Taking the train to Surabaya from Yogyakarta is easy if you know how, and in this video I will show you how to print your train ticket and travel by train, in this particular video a train to Surabaya. Want to know the best way to get around the cities to see the nearby sites of Indonesia? If you are visiting Java Indonesia, and Yogyakarta in particular, then you will want to hear my travel tips about how to get around the cities of Indonesia, how to get to all the different things to see outside the cities, what it is like to be a pedestrian in Indonesian cities such as Jakarta and Yogyakarta and what it is like to drive in Indonesia.
After sharing some of my Indonesia travel tips including how to get around Indonesian cities, and musings of my time in Yogyakarta come with me as I take you on the train to Surabaya. If you are travelling by train in Indoensia, don't forget to print your train boarding pass before you board, this is not the same as your train ticket. You can print the boarding pass in advance of travel, or when you arrive at the train station as long as you leave plenty of time.
Surabaya is a port town on the east coast of Java island and the second largest city in Indonesia. The train journey from Yogyakarta was busy but very comfortable, passing through some beautiful scenery of showing Indonesia's countryside.
My accommodation in Surabaya is further out of the centre of Surabaya than I had expected, however the journey was easy using the Grab Taxi app.
My accommodation was booked through AirBnB.
If you don't yet have an account with AirBnB sign up here to get a discount on your first booking: bit.ly/2CNnBxs
If you are only interested in the train journey or in Surabaya then you can skip ahead

Sadly my time on Java Island in Indonesia is coming to an end, there is so much more to see so I will definitely be back to see more of this beautiful island, including more of the Yogyakarta and Surabaya area. For anyone planning a visit to Indonesia I hope you find this vlog useful, you can find a playlist of all my Indoneisa videos from this 2019 trip to Java Island here: >>>> ru-vid.com/group/PLsA-3jllWwPq4toh884kGFmzkR0Vh3l2k

Hi Simon, glad that you're enjoying Indonesia! The reason why Jogja is so congested is because it was never designed as a metropolitan city in the first place and it has poor urban planning. Originally it was a small cultural city which had one of Indonesia's most prestigious universities, but as the years passed, more students came to Jogja, swelling up its population. The tiny roads were never designed to accommodate large amounts of people, so the only time when the traffic is not scary is during the Summer Break when the students go back to their hometowns!

Hi Christopher, thank you for all the info! I'll have to remember that for my next visit to Yogyakarta. When is "summer break"? It would be very interesting to see how different the city is during this time.

@@TravelwithSimon It usually stats from mid-June until mid-August. There is considerably less traffic in Jogja during that period.

HI from London, Simon. Stumbled upon your channel on youtube whilst researching my trip to the balkans. Just wanted to say thanks for the practical advice you usually include which I find beneficial. Please be encouraged to continue to do so and hopefully we can meet up one day our travels. Can you say anything about future trips? All the best.

hf-lu Thank you so much! When and where do you plan to visit the Balkans? I can't wait to visit again, I loved both Romania & Bulgaria, both are beautiful countries, and there are so many more countries in the Balkan Peninsula I would love to visit. Although I spend a lot of my time travelling in Asia I have just arrived back in Eastern Europe travelling around some of the cities famous for their Christmas markets - I can't believe it is so busy! I thought for sure the cold would put visitors off at this time of year but it seems to be the opposite! Anyway look out for the Christmas Markets of Europe video series later this month, and feel free to ask any questions you might have while planning your trip, I'll do my best to help.

@@TravelwithSimon Thanks for the reply and offer to help, Simon. I hope to go to the former Yugoslavia states, Romania, Bulgaria around the Black Sea, Moldova and Ukraine in the spring/summer of next year. It was helpful to watch your earlier vids on these countries and look forward to your up-coming ones. I generally backpack my way through my travels as I'm a budget traveller so I am keen on any tips/info you have regarding accommodation and travel especially. I hope to visit the Indo-China countries too one day including Indonesia and the Philipines. It's about finding the time and finances. Happy trails and keep safe. Look forward to your next upload. All the best, Lou

If you can travel light while backpacking then I think a whole load of new accommodation and transport options open up. I always tend to be over cautious on my transport and accommodation choices due to the fact half my luggage is camera & electrical equipment, I miss the days of travelling with just 1 small backpack soooo much! Hostels are a great place to meet people and get ideas when on the road, but if you do want get a bit more luxury for 1 or 2 days then you can often get better deals on AirBnB- it seems crazy but often it is cheaper to rent an entire apartment on AirBnB than to book a single room in a hotel or guesthouse! Spankin Chicks My plan was definitely to visit Mt Bromo, unfortunately I fell ill at the beginning of this trip to Indonesia, nothing serious but it did mean that I had to rest for a few days before starting my travels on Java island so now I do not think I will have time on this trip 😢😢 . I will be back though, to Lombok and Bali, so I will try to get to Mt Bromo next time. Have you been to Mt Bromo?

Evil Within I guess it just depends what you are used to! The traffic in all of the Indonesian cities I visited was pretty scary for pedestrians compared with what you might encounter in Europe for example. 🥴
