Ok so, I just found out that FF7 Remake Integrade has a mod that allows you to display both english and japanese text at the same time, not just in dialogues, but also in the menu. While there are no furigana, obviously, the thing is, it has to make it one of, if not THE most accessible game to learn japanese, at least on a technical level.
Apparently Jo Mako has a game script for Yokai Watch 1 here through this link! - www.mediafire.com/folder/h14zm1c73zht7/Jo_Mako_-_Japanese#s7c87y07vsv0t
I actually just bought Yo-kai watch 4 while in japan. Finding it super useful, I'm around JLPT4 level and perfect for it. One thing that i'm finding that is essential in games which sometimes isn't touched upon is the ability to save whenever you want. As it an be taxing playing games in Japanese. I played around 25 hours of Final fantasy 7 and it was fun but tough, sometimes i'd be playing for over and hour and half before I found a save point and my mind was mush afterwards, haaa. So agree Yo-kai watch is great and lets you play at your own pace.
Whoa! Apparently you can actually buy Yokai Watch 1 from the Google Play store which means you can play on mobile!! :O play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.level5.yws1&hl=en
1. I dont think N5 level is enough for this game. Even in this video alone, way too many conversations in this video already had so many N4 and N3 grammatical components and vocab. Having learned N4 would be much, much better but N5 alone.....might be too optimistic... 2. yeah im doing to buy the game now.
@@GameGengo Indeed I played it when I was only N4 and nowhere near N3 when it comes to grammar and still understood 90% of the game, vocab aside, of course.

I often find myself in the situation that furigana are like a cheat. My eyes instantly look at the furigana without even giving the reading of the Kanji by myself a try. I would love games to have the option to turn firigana off and on on the fly.
Phantom hourglass and Spirit Tracks have that option, the furigana appears only if you physically press the word with the stylus, it's super cool. Otherwise, you can supplement this study with a flashcard app like Anki; I'd make a deck with all the new words and have the furigana only on the back, so I'd practice kanji reading. Eventually, when you know enough words, you can move to things without furigana but for starting it's kind of necessary.
Took your recommendation and really enjoying playing this. Great to not be doing only exercises and study. I haven't finished Genki 1 yet but know enough to separate out parts of the sentences. This means I spend at least 75% of my play time searching the dictionary but every day I do feel a tiny improvement.
Great video, makes me think it's time I stop only studying and start playing something. When searching for info I was having trouble with results until I realised it's "Yo-kai" Watch
Thank you so much for this channel. I have been having a hard time because I'm not following a normal route to learn Japanese so I didn't learn words in frequency order. I've independently tried a few games and so far, only one has worked out, so I've been looking for another. I skipped this, because it seemed like a bad idea to play a game I haven't payed in English. However, by *watching you play* I realised I could read almost every sentence you showed! So I should not have skipped this one. I'm going to try it this week! Hopefully it is a good step up between the games I've been playing, so some of the more difficult games (Persona 😩) will be easier.
After watching this video I actually managed to find a used japanese copy (3ds) in my country for super cheap, so I went and bought it! I love Pokemon but never tried Yokai Watch so I'm excited to try it!
I bought a dozen or so games in japanese to learn with along side my text books and this is the first one ive been able to actually play. The book series im doing is really slow so i spend a lot of time looking stuff up on yokai but i feel my knowledge level just sky rocketing
Just got Yo-Kai Watch to learn Japanese with and was pleased to see that I'm at a point in my learning at which I can understand the game relatively well. Sure, I still need to look up quite a few words, but I'm happy that I can use it mainly as a way to get a better feel for the grammar, as I don't have to concentrate as much on the vocab :D Really enjoyable game to learn Japanese with as well, I'm looking forward to continue playing. I'm curious to see how well I'll do with other games after this. ^^ I'd be curious to see some games that got voice acting and logs like AI: The Somnium Files in terms of how much the language is used as well as more games with a similar level to Yo-Kai Watch when it comes to the words used. Really like the breakdown you do there, that's very helpful to gauge the game in terms of how well one would be able to understand it ^^
So crazy you made a video like this! I've been using Yokai Watch as a pretty regular game in my studies. I'm not a very high level at all and I would say out of any of the games I play, this game has a good balance of reading and listening. Then when I get tired I can kind of take a "break" and just play the game not focusing on the japanese so much. I read the manga as well and I was going to make a video similar to this just about the manga. Out of all the manga I have read so far I believe it is one of the best mangas to learn from as well.
Does anyone know if Pokémon Violet and Scarlet are playable in Japanese? Also with this game would I have to buy the Japanese version to play it in the language?
Yes, Violet and Scarlet should be able to play in Japanese. I think all regiom versions can do English, Japanese, and a few other regions. Nintendo is a bit better about posting language information on the Nintendo store.
Yes Pokémon games (from Gen 6 onwards) are one of the few Nintendo console franchises that can be played in any language by selecting the option at the start. No need to purchase a JPN copy, any copy will have all languages.
I’m so glad to hear this. I actually bought this game when I first began my Japanese learning journey and have yet to give it a go. It’s my white whale for being able to play a game in Japanese. At what stage do you think someone should give this a go? Say… beginning n4? Completion of a top 1000 word Anki? Level 20 of wanikani? I know it’s an impossible question to answer 😢
i tried it half a year ago, found it a little overwhelming as i couldnt use ocr playing on my 3ds, will try it again as ive read a few mangas and a vn since then and improved on my grammar
I picked up a copy of Yokai Watch 4, and several other games, while I was vacationing in Japan back in May....I really hope I can visit again sooner rather than later
Love the video! You may have mentioned it but you were discussing the pun for Whisper's name. I like your theories! I am wondering if it also comes from the ghost Whisp in English...
Just yesterday I was thinking about asking you to do a yokai watch video because I bought yokai watch 2 on my japanese 3ds but I don't play that often because my japanese level is not that great!
I would love to, but copyright is a real scary issue and I don't want my channel deleted for some random company going crazy like we see happen a lot with anime youtubers haha but if I ever got the green-light from a company, I would 10000% be up for that.
He is called Game Gengo for a reason 😂 .. although personally I would like some female protagonist games recommended for learning Japanese, since there can be such a clear distinction between what boys and girls say besides 僕 and 私. I don’t want to end up sounding like a guy lol.
If we are talking about new ideas, one thing I really would like to see is a roadmap to help intermediate level Japanese learners reach advanced level. That's because after you know the most common words, the harder words become so sparse in media. It feels like you just cant advance.
@@faith17178 Out of the top of my head: Trails in the Sky, the Atelier games, FFX-2, Tales of Berseria and Fire Emblem Engage. Female leads in big Japanese games seem really rare unfortunately.
@@GameGengo with all their flaws, the gameplay is always "fun". I had a great time playing trough Violet, even Let's Go is way more fun than Yokai Watch 😒
The gameplay of 2 and 3 is much better. 3 in particular is easily one of the best 3DS games ever. The first one is quite simple and gameplay wise just ok.
Hello Gengo-san, can you recommend some game for anroid also? I don't have switch or PC or PS4, but I wish I was able to innerse myself more in Japanese through games.
It looks like the game is not available in English (for Switch) so that should make it easier to get. It's a shame though that you can't switch language on per-game basis on PS5 or Switch unless the devs have it in the game's options or you have a hacked console.
a point against is the legibility of the kanji. I find the same thing in botw, kanji and words I know are artificially hard to read unless I'm already kinda predicting what the word should be. It's a factor that shouldn't be overlooked, and maybe a problem particular to furigana games which squish the kanji despite having plenty of room for them. Triangle Strategy, on the contrary, has pretty legible kanji. There may be some aspect of this which is realted to 3d games having more variable screen resolution, perhaps they can't always count on having many pixels to render the font... but I doubt it.
Hey Matt, your videos are great i watch and like them a lot! I hope you notice this! Im probably at N5 level. I just got pokemon scarlet but im thinking of getting yokai watch instead bec of this video! What would you recommend for better learning?
