This is a review of the Yongnuo YN 600EX-RT Flash. This flash is an near identical clone of the Canon 600 RT flash unit that costs four times more.
Here is a link to purchase the updated version II of this flash amzn.to/2pWEpMD
If you use the link I will be paid a small referral fee from Amazon.

I purchased the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II and YN-E3-RT trigger unit. I love the YN600EX-RT II because it is compatible with the TTL on my Canon 5D Mk IV but I also do manual photography. You just can't beat Yongnuo price vs. Canon version. The door where the battery is installed on the flash is much better than the Canon version. I went ahead and purchased another YN600EX-RT II. Hopefully the second order does not come out as a lemon like most of the few negative reviews from Amazon. I also have no problem with wheel selector which I kinda like. You just have to get use to it.

If I'm not mistaken, to activate 2nd curtain via 3rd party triggers, you need to switch radio control off in the camera flash menu...

if you are coming from the Yongnuo 560 series, this is going to have a bit of a learning curve. At least for me it has. The 560 series is much easier to use, then again, it also is a manual only flash. But the small power numbers on the 600 is pretty annoying, as well as the fact that you need to take extra steps to change the power. If mainly using ttl this probably won't matter. But if you are manually controlling the power from the actual flash, its not ideal. Again, I just got this, so I'll see how it goes, but those are some of my first impressions

Great info.great video Thanks And after watching this video i purchased yongnuo yn 600 ex Its an amazing flash unit No regrets. Only thing i found not good in flash is that it wobbles left n right in horizontal plane when locked.but thats also not a big issue .it does not come out of it own One thing i need to ask u when i checked in my flash that af assist beam is not aligned with the center af point of camera. Af assist beam's center focus point is towards right and little upwards. Is that so in ur flash units.??

Their knock-off of the Canon 'Nifty Fifty' leaves a lot to be desired. Can't get a crisp shot off that lens period. Just got their 600 EX RT II along with the YN E3 RT triger. On a shoot yesterday, toward the end of the day, the flash unit would suddenly switch to slave mode even when both units were locked. I'm crossing my fingers that this happens when the flash's batter power starts to wane, as that was the case.

Thanks for the review...i have two Canon EX600s....looking for a 3rd flash for off camera flash. This should be a great option (I hope). I am a little nervous that a B&H sales person told me some don't work out of the box or stop working first 30 days....but they replace them if 30 days or less....i don't know where you'd get service if after the 30 days however.....Thanks... Could you tell me: If I use a simple Yongnuo RF-602/N remote trigger: Can I use HSS in combination with this flash?

You talked about firmware updating, but you did not mention that you can only update this flash if you have a 32 bit computer. Also downloading the firmware update(s) from Yongnuo web site is an ordeal. I thing this is very important for people to know if they are planning to get this flash.

Second curtain flash only works wireless with the YN-E3-RT till 2 sec! A longer exposure wil give you malfunction with the YN600EX-RT Flash. With the Canon600EX-RT I don't have that problem in combination with the YN-E3-RT. I see a lot of reviews but nobody is mentioning this malfunction from the Yongnuo600EX-RT Flash. I have both Flashes, the Yongnuo600 and the Canon600. I prefer the Canon.

the canon does have a second curtain sync bud. i've a mix of both of these and they are very similar, so although i do prefer the canon as a long term product for small reasons, the yongnuo's are Very worthwhile for the price tag. keep up the great work V'

+Tristan Mullany I was wondering how to set up second curtain sync with the YN-E3-RT and a YN600EX-RT, on mine it is locked out on both the camera menu and the YN-E3-RT menu. I have no problem when i have the flash in the hot shoe and i turn off wireless with both yongnuo or canon speedlights. if there is a way of getting SCS to work with the transmitter that would be great.

+David Star On my YN-E3-RT it only works in Manual mode under Menu 2 the second tab from the left should be SYNC press that a couple of times . The 1st one should be normal sync. The second one should be high speed sync. The 3rd press should be rear curtain sync. It does not work in ettl or group funcions.. If you still battling I will do a video and put it up.

thanks, that worked I was trying to do it in group mode with all the groups in manual, it was driving me nuts. I gave up and used an ETTL cable , this will work so much better.

Hi Vincent, thnx for the post! 1 question: u say you have multiple models by YN. I'm going to get either this one or the YN 560 IV. Any thoughts on that choice?

the only special about Canon against the yongnuo is that the Canon xenon looks warmer if you look closely, white balance can be easily altered though.

3 years ago, I bought two of these. My biggest problem with the items is my guilt. They get lots of work. They have been to Europe 3 times. Last weekend, one of the inexplicably quit. So what. 3 years and I paid $67. It is practically disposable.

If I buy the YN600EX-RT and want to use it off camera rather than on camera can the internal wireless unit on the flash work as a receiver? I will be using a YN 622C TTL flash trigger on camera. Ultimately what I am asking is will I be able to use the on camera Yongnuo TTL transmitter without purchasing another trigger for the flash?

I have not figured out how to use a YN 600ex-rt in second curtain sync when it is an off camera slave with the yn-e3-rt as a master "flash" attached to my 7d mkII . I am sure there is some way of doing it I just haven't found it.
@metals2546
@metals2546 8 лет назад
I believe that you can only use second curtain sync in manual mode. Both the transmitter and the off camera flash need to be in manual mode. I have found these flashes unreliable. Battery overheating, battery draining extremely quickly with little use. Just not as reliable as the canon units, but then again, much cheaper, but if you have an important paid assignment (when are they not important?), I would not rely on the Yongnuo. I will use them for personal assignments, but not paid.

Hi! I have 2 questions..please help! I just bought my YN 600ex-rt flash and YN-E3-RT transmitter and I wish to connect them in WIRELESS - MANUAL mode. 1) Is it possible to set the YN 600ex-rt flash into WIRELESS SLAVE UNIT SETTING in MANUAL mode? So that it is controlled wirellessly (NOT optically) via YN-E3-RT transmitter which acts as an master? The manual for YN 600ex-rt flash said it is possible, but when I press the trigger mode button on the YN 600ex-rt flash, in order to switch to the mentioned WIRELESS SLAVE UNIT SETTING in MANUAL mode, it does NOT show that option. It only shows the OPTICAL salve unit setting in MANUAL mode. 2) Did anyone figure out how to set the cutom settings for 'the select dial button' on Yongnuo 600ex-rt flash? I know it is somehow possible to custom set it up in a way that you can TURN the select dial button (the little wheel in the center) and manually change the flash exposure compensation, WITHOUT having first to push the small button above (top row, 3rd from the left, that is the one left from the word CLEAR). This would really speed up my workflow. Thank you!

When I do a lot of flash photography, all flash units will drain the battery and when the battery starts to degrade thats when it starts to overheat and recycle time starts to slow down. To solve this I purchased a battery booster (battery pack) for the flash. Battery packs will give a constant battery energy to the batteries inside the flash thereby keeping the batteries in flash cool and not overworked to the point it starts to overheat which is normal.

One thing that isn't very good, is that the YN600EX-RT does not work as an optical master flash. I have one of these, but as it's the only one I have with RT, I have to use the optical function to fire several flashes simultaneously. The YN600EX-RT works fine as an optical slave unit, but NOT as a master to trigger other flashes optically. In the firmware version 1.8.7 that my flash came with, there seemed to be an optical master option in the camera's menu. But if you selected it, it would immediately switch to OFF. In the latest firmware version 1.9.0 the optical master option is simply not there in the menu. I don't know the Canon 600, but I assume that is does work as an optical master unit.

Abe Navas What version is that? I got the 1.9.0 just a few weeks ago, and there's no optical master option. In fact in the older version 1,8,7 the option was apparently there, but if you tried to use it, it didn't work. And in the 1.9.0 they removed the dead link to the non existing function.
