Yokohama Geolander XMT versus Toyo Open Country MT.... What Do We Think Of Them?

We discuss the Tires that are on our TJ’s. Noise is where we start the conversation. Then onto traction however that was a little more difficult to capture in this video. We ultimately went to the looks of the tire. Both are great tires and they have their pros and cons but we try and look through the fog of the MT tire selection and give you an honest opinion.

Excellent driving. It’s so nice to see people using strategy and low speed to to trails.

these are both two different tyres.. maybe you need to do the yokohama Go03 vs Toyo MT. The Go05 is an extreme mud.

I have to agree on the BFG KO 2's they pick up every little rock known to man . I have had them on my TJ for about 6 years now and I'm in the market for something different. I would like a mud tire but I've been told they are a handful on snowy pavement . Since we live in Utah we get quite a bit of snow in the winter . Nice comparison of the two different tires you both run . Until next time take care and be safe.

Ko2’s are probably a better pick for snow than these MTs.

Love the content guys! I’ve got 38.5 boggers. Once they wear out I’ve got to get a radial bc these Jeeps drive rough enough with 8” lift and the size tires. Thinking about 39.5 irok radial but for the look if I go down to a mud terrain I’d say the geolanders are the most aggressive in that category

Good little wheeling video...I've had grand Cherokees,cherokees and now this wrangler alright..2 xjs wj a zj and now this tj all of them has had the factory carpet inside it seems to me that inside the vehicle gets alot hotter inside the jeep than all of my jeeps Ive owned it is because of having a manual transmission in the jeep compared to a automatic or do the tj naturally radiate heat into the cabin of the vehicle

No, they do get warmer than other vehicles. We can attest to that.

@@RubiKidd06 ok yeah mine just seem like heat comes from more of the console area than anywhere else I drove it today with my half door off and the back window rolled up lower legs like you getting a suntan I was in the shade most of the time. I was up in morrow MTN pretty much shaded all the way with all the trees that lay over the rd

@@todhollandsworth4371 when I had a '97 TJ I ran without carpets, drain plugs open, bikini top, tonneau rear and doors off as much as I could. I found that the catalytic converter right under the passenger foot well to be a scorching emitter of heat. I put rubber mats in to block that heat and not absorb water. Definitely the cat causing that heat.

Nice video and great comparison. My takeaway is they are both great tires and it probably comes down to how much noise you can deal with. Also, the word is "versus" when you are talking about two opposing things. Like saying "the Cowboys vs. the Eagles", the "vs." is an abbreviation for "versus" not "verse". But hell, so called professional sportscasters say "verse" in that context.
@RubiKidd06
@RubiKidd06 2 года назад
Just fixed it. Thanks for the correction. Both tires are excellent and the noise is acceptable when you consider how aggressive they are. We’re both looking at going larger and I believe we’re both staying with the same tires. Just larger.

Even though this video is 2 years old Toyo was old technology however it's very clear the impact Toyo had on the LT tire market to this day in fact probably more than an other tire in the last 30 years

First time I used that machine I had it full bore and pulled the lever down and went flying off my feet, counter steered into my wifes car, bounced off and ended up in the road 😳 all in less than 2 seconds. Im a small guy and that thing kicked my ass. You have to do it though if you want nice turf. Ive learned you just use it at like 1/4 throttle unless you have long straight stretches.

Looks like Dad could use some rocker guards to reduce the "oh crap" factor. Are you running Rusty's 3", 4.5" or 5.5" long arm on the Sahara? Also, I run 37x13.5 R17 Toyo MTs on my '13 Power Wagon. I have similar experiences with it. Some chunking from sharp rocks. Nice and quiet for an MT on the road, getting a little louder as they wear. I don't think I would like the sound and feel of the Geo's for how much time is spent on the road. I feel the sidewall/shoulder bite of the Toyos has been real good and has saved my truck from getting swamped on a few occasions, and no complaints on rock traction. I ran BFG KO1s on my TJ years ago and KO2s on my Suburban 2500, and hell yeah they picked up gravel. Then they would let them out like a missile on the undercarriage at 55 mph. Thanks for the great video content. Very informative.

Sahara has 4 1/2” RubiKidd has 3”. I don’t like the look of rocker guards with painted stock flares. But I’ll probably need to do something eventually. I had a pair of Poison Spyders but changed my mind and didn’t install them. We need to enclose the bottom of the body mounts though. I’ve snagged mine a couple times so they need some attention. Loved the KO2’s but watch out Meteor Shower.

@@RubiKidd06 my son's LJ has the Patriot Blue Pearlcoat I believe they call it with color matching flares. I don't mind the black powder coated sliders against the flares. Kind of gave it that 2 tone look. However, I think we will change the flares for some high clearance ones at some time. They may end up black. Do you think you could get away with the 3" lift on the Sahara with high clearance fenders and still fit 35s?

@@RubiKidd06 I watch another tuber JailBreak Overland. Dude overlands with an extreme built 80 series Land cruiser. He drives all over God's creation but has these really extreme mudders. He takes video from in his cab. It's horrid. I don't know how he deals with it. Love the guy. Love his rig, and he's what I would consider a "rocklander", but he's on the road most of the time and it is annoying AF.

For an all around tire.ibgo toyo mt all day.for soggy muddy terrain nitto mud grapplers they sound like an airplane taking off on the road lol but i dont buy them for the road. Was not a fan of the Yokohama. You would think they would clear up and eject mud and not get so packed but they do.

He’s on another set of the Yokohama XMT’s larger now. I’ve switched away from the Toyo’s because of their limited side bite. Was constantly sliding sideways off of obstacles. I’m on Yokohama MT’s now. With that being said I tell most people that they should go with Toyo MT because of their great highway performance.

@wetjandcritters4199 exactly.thats why i have two sets of wheels.37x12.50 on 22s Toyo mt for daily driving and towing. I have mud grapplers 38 x 15.50 on 17 inch hutchinson dual beadlock for my serious offroad adventures. My truck is also heavy. It's a 2008 tahoe. With a built 6 speed auto.supercharged dart block 427 putting down 1000hp to the wheels. So you can imagine why I run two different sets of wheels.

I totally disagree with the road noise comparison. I'll also tell everyone that the Yokohama comparison to Toyo's is unmatched offroad. The Toyo's steer to the right in clay, mud, and snow. Yokohama's will also climb over wet logs were Toyo's can't. Running a limited slip vs lockers is bad comparison as well. Were both work good for separate applications.

Not sure if your comment is in general or directed towards us. We drive our Jeeps everywhere and they never see trailers. We try and give honest feedback as to our experience with items. These tires are a prime example of that experience. Gone are the horrible days of super swampers. We have fantastic radial Mt tires now. We’re not going to tell people that these MTs are perfect though. Appreciate the comment though.
