Perhaps try to reassure him and show him how much u love him and how amazing he is from your eyes. He's hurting you, but I bet he's suffering too. Many men feel in the need to be possessive and controlling because of toxic masculinity, and since he's kind to you when you're alone I'm guessing sexism is related to the problem too.
