discussing binge eating vs. restricted eating (anorexia). It was troubling how binge eating was demonized, something that people did in the shadows, something that people did when they lost all sense of control. Then the restricted eating was written as being in control and in power. It was eye opening and truly troubling to me. I wish I kept that article.

i am a fat person, and uh. sadly i fit a lot of the stereotypes through no fault of my own. i have trouble with hygiene, but that's because of autism, adhd, and a schizophrenia spectrum disorder that affects my motivation to even DO things. i don't dress well but that's because anything other than a sweatshirt and sweatpants is uncomfortable on me for Texture Reasons. i overeat but that's because of [trigger warning] sexual abuse memories and a lack of impulse control that's almost impossible to control even WITH adhd medication (as i most likely have bpd as well). i also look like one of those fat opera singers with broad backs and broad chests and big stomachs in real life, only painfully short. anyway, with that out of the way, what i wanted to bring up is this: how fat stereotypes intersect with ableism. not to be weird, but it always seems that the "bad fatty" stereotype always overlaps with some sort of symptom of mental illness.

I love smoky quartz from SU because of this. A fusion of two chubby characters who is not only fatter And non-binary, but who is portrayed as a competent yo-yo artist, flexible, funny but never the joke, and struggled with insecurity in other ways but never because of their body.

One of the [many] reasons I ADORE Steven Universe is that many of its MAIN characters are overweight, even the protagonist himself, and it's NEVER, NOT ONCE, portrayed as a bad thing. Steven, Rose,Gregg, Ameythst!!! They're ALL fleshed-out, deep, and amazing characters! Additionally, having fat characters gives artists SO much more visual diversity and ARTISTIC CREATIVITY (character design!!!)! (I don't mind villains being fat, like the Witch of The Waste's fatness definitely had symbolism behind it, so I don't think every fat bad guy immediately equals Nothing But Fat Shaming, if that makes sense...MAIN CHARACTERS CAN TOTALLY BE FAT, TOO!)

With Wall-E, it's not just a matter of wealth and obesity. There's also the commercialism of Buy n Large, a big company more invested in making money than good health, as well as the fact that these people were originally on the ship as if on vacation. Add a couple of centuries and the culture may have changed enough that wealthy no longer equals skinny. Also, I never though of Mrs Trunchbull as fat, just large boned and strong.

Thank you for this! I was just feeling really bad about another RU-vid creator shamelessly mocking fat people and passing sweeping judgments. As a person whose health struggles have literally made it impossible to not be overweight, it was hard to hear this guy talk about how people are only fat because of their own laziness, and if they would just choose to work at it, they would lose weight and look good. It's not that simple for a lot of people.

i hated how they treated Thor in endgame. when I watched it in the theaters I had a moment were I was really excited to see 'fat Thor' and then everyone in the theater laughed and my heart broke. I just didn't get it, it was so obvious that he was hurting, and it was some big joke? Felt like the Russo's were trying to maintain the happy go lucky air that Taika achieved in Thor: Ragnarok, without really understanding what Taika actually managed to do with that film. Taika embraces a Thor's quirks and then builds a word in which he can truly be who he is, while still allowing the audience to laugh along with him. The Russo's see Thor's quirks (re: fattness) and then only as a punchline. Russos did the same thing with Thor's missing eye in Infinity War. It was just a real shame, because if it had been done right it could have been such an interesting perspective from this character. Also, idc what anyone says Fat Thor can get it, putting a belly on him with those thick arms and thighs, and his plaited beard in the end fight scene, hoo boy, it did things to me.

On fatness=/=unhealthiness, even athletes aren't immune to fatphobic criticism. I'm reminded of the "strongest men in the world read mean tweets" video: Tweet: if you're the strongest in the world, why don't you have abs? Powerlifter, chuckling: Abs is not a sign of power. It's a sign you don't eat enough!

when I was about 12 and 13, I was gaining some weight and I would literally cry in the changing rooms when I would go clothes shopping because I hated myself and how I looked. It was awful, and it was because I had the idea that not being super skinny was bad and ugly. I really could have used this video, it was so great and respectful :)

in my school, everybody loved matilda and harry potter, but as a chubby kid, I always felt triggered by the way they portrayed fat ppl in those books, still know that I lose weight and grow up I get uncomfortable by this types of things

The Thor fatshaming rubbed me absolutely the wrong way because basically EVERYONE makes a joke about it, instead of accepting it as his reply to his trauma. I hated it. And yes I really really hope Taika fixes it because the Russos really did Thor dirty

I'm glad that you brought up the negative side of plus sized Thor especially since, every time I went to see that movie in theaters, and even when Thor was far off in the background and during an extremely dramatic moment in the climax, there was multiple people (young teens and 20-something men of all shape and sizes, mostly) sitting around me laughing their heads off as if The Joker had invaded the theater, gassed the fools, and starting reading the phone book affront of them. Yes, I live in LA, a city that shames everyone for anything, weight and otherwise, but still, it was pretty disturbing social behavior to witness in person, not even bringing up the equally disturbing classicism you thankfully also mentioned above. More videos need to discuss classicism. Although it would be cool to see positive characters of a large size listed in a follow-up video, as you rightly noted that the exceptions are few and far between to the point of non-existent. This doesn't even count times where husky characters who were somewhat decent but flawed blokes in their source material (The Master of Lake-town in the original Hobbit book) are transformed into purely negative antagonists in a later adaptation (The Master of Lake-town from the Hobbit film trilogy). Seriously, what a miserable waste of a good Stephen Fry! Thank you for this video and keep up the good work!

fat shaming is prevalent across all media (hell there was even a fat joke in Kamen Rider W a japanese tokusatsu show im currently watching, japan esp tends to have a problem with fatphobia, idk if other asian countries do this), its especially cruel when it's in kids things because it teaches "it's ok to mock fat people, fat people are undesirable and worthy of ridicule, all fat people are dumb and or mean" to kids. Fat jokes are lazy, the joke "hahaha this person is fat" is so played out and it also does a lot of harm to irl fat people. It seems like these stereotypes have been around forever and it makes me so sad. My current BF is 6'4 and about 350 lbs and he is the most intelligent, kindest, most caring person i've ever known (and also he's HELLA strong, he's been helping people move a lot recently) and often feels like he's unattractive and it breaks my heart because he's adorable to me.

You forgot about Molly Weasley who is described as plump and is hardly evil or dopey.

I can think of another harmful trope fat characters fall into: The supportive yet feeble mom character. It tells fat people that if they want to be good and useful they should have children, play an auxiliary role in their lives, and hope they take care of her while they go off and be the important protagonist. It tells fat people to be secondary to their thin counterparts. It tells fat people they're incapable of supporting themselves. I don't consume a ton of media, so I can't think of an example off the top of my head, but I know I've seen it. Actually I can sort of think of an example. In Wreck-It Ralph the whole premise of the Fix-It Felix arcade game is that the svelt thin fixer has to save a bunch of short, fat civilians from the overweight monster destroying their luxury penthouse. Then they throw a party for Felix for saving all of them.

Now that I think back to when I first watched Endgame for the first time, I remember I wasn't as amused as my friends were when it showed Thor being fat because he is one of my favourite Avengers. Sure, I laughed because it was unexpected, but then I thought like: "Damn that's how Thor is coping? Life's been really rough for him". And then the movie proceeds to make fun out of his depression and inability to cope in many scenes he was in. I haven't given it much thought since then but watching this video and reading the other comments makes me glad that I'm not the only one thinking this way. I really relate to Thor because I also have unhealthy/unwholesome ways of coping with my sadness but maybe that's what made me feel kind of heartbroken when I saw how nobody in the theatre seemed to care that he was depressed and were howling with laughter instead. We still have yet to evolve as a society I suppose.

Mikey from Recess is NOT "dopey". He’s a poet, an artist, and one of the kindest and most emotionally intelligent characters in the show. You really messed up by including his picture there. He’s one of the few fat characters in kids animation from the 90s that serves as positive representation.

As someone who has been overweight since a very early age, I've definitly had the fat stigma locked into my mind and has lead to a lot of self esteem issues for myself. Always made me less likely to go out or put myself out there due to fear of social ostracization. I'm trying to lose now and part of that was telling myself that it's okay to be overweight right now.

This is a great breakdown of fat representation in the media and I'm really glad that you included some actual facts about how weight gain actually works. Also, (nitpick)I think Harold from "Hey Arnold!" is more of a subversion, really. He does start out as your typical fat bully, but over the course of the series, he gets fleshed out as a character . There was even a whole episode devoted to Harold's struggle with how others perceived his weight vs how he felt about his weight and if he was happy with it.

Actually seeing Mikey and Harold in here I wanna talk about Recess and Hey Arnold. In Hey Arnold Harold starts out as a bully, but comes around eventually, so I am not sure he fits this to a tee. But more importantly there is actually an episode about his weight that is way better than anything from the 90s concerning that topic has any right to be. It's about how him being shamed makes him self concious so he sets out to lose weight. However he gains a lot of weight instead because he copes with his self loathing by eating and starts isolating himself. Arnold wants to help him lose weight, but he feels hopeless to do so. In the end he realizes that he actually was never unhappy with his body before and that returning to the level of overweight that he had before and was actually happy with is a much more realistic goal than being skinny and he manages to get back to it. Obviously the episode has it's unrealisticallities, but the fat shaming is at all points shown as a shitty thing and the message of "don't work to be skinny, instead work to where you feel good" is so much better than most of what we see. On the side of Recess, yeah Mikey is not exactly the best fat representation, and neither is a character like Gelman. (And I am not too big a fan of how they drew most more sympathetic fat characters with less defined chest and Gelman with full on man boobs.) However the show in general I find does a really good job at representing different body types. I am currently rewatching the whole of it and there is a lot of fat characters in it. Most notably, the one most people tend to forget/never realize is actually fat: TJ. Who is canonically fat (based on his given weight and the fact that he is below average in size he even qualifies as obese), he is drawn significantly fatter than any of the skinny characters, and he not only doesn't fall into any of the usual pitfalls, but he's even the charismatic leader whom nearly everybody, both in the show and in terms of viewers love dearly. He's never shown as unhealthy or slobbish, he is never the butt of fat jokes and he is shown to be entirely comfortable being himself. Honestly I feel he is an often unfairly overlooked piece of really good fat representation in kids media and more people need to stop sleeping on that show.

Thanks for this video. I think for those well-versed in fat shaming, most of this is common sense. But it's nice to have it explained in succinct video format.

Fat shaming works? NO. Are you a coach to help physically, a psychiatrist to help mentally or a friend to support morally? None of them ? Overweight people needs supports not shame. Instead off calling someone "fattie" You could invite them to jog with you share your new healthy recipie. The solution is making a healthy life welcoming and less expansive.

I'm surprised you didn't also being up the ableism in the Wall-E example, with humanity not just being fat but also reliant on technology and unable to move around much, like that's regressive. Of course fatphobia and ableism often intersect too

This is such an eloquent and well rounded video, great job! This is a subject which really needs to be talked about. I still remember how refreshing it was to see steven universe use characters with many diverse body types, including the protagonist himself, who is fat, and that fact is never used to shame him.

I am ashamed to say I laughed when I first saw Thor. I understand now how wrong I was. Thank you, this was very well substantiated and will make sure to share your video next time I see fat shaming.

I've got to say apart from a few comments! This comment section is surprisingly good for a video about fatphobia. Also there is a difference between body positivity and fat liberation.

Also one aspect of the humans in Wall-E is a low gravity environment. Being lazy or eating to much won't reduce your bone growth, low gravity does.

If you want an really good example of an overweight character in children's media, You should check out this cartoon called Harvey Street Kids, there's a girl named Lotta who's shy and kind but also super strong and loves to dance and she's just an overall great character.

I don’t see what people seeing of big people? The first time I see fat characters was totally spies. I always liek clover, seeing her fat doesn’t fades me... Clover looks very attractive with the extra weight. Over weight Women’s always caught my eyes 👀.

You know, Scar from the Lion King is rather skinny. I guess that means kid's films hate those who are skinny? If they make the villain skinny. You see the point I'm making? Just because several villains or throwaway characters are fat, it doesn't mean the creators hate fat people.

Another good example would be Inside Out with Happiness being an energetic active and heroic thin girl while Sadness is fat, sluggish, mopey and less bright I think the fact that this movie is made in collab with psychologists makes it much worse

Personally I don’t really agree with the wall-e example, it represents a pretty dystopian situation (it’s not even the first one to do so like this) and the movie is an overall critic on capitalism and over consumption. They eat because they always tell them to or because they’re bored, and just like people in real life who behave like that they gain weight. Overall agree with the rest of the vid just had to get this chip off my shoulder :)

I completely agree about thor, but I do want to point out that Thor is trying to seem ok, by making light of most things or like it's not bothering him and that can come out as funny. Sometimes this works and sometimes this doesn't. I feel that they did thor a disservice by not really finishing his emotional ark. He is a little better after talking to his mom and at the end going to find himself basically, but it left with the feeling not much was solved.

I gained a large amount of weight in a short time when I was around nine or ten, like from 90 to 120 by 6th grade when I grew again. This was also when I passed the 4 foot 2 mark and settled on 4 foot 10 for awhile. My dad wanted me to lose weight, and my sisters told me to suck it in, and I didn't know why I was still around my same height yet was gaining so much weight. I was a skinny kid and was wondering what was happening. I liked Meghan Trainor alot and tried to stay positive, but I think I ended up shoving it down, because in 7th grade it was a not fun time.

Choji is one of the 3 teens who defeated the special ninja soldiers of a Bag Guy and they literally show his body burning trough his weight in second as a way to give him Superman-strength (which almost kills him+he also gains the weight back pretty much right away). All this on a mission he was intentionally chosen for by the only boy from that year group to advance to higher shinobi rank (a boy who is his best friend, but also a certified genius in the comics). Where is the bumbling sidekick part exactly? He's one example that doesn't fit the bill at all. Gluttony from FMA doesn't fit either, because he's not evil because he's fat, he's fat because he is GLUTTONY personified. Just like Lust isn't sexist because she's a hot woman in gown fighting with her fingernails. Neither does the guy from Cloudy..., because again: it's a plot-point of him gorging himself on food. Video is really good, just too broad with examples like above.

I LOVED Invader Zim as a child, and now that the movie is coming out 18 years after cancellation, I'm PSYCHED. But I am completely resentful of how. The first issue of the comic was drawn and Written by Jhonen Vasquez, a skinny man who really clearly has issues with fat people, and features one of the main characters getting fat and gross and smelly because he can't possibly look away from his spy cams on the alien invader for three seconds. They're keeping this in the movie. It's gross for no reason, and I hate it.

I’d like to take this opportunity to get those who watched this video to assist me, as someone who wants to write a children’s cartoon, how to represent those with larger weight respectfully so that I can avoid the pitfalls shown in the shows that Rosie used as examples of fat-shaming. I have an important character, a love interest actually, who is larger than those around her. But she is actually the genius of the group, and suffers from fat shaming at the hands of a bully in the show’s narrative. I’m thinking of exploring the main character being conflicted about his feelings for her due in part to her weight. How do any of you reading this, think I can best explore that without coming off as disrespectful to this character with a weight problem?

God I wish adults would use those more developed brains to counter act fatphobia like please, pleeeaasee. Then again adults are also racist, abusers and so on. I think a fair argument is made that adults are often stuck as teens and never continue to use empathy. And by which I mean older than millennials. Since I deal with those groups a lot but the fact adults write this, in adult and children's media shows the empathy problem is real for adults they also are more likely to never question what they see in media, the older adults I see are mindless consumers and so they internalize this crap. The more I type the more I hope there are more critical adults out there than not but (sigh)

Mario is probably one of the most positive kids characters who is recognized as chubby. The only time that a major part of his character is that he really, really likes to eat from what I remember is in the American 80s cartoon.

I agree a lot besides the part on the "if you're classified as obese, you can still be healthy, if your bloodwork is fine you're healthy." If you wanna associate that with obese fit then sure, but when we speak about obesity on people who aren't actual built in a lot of muscle. In the long term it can cause health concerns. If you're curious, you can watch Kiana Docherty's video about Tess Holiday and the FA movement (Politics, Lies and Health). For the record, if you're overweight you're fine but if you're hitting that obese category when it's mostly body fat I would recommend to slowly make changes to your lifestyle and learn a bit about what your body needs in regards to nutrition, any small change makes the difference that is if you have the privilege to do so. To be thin, is to have some sort of privilege; whether that be education, money or time etc etc. can we plz just end capitalism and put people's mental health and physical health as top priority? Healthcare and health education I s a right for all! I'm excited to binge watch your videos! Thank you for waffling and my apologies if I have a skewed outlook on this. I just can't simply fully agree with the idea that obesity (non muscle kind) is totally okay. I do understand that some medical professionals do not listen to their patient's concerns and just say LoL bRO losE weiGht, how some people are not hired because of prejudice on their weight- it's terrible. The reason I'm a bit paranoid is that there are some radical talks on weight loss and how it's murder or something coming from people who have been fairly traumatized by their past experiences. Predatory fad diets, shaming, etc etc. I hope the world gets better, slowly. We need public healthcare bad.

I think there's nothing wrong with being bigger... it's just a problem if you are unhealthy overweight/obese (that's just not good to encourage/make positive because there are SERIOUS health issues that come along with that). But it's also not good to bully, because people are those weights for reasons. I could be a number of things: Disorders Mental health Not having the right resources Or their body just simply works that way (doesn't make it healthy, but it's not even a choice)

In the case of totally spies they where catering to audiences that where into that if you catch my drift. Totally spies has a long track record or if there was a subculture of people into it they’d do it often multiple times and element of the show that would have been less creepy if the characters where adults.

With regards to WALL E, what a weird message regarding what people who spend all day sitting down staring at screen, while having ease of access to everything, look like considering the job and hours of animators. (Lots of overtime for months on end.)

Woahhhhhh hold on. Characters like soos and patrick and lots of other cartoon characters need to take another thing into accountm shapes and silhouettes show character. And characters like soos for example are friendly, childlike and caring, and using round shapes is how you show that without words. Same way lots of villains use triangles. Although i do agree with a lot of your points, media in general isnt great with diversity, weight in paticular. Although, gluttony makes SENSE, all he does it eat and hes a caricature of a sin, same goes for lust (the others werent quite so easy to show)

Whoa, Hunk from the Voltron reboot? He wasn't doofy, yeah he cracked jokes and said wacky stuff but he was smart and really competent at math and cooking (skultrite cookies aside) and paladin-ing, and I don't remember his weight ever being used as a joke or him being treated as inferior to the skinny characters. But yeah, in general the fat food-obsessed doofus/villain trope is used way, way too much.
