I cued my first lesson today to my fellow students and Lawd! I was lost of words, I couldn’t even figure out right and left leg! Other difficulties is to teach without doing, I found myself practicing all I said…😀I was directing myself 😅 and my whole lesson I said we are going to… Thanks a lot
I did my 200 at Kripalu. The one thing they stressed was using only 3 things for cues. Verb > Body Part > Direction. "Lift... Your Right Arm... To The Sky." Simple. That's all you need to know.
I've been having so much trouble with my confidence as I learn to cue and this is so so helpful! I'm almost finished with my YTT 200 and I'm really excited to practice speaking this way!
Thanks for sharing your tips. Communication can be so tricky. My “yoga voice” feels so different than my real voice and when I watch my videos of classes I feel like I’m going so slow, but likely important. I also feel that it’s very important to have a few breaths of silence in between cues to let the students focus. I also really like to bullet point my scripts for class or I get lost. I like knowing I have something to keep me on track.
I love this advice so much! I am 3 months into my 200 hr YTT and these are great tips as I prepare my very first sequence for practice teach! Thank you so much
Nick, I totally agree with your values and your concepts! I use a similar structure when I coach my students to become certified Pilates teachers and run their own businesses. The formula I teach creates transformations over and over again. My clients come to be because they have had enough of overwhelm, not happy working for someone else, not managing to get by and living paycheck to paycheck. I offer them the possibility to gain a new skill in helping others, which not only gives them personal satisfaction but offers them a very healthy and profitable lifestyle. I'm loving what I do and I thank all my teachers for the skills I can pass on to these people! Sending you love and light!!!
Nick, thank you so much! This was incredibly helpful - I have been teaching for a year and really want to take the leap to teach without doing, and this video is really really helping me. Thanks again!!! :) Subscribed
Thank you for all your useful info for new teachers. I'm on RYT200 training now. I haven't enough confidence yet to teach yoga in English but I was very encouraged by your video
This is good stuff. Thanks for posting all these good reminders in one place. My YTT teacher suggested ending each phrase with "...because I said so." when rehearsing. It forces me to use a more direct and imperative voice. And to put a firm end to each sentence. Of course when actually teaching, I never say that part out loud. :) Thanks for sharing.
super insightful as a new yoga teacher. you are so well spoken and your love for this practice radiates!! will definitely be watching more videos. thank you
Thank you. I am a new teacher. Much of what you say resonates with me. I am looking for tips like this to make teaching more mindful and conscious. Cheers!
Wow thank you. This was great advice. Just got my YTT200 and feel more confident already. First time coming across you and real stoked I did. I am moving to Athens in a few months and can’t wait to check out the studio. -Michael
Thank you for touching on the active language piece. I'm getting back into teaching after a 2 year of a break and I've been watching some videos just to get some tips and I'm surprised how many teachers on youtube use passive language and cuing in their examples and don't stress the importance of direct, active language. It wasn't taught to me back in 2013 in my 200 hr and I had to train myself and now I am aware and it really sticks out.
Thank you for these great insights . I have 13 days to put together my practice teaching and haven’t even written my script or recorded yet. Great suggestions. This definitely helps me be more prepared. Listening to this last thing before Dreamtime so it’s in my subconscious! Sat nam and infite blessings 🙏🏻
"We are going to" comes literally unconsciously to my mouth. My meditation teacher said the same as it can be very irritating to students. As a non english speacker is so easy to use it but definitely not good hahahahha Very good video. Very nervous to start teaching yoga but I will record myself and then auto evaluate my class as you said! :)
Awesome! Thanks This is how I learned to teach.. 🥹My yoga instructor’s spoke this way and I adopted the model. Great reminders! I needed this refresher . ❤
So I did my yoga training and am now starting to lead warm ups at the studio I trained at but I am so effing nervous that I find myself rushing how do you get it together before class
The WE could mean the entire group. That doesn't have to include me. We can mean just the group and shows connection and comradery. There's a feeling of 'we are in this together'. One thing that irritates me is when the instructor tells me to breathe in, breathe out....for every.single.breath. They can get me started but to direct every single breath is distracting.
