Now/Then views of Yonkers, New York, based on trolley photos from around 1950. Many of these photos first appeared (2008-2012) on the SoYo Sunset message board, soyosunset.yuku...
Mr Gross, Thank you for putting together these series of videos on Yonkers. I grew up in South East Yonkers in the 60's. We did not have much exposure to the west part of the city. Which is much more significant historically and architecturally.
I moved out of Yonkers in the early to mid 70s. Yonkers was a fun place to grow up in. You had your Irish in the Mclean area, Polish in the School Street area, every area was a different group. The city was beautiful. Most of the homes in the Broadway, Palisades area, were beautiful Victorian homes. The Untermeyer estate home was still there (Location is where St John's hospital is), plus there were about 10 more big estates going north from Odell Ave to the Hastings line. Sadly, so much has changed
I was born in Yonkers & we lived on North Broadway & later Morsemere. Even though we moved to NJ when I was 4, lots of family remained. We were up for every holiday. Loved all those big houses & was always intrigued by Untemeyers wall. Sadly the last time I was up was for my uncle's funeral. Whalen Funeral Home & Christ the King church. Must be 10 years at least.
Very enjoyable. Lived on Warburton Ave near Point Street, had a very hard time sleeping, after the Trolley's left 1953. Guess we got used to there hum as part of our world. I went from East Yonkers to Commerce High School on a Trolley,an it was funny, Driver Mr. Moran was a wonderful person. Cared for each child that rode on his Trolley
Thanks- you did a remarkable job lining up the perspective of the before and after shots! Really brought me back to a time just before I remember, but will share with my Mom who is in her 90's and will love seeing this. Thank You :)
I'm remember growing up on McLean Ave and there being Trolley track that you can see parts of going towards South Broadway and there was a bridge on Carol Ave. Too bad there are no photos of that
Didn’t these trolleys (Third Ave Railways) besides running in Westchester County also run in Manhattan and the Bronx? (once part of Westchester County)
Very nice work! If you like this you should google SoYo Snaps for all of these photos and much more, plus knowledgeable discussions of them. They don't allow links here I don't think, thus the need to google to find it...
Excellent presentation. I'm only sorry that photos of trolleys passing the fine downtown theatres of yesteryear(Loews/Brandts, RKO Proctors, and The Strand) are not included. Otherwise, excellent.
I never made it to the Strand in Getty Square. My mother informed me (and I have since confirmed) that its auditorium was originally a church. I do remember that when I was in junior high school it became the Yonkers Playhouse where live plays were presented but it was not successful. An older friend told me a few years ago that he and his friends made sure to wait outside when they heard the news that Jayne Mansfield was going to make an appearance. I believe the site is now a bank and its parking lot. I have to ask - Did you grow up on New Main Street?
If I understand the question correctly: there are 200,000 people living more or less ordinary lives; there are parents who commute to jobs in Manhattan to support their children; there is a racetrack/casino; there is the occasional murder and three alarm fire; there are political fights over housing development; there is the world's most beautiful reflection of the setting sun in the westward facing windows of the houses on the terraced streets that rise above the Hudson River; there are memories that 50 or 60 years cannot dim.
@@soyosunset thanks for the kind answer. Sorry but i don' t know english and i hope the translation is tight. I was fascinated by the strugging beauty of Yonkers. It would seem suspended between the past and the future. Ciao
America with street car right of ways in many ways looked like many European cities do today. Our cities have changed into third world shitholes and many European cities are on the path of our cities. Yonkers still looks good.
Why are you only showing the disgusting ghetto part of Yonkers ??? there's a whole other side of Yonkers .. YO born and raised Yonkers av. Bronx River Road for life!!!!!
